It’s a Jungle Up There: More Tales from the Treetops, by Margaret D. Lowman, James Burgess, Edward Burgess, Ghillean T. Prance

Drawn to the mysteries of tropical rain forests and fascinated by life in the treetops, Meg Lowman has pursued a life of scientific exploration while raising her two sons, Edward and James Burgess. This book recounts their family adventures in remote parts of the world (Samoa, West Africa, Peru, Panama, India, Biosphere 2, and others), from the perspectives of both kids and parent. Together they explore tropical rain forests, encounter anacondas and piranhas, eat crickets as hors d’oeuvres, discover new species, and nurture a family ethic for conservation.
The chapters of the book focus on field biology questions, the canopy access methods developed to answer the questions, and conservation or education components of each expedition. Lowman enumerates the challenges and joys of juggling parenthood and career, and the children reflect on how their mom’s work has affected their lives. A rollicking, inspiring book, It’s a Jungle Up There is an upbeat portrayal of how a parent’s career can imprint children, and how children in turn can influence the success and trajectory of their parent’s career.

From Publishers Weekly
A single mother who studies the science of eaten leaves (herbivory), Lowman (Life in the Treetops) has traveled to distant tropical locations such as Peru, India and Samoa, often with her two sons in tow, and in this testament to her rarified approach to parenting, urges parents to get out there with their kids and let them get dirty. Her co-authors are her sons, and their essays on Biosphere 2, bromeliads and beetles bolster her claims that immersion in nature can produce young conservationists. She also boasts that her science work and her parenting style inform one another and help promote her goal of expanding forest conservation. She proselytizes throughout the book for environmental education, but it is the stories of spending water-logged nights aloft in the rainforest canopy and gross-out stories of eating hissing cockroaches that persuade most effectively. Readers will find themselves skipping through her repetitive exhortations to get back to the forests in order to get at the book's meat: adventure stories and oddball ecological information. The essays by her sons read like college-admissions essays, and the illustrations are needlessly whimsical, but Lowman's spirited tale of science and single parenting is inspirational.

From Booklist
Following up her very poplar Life in the Treetops (1999), rainforest biologist Lowman chronicles her life as a scientist who is also a single mom (her two sons, Edward and James Burgess, are listed as coauthors). It's a family adventure that spans the globe, from Peru to India to Panama and beyond. While the book addresses some pertinent scientific issues, such as species extinction and the devastation of the rainforests, readers will also enjoy the more personal elements of the story: the difficulties of bringing up two boys in some of the world's most isolated places. Lowman is a nimble writer, several cuts above many of her popular-science contemporaries; and her passion for her profession, and for her children, is both powerful and moving. David Pitt

Review of It's a Jungle Up There
By Timothy Schowalter
Meg Lowman is one of the foremost canopy ecologists of our time. Her work has advanced canopy access and our understanding of the importance of canopies for sustainability of global processes, as well as helping communities around the world to develop local opportunities through conservation and ecotourism. Having worked with Meg on several projects, I have witnessed her passion for canopy science and canopy conservation, as well as her dedication to her family. This book reflects both the substance of her work and the balancing act faced by many professionals who strive to achieve career goals and meet family needs. Meg has done an extraordinary job, especially during a time when she was a single parent, and is to be commended for sharing her experience for the benefit of others. Both sons are now in graduate programs and establishing their own careers in science and technology. Incorporating their perspectives and experiences in this book gives expression to the challenges and joys of exploration and demonstrates Meg's success in instilling a passion for learning in them. I highly recommend this book to those interested in the forest canopies as the high frontier, the excitement of field work and community development in remote locations, and the balance of professional goals and parenthood.

Nietzsche's Task: An Interpretation of Beyond Good and Evil, by Laurence Lampert

When Nietzsche published Beyond Good and Evil in 1886, he told a friend that it was a book that would not be read properly until "around the year 2000." Now Laurence Lampert sets out to fulfill this prophecy by providing a section by section interpretation of this philosophical masterpiece that emphasizes its unity and depth as a comprehensive new teaching on nature and humanity. According to Lampert, Nietzsche begins with a critique of philosophy that is ultimately affirmative, because it shows how philosophy can arrive at a defensible ontological account of the way of all beings. Nietzsche next argues that a new post-Christian religion can arise out of the affirmation of the world disclosed to philosophy. Then, turning to the implications of the new ontology for morality and politics, Nietzsche argues that these can be reconstituted on the fundamental insights of the new philosophy. Nietzsche's comprehensive depiction of this anti-Platonic philosophy ends with a chapter on nobility, in which he contends that what can now be publicly celebrated as noble in our species are its highest achievements of mind and spirit.

