Orthodox Christianity developed in the Near East during the Byzantine Empire, in time yielding eleven autocephalous communions of which the Greek, Russian, Romanian, Serbian, and Bulgarian Orthodox churches are the largest today. Each maintained the tradition of icon painting rooted in Byzantium but inflected it in distinctive ways. Transcending time and place through a delicate balance of tradition and innovation, these images of saintly or divine figures were designed to imprint their holy subjects on the human mind. Though largely dismissed as backward by Renaissance and Enlightenment Europeans, icons captured the imagination of early modernist painters, and contemporary audiences appreciate them as aesthetic objects.

Imprinting the divine

I purchased this book to broaden my information of Icons and although it adds to it, it is not a book I would consider essential for those purposes. It's focus is the private collection of John and Dominique de Menil and while they have collected examples of each of the subjects most represented in Iconography, they are not, for me, personally compelling examples. Perhaps this is the result of the sizes of the images reproduced in the book. It was interesting to read of how the de Menils collected and will be a book I might read more thoroughly when I have more time but as my primary interest is In the painting of icons, it is not too helpful.

There are enough descriptions of the whole collection of icons from the Menil museum. It could be interesting for someone who likes and understand icons.
