American Georgics

In a series of chapters, - often charming - , on the glories, vicissitudes and philosophies of American farming from the pioneers until the present, American Georgics compels the reader to revise the values of person v. machine generated things, not just farming things, but all things. Perhaps because the book is not dogmatic, it invites you to do your own thinking.
How much personal fulfillment and happiness do fabricated objects bring to us as compared with doing things ourselves, whether growing vegetables or making our own dining table? Is work curse or glory? Does personal fulfillment come from within or from without? Don't children create and have fun, rather than "work" when they build the "castles" or prepare "meals"?
I am sure that Richard M. Weaver, my favorite moral philosopher and agrarian, would have also enjoyed reading American Georgics.

A history of Agrarian thought

The editors of AMERICAN GEORGICS, in their introduction to the excerpts and essays to follow, give a thumbnail definition of agrarianism, which I think might be helpful when considering the overall theme of the book. Agrarianism is that "which holds that a healthy proportion of the citizenry should work the land." If we grant the compilers this starting point - regardless of its ambiguity - then the following chapters, beginning in 1782 and continuing to 2008, more or less cohere into a logical, linear expansion on this idea, with the contributors - sometimes directly, sometimes in silhouette - touting the moral values they felt inherent in working the land, and the healthy communities and nations that result if it is worked properly.
If, on the other hand, one were to look at the amorphous blob of a subtitle - Writings on Farming, Culture, and the Land - then one could project almost any theme or lack thereof onto the book prior to investigating the actual content. This was my experience - as an agrarian twice-removed, or as one who dodged cow patties and chicken poop when playing in grandma's yard, I thought it would be interesting to read short, first-hand accounts of different individuals as they struggled with life on the farm and how they resisted the pull from the rest of the world. But AMERICAN GEORGICS is not about the individual so much as it is about the ideals that these agrarians associated with agriculture. And even though the contributors - from agricultural and naturalist superstars such as Hector Crevecoeur to Thoreau to Wendell Berry and Helen Nearing - had enormous experience with farming in America, the selections from their writings found in AMERICAN GEORGICS often leave the farm behind while extolling its virtues, and concentrate on WHY a healthy citizenry should be out working the land.
There are exceptions - the excerpt from All God's Dangers: The Life of Nate Shaw, was exactly the type of individual history I was looking for, and the snippets from Walden and The Good Life: Helen and Scott Nearing's Sixty Years of Self-Sufficient Living also touched on these themes. Aside from these and a few other examples though, the book is much more idealistic throughout. Thus, what I found in AMERICAN GEORGICS, rather than simply writings on Farming, Culture and the Land, was a history of agrarian thought in America, delineated by contemporary writers associated with the different stages of that history. In this respect, the book succeeds quite well, I think - especially if that particular history was one for which the reader was searching. Although I was somewhat disappointed with the main thrust of the book, I can't give it demerits for not conforming to what it never intended to be. The fact that I read this at the same time as The Age of Enterprise and Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do also ended up making for some interesting comparisons. Along with the history of Industry and Finance and the history of Labor, the history of Agriculture and Agrarianism often strikes me as under-appreciated when considering the American experience. I believe these subjects shed considerable light on the individual's circumstances in the present day - but they sure ain't sexy. AMERICAN GEORGICS is no exception - while I appreciate the content now that I'm finished, it was at times a struggle to get through. This will of course depend on one's interest level, but even for those who march in lockstep with current agrarian ideals, this book is not meant as entertainment - it is a study, which I can appreciate in its own right.
As with any other ideologues - whether political or cultural or regarding a lifestyle - the writers included in GEORGICS seem to be looking for converts, for recruits. And, also like many others, they often use the carrot and stick method - the agrarian ideal is healthier for you and for your country, and if we don't do something about the state of agriculture soon, we're all gonna die. Perhaps I'm exaggerating, though there is quite a bit of handwringing going on. Anecdotal evidence, as presented here, points to that nervousness about American agriculture going back to about 1776. Now, I don't for a moment doubt the sincerity of these writers, nor do I doubt there are substantial questions that need to be addressed when it comes to agriculture, but AMERICAN GEORGICS is long on gloomy outlooks and short on solutions. I suppose that is why it's a study, rather than a manifesto. But if there is one over-arching recommendation, it is for people to take a greater interest in the land. Somehow I feel that those who already want to do so have, and those who don't never will. Agrarianism, in almost all its forms, promises a multitude of fine intangibles in exchange for back-breaking labor and cow manure. I believe it, but it's tough to sell it. I salute those who are willing to make that trade.