Very interesting
By Thomas
Since I was reading Beyond Good and Evil on my own, I ordered both Lampert's commentary and Douglas Burnham's Reading Nietzsche: An Analysis of Beyond Good and Evil They are both very well written. From Lampert I learned the importance of Darwinian theories for Nietzsche (which led me to Richardson's book Nietzsche's New Darwinism ). I found Burnham's notes on Nietzsche's eugenics in the text very helpful (although this is not a very palatable part of Nietzsche's thought), and that this aspect is not really dealt with clearly by Lampert. Both commentaries are great, but if I had to buy just one, maybe I would choose Burnham's.

Nietzsche's Task
By Tom Merrill
Professor Lampert's book about Beyond Good and Evil (BGE) is a great starting point for supplementing Nietzsche's text. It's an affirmative philosophy for those of us that believe we are a part of this world and not pinning our hopes on a 'transcendental' heaven after we endure our time on earth as a 'sinful' creature. Amor Fati!

Bugles and a Tiger: My Life in the Gurkhas (Cassell Military Paperbacks), by John Masters

The first of John Master's evocative memoirs about life in the Gurkhas in India on the cusp of WWII John Masters was a soldier before he became a bestselling novelist. He went to Sandhurst in 1933 at the age of eighteen and was commissioned into the 4th Gurkha Rifles in time to take part in some of the last campaigns on the turbulent north-west frontier of India. John Masters joined a Gurhka regiment on receiving his commission, and his depiction of garrison life and campaigning on the North-West Frontier has never been surpassed. BUGLES AND A TIGER is a matchless evocation of the British Army in India on the eve of the Second World War. Still very much the army depicted by Kipling, it stands on the threshold of a war that will transform the world. This book is the first of three volumes of autobiography that touched a chord in the post-war world.

Doorway
By Richard Aubrey
John Masters writes of his early life and the beginning of his career in the Indian Army, particularly a Gurkha regiment.

In this fast-moving book, he manages to explain the viewpoint of the families whose lives for generations were involved in service in India (by extension in less well-known outposts of empire, as well), explain the British regimental system, the institution of Sandhurst, a good view of pre-war India, a fabulously affectionate description of the Gurkha soldiers, and fighting on the Northwest Frontier. Those familiar with Kipling, or current events, will recognize some of the locations.

None of this strikes the reader as a lecture. If nothing else, this book will inform the reader about several subjects which will make understanding certain aspects of history and military affairs much easier.

Masters was clearly an interesting young man; observant and energetic, self-aware, and clearly competent.

The story ends with a large manuver involving several other units. After a night march over nearly impossible terrain, the battalion is in place, supple, tuned, ready. The year is 1939.

Masters' next book, "Road Past Mandalay" about his experiences fighting in Burma, follows naturally and seamlessly.

Classic coming of age story in British Army
By Richard J. White
Author John Masters turned to fiction after a successful career in the British Empire's old Indian Army. Bugles and a Tiger recounts Master's army years up until World War 2, from military academy days at Sandhurst through service with the famed Gurkhas. The responsibilities of company command mature Masters, until he becomes ready for the greater responsibility thrust upon him in World War 2 . (See The Road Past Mandalay for that story).
Bugles and a Tiger is a warm, thought-provoking, and entertaining look back at a time and place that seem exotic by today's standards. Highly recommended for all, especially those who have an interest in history, India, or a good old-fashioned "ripping yarn".

From Sandhurst to the Gurkhas......
By DN
This is the story of a young officer coming into age in the dying days of the British Raj. John Masters writes with a wit and detachment that endears him to all those interested in "raj" era books. More attractive is his detailed account of life in a Gurkha regiment with a full account of the customs of the Gurkhas, their strengths(considerable as they were) and their weaknesses.
The spit and polish of the old British Indian army are brought out in full measure and so are the martial attributes of the Afghans against whom his regiment was deployed. He is full of praise for their tactical ingenuity and their harsh lifestyle against whom he was pitted so many times.
All in all I rate this book a classic and a must for any student of military history.

The Ceramic Presence in Modern Art: Selections from the Linda Leonard Schlenger Collection and the Yale University Art Gallery, by Sequoia

This lushly illustrated volume is the first comprehensive examination of postwar ceramic sculpture alongside other fine art of the period. The catalogue features more than 80 objects by leading 20th-century ceramicists, including John Mason, Ken Price, Lucie Rie, and Peter Voulkos. Essays consider the art in connection with renowned paintings, sculptures in other media, and works on paper, by artists such as Willem de Kooning, Isamu Noguchi, Mark Rothko, and Ed Ruscha. Juxtaposing ceramics with non-ceramic works, both visually and conceptually, and examining the visual, historical, and theoretical affinities among the objects, the authors demonstrate that the finest ceramics share the formal sophistication of the most celebrated artworks of the postwar period. As ceramics increasingly are recognized as integral to the wider field of contemporary art, this book offers new opportunities for understanding this important medium.

Brilliant accessible narrative about complex topics
By Laura FitzSimmons
I was heading back to the caves in the Dordogne for a second look and someone suggested this book to me. I ordered it, thinking in the back of my mind that it in spite of my best intentions it would likely remain unread in the bookshelf because most books about rock art are either excruciatingly dry or dippy New Age. This book is neither. I read it bit by bit over about a week. The author has such a deep understanding and length of exposure to these treasures that she was able to create a real page turner. Her explanation of the context in which these works of art were created, and of the evoultion of our species, is a very valuable source.
I could not recommend this book more highly and have ordered copies to give friends and family members who may never be able to experience these wonders first hand. This book is the next best thing.

Tough subject, good book
By jrc griffin
This must be a very difficult subject to write a book about because after several tries I haven't found one yet that hasn't been, as another reviewer said, overwhelmingly "dry or New Age". Having said that I think this is the best yet for someone like me who doesn't have an academic background in the field. It is certainly well written and eminently readable for the layman as an overview of the subject, but In the end it is disappointing.

The real question the reader wants answered is "why" and, apparently so far, that answer is simply unknown. But that doesn't stop other authors from profoundly speculating.

Thankfully this book does not focus on that type of guessing game. Ms. Desdemaines-Hugon does a very good job of sticking to what it is and not why it is.

The problem however, it seems to me, based on what is actually known this is a subject for a book of illustrations, not page after page after page of text. If you haven't seen at least a copy the painting a glowing description of the "Mona Lisa", no matter how accurate, is a rather useless and frustrating experience. I found myself simultaneously ( and for the most part unsuccessfully ) searching other sources for some visual confirmation of the authors rapturous opinions.

Bottom line, good but not great.

Like Being There
By WALTER SCHMIDA
I have previously visited several of the caves discussed in the book and found that I now have many new insights. The author gives us a fascinating view of the lives and inspirations of these gifted people. The writing style is entertaining and non-academic, without being sensational or flippant. This book is an indispensable starting point for real appreciation of the origins of our artistic traditions. I will re-read as a preparation for future visits to these sites and recommend the book to anyone who has an interest in these remarkable examples of human creativity .

Nowhere near as in-depth as it could've been, but worth it for the size.
By SR T
I'd like to start by saying that I am a collector of fashion books, so I'm a pretty good authority on critiquing them.
Now, I'd like to say that I appreciate the intentions behind this book. Karl has been working for Chanel for 33 years now (and Fendi for 50). He's definitely been a game changer in terms of both the fashion industry and how designers craft their public image.. He single-handedly breathed new life into a house whose business had devolved into mainly selling perfume and handbags after the founder's death into a multi-billion dollar fashion mega-brand. A book devoted entirely to Karl's contributions has been long overdue.
That being said, where I'm disappointed in the book is that there are so few images of collections and not much said about them. The book is massive in width, being over 600 pages and quite heavy, however it's rather short in height compared to a lot of other coffee table books. If it had been bigger maybe they could have fit more in. It's covering over 150 collections from over 30 years, so of course it would have been difficult to fit a lot in. This is the kind of book that would have been better served in two volumes (one ranging from 1983-1999 and another from 2000-2015) rather than a single book. The entire purpose of the book is to look at all of Karl's collections, which is what I expected. What the book really is is a few pictures from each collection (around 8-10), with each collection getting either two or four pages dedicated to them (mostly the former). The texts that comes along with each collection consists mainly of little anecdotes that are around three short paragraphs.
The book is worth the money based on the sheer size alone for people who either collect fashion books or are obsessed with all things Chanel and Karl, but don't expect to see more than a few looks from each collection. It's not so much a book of the "complete Karl Lagerfeld collections" than it is a brief summary.

Note: Karl's first Chanel collection was the Spring/Summer 1983 Haute Couture show, but there are no pictures of it in the book and the first collection they show is A/W 1983 Couture.

It's not a complete but highlights of each collection since Karl took over.
By bonkers75
I would of never titled this "the Complete Karl ...." because it's not in the sense that each collection featured only showcases less than 30 pieces, some less than ten. There's magazines that featured every single piece of a collection in a three or four pages. They should have just titled it CHANEL: The Karl Lagerfeld Collections (Catwalk). I was seriously expecting to see each piece of all collections for the cost and number of pages in this book.

The master

Karl is the master, so I feel I have a large piece of him with this book. Every collection he's done for Chanel! Historic. I couldn't have asked for more.

Fractal Worlds: Grown, Built, and Imagined, by Prof. Michael Frame, Ms. Amelia Urry

Fractal geometry is a uniquely fascinating area of mathematics, exhibited in a range of shapes that exist in the natural world, from a simple broccoli floret to a majestic mountain range. In this essential primer, mathematician Michael Frame—a close collaborator with Benoit Mandelbrot, the founder of fractal geometry—and poet Amelia Urry explore the amazing world of fractals as they appear in nature, art, medicine, and technology. Frame and Urry offer new insights into such familiar topics as measuring fractal complexity by dimension and the life and work of Mandelbrot. In addition, they delve into less-known areas: fractals with memory, the Mandelbrot set in four dimensions, fractals in literature, and more. An inviting introduction to an enthralling subject, this comprehensive volume is ideal for learning and teaching.

Fractals for Everyone!
By naraxa
Michael Frame, a professor at Yale University and collaborator with Benoit Mandelbrot for over 20 years, has co-authored a brilliant book with Amelia Urry, that will have you happily dancing down the spiral-like path of fractal mathematics. Michael has an amazing gift for taking the complex worlds of fractal transformations and making bite sized candy pieces. Even something as eye-boggling as the Mandelbrot set is broken down into simple easy to follow steps. -- He has a charming habit of using his pet cats as models and commentary. -- A recipient of the DeVane award for outstanding undergraduate teaching, he draws from all areas of human experience to demonstrate the fundamental relations of fractals to nature, human or otherwise. The book includes examples from literature, art, biology, geology, and astronomy-- making it accessible to nearly everyone, budding mathematician or not. And if you are a budding mathematician, it does not disappoint! The text is very complete thorough review of facials as we know them, with hints of what we may yet discover.

The Crisis of Islamic Civilization, by Ali A. Allawi

Islam as a religion is central to the lives of over a billion people, but its outer expression as a distinctive civilization has been undergoing a monumental crisis. Buffeted by powerful adverse currents, Islamic civilization today is a shadow of its former self. The most disturbing and possibly fatal of these currents—the imperial expansion of the West into Muslim lands and the blast of modernity that accompanied it—are now compounded by a third giant wave, globalization.

These forces have increasingly tested Islam and Islamic civilization for validity, adaptability, and the ability to hold on to the loyalty of Muslims, says Ali A. Allawi in his provocative new book. While the faith has proved resilient in the face of these challenges, other aspects of Islamic civilization have atrophied or died, Allawi contends, and Islamic civilization is now undergoing its last crisis.

The book explores how Islamic civilization began to unravel under colonial rule, as its institutions, laws, and economies were often replaced by inadequate modern equivalents. Allawi also examines the backlash expressed through the increasing religiosity of Muslim societies and the spectacular rise of political Islam and its terrorist offshoots. Assessing the status of each of the building blocks of Islamic civilization, the author concludes that Islamic civilization cannot survive without the vital spirituality that underpinned it in the past. He identifies a key set of principles for moving forward, principles that will surprise some and anger others, yet clearly must be considered.

From Publishers Weekly
Allawi (The Occupation of Iraq), former minister of defense and minister of finance in Iraq's postwar governments, offers his version of the causes and consequences of the decline of Islamic civilization and proposals for its rejuvenation. The author argues that the West's violent encroachment on the Muslim world in the 19th and 20th centuries shattered local institutions and economies and disrupted any natural evolution of Islamic society; furthermore, current efforts to modernize the faith amount to draping an entire civilization in ill-fitting, inorganic ideas. Allawi calls for a return to the creative and artistic heritage of Islam and a restoration of balance—between the physical and the spiritual... between men and women; between rights and duties—while suggesting that the time to find balance may soon run out. The writing is erudite and the conclusions fascinating, but Allawi's dismissive attitude toward Western societies and their mass rejection... of the cardinal virtues, not least wisdom and moderation, as well as a reluctance to accommodate anything other than a faith-based understanding of human reality might limit his audience. From School Library Journal
Allawi (The Occupation of Iraq) investigates the pathways that led to the deterioration of the Islamic civilization, known for its splendid culture between the eighth and 12th centuries. The inadaptability of Islam to modern life, the author argues, stems from its deep roots in the sacred. To be modern, according to Allawi, is to be liberated from the divine as the sole source of ethics and virtues. Allawi demonstrates that the individual in Islam is not an autonomous entity—a common principle in all religions—rather, its essence is driven from a complete submission to the godly creeds. He notes that the secularization of Muslim societies, which seemed to be on track until the mid-1970s, has shattered, giving way to political Islam. He suggests that the failure of Muslim societies to address the challenges and the threat of fast-growing Western cultural imperialism deepened their crisis. In an analytic, journalistic style, Allawi presents views about modern Islam that are both stimulating and informative. This provocative book is recommended for informed readers.—Sadiq Alkoriji, South Regional Lib., Broward Cty., FL

A thorough "insiders" account of Islam struggling...
By Roi Soleil
I've read a number of books on Islam's crisis, but this is the first I've read one actually written by a Muslim. Allawi was not just an Iraqi minister, he is at least partly educated in the West and clearly a first rate intellectual in any event. Allawi delivers a balanced view of Islam's difficulties coping with the modern world; he heaps significant blame on the West for repeatedly taking advantage of weaker Muslim countries, but he also doesn't hold back on his criticisms of Islam's many problems. His bottom line is that Muslims have lost their way and the true essence of Islam, and that is individual responsibility for dedicating one's life to the foundation of the religion. Living in harmony within the community, mutual respect and modesty (men and women, inside and out), staying in touch with one's environment and actively seeking knowledge that will lead to a closer relationship with God. He argues that the West has long since lost it's soul and the corrupt/despotic regimes of most Arab countries simply ape the most vulgar and despicable elements of Western "civilization." In my mind, he lays out a compelling argument for all of us losing our way.

It's truly an excellent book for anyone really interested in Islam's struggle, it's not necessarily for someone looking for a book focused on terrorists/fundamentalism/extremism. However, he does explain the the split in Islam between the Sufi and the Wahabi/Salafist extremists whom he explains have lost their way...and ability to think. The Wahabi/Salafists take every element of the Koran and Sharia as literal and are intellectually incapable of understanding nuance. Allawi argues that these extremists have no true knowledge of Islam and what it really means. It presents convincing arguments which detail Islams inability to find solutions to modern problems because there is no central authority to manage development of either Islam's interpretation/development. Shia clerics fare better than the hodge podge of Sunni clerics and self-appointed "experts" in the Taliban, al-Qaida and other gangs. He argues that the rise of the Wahabi/Salafists has actually degraded Islam because of all the pretenders issuing fatwas and continually misinterpreting Sharia and the Koran. Their focus on the ridiculous, like requiring facial hair on men, covered women, no school for girls etc...reveals their stupidity and ignorance of Islam...a religion steeped in science/math/medicine over the centuries.

Excellent read for those who want to better understand what's ailing one of the world's great religions. Its also revealing for a Westerner wondering about what's ailing us as well.

What The Crisis Really Is
By Brian M. O'Rourke
This is a book that everyone should read, not because it is so good, but because it shows hows incredibly fractured are the thought processes of even leading Islamic intellectuals. The book is constant whine. Allawi is fair. He doesn't like the West, he doesn't like Islamic extremists. But his perspective on life shows how far apart the West and Islamic civilizations potentially are. His instincts are to deny any sense of individual rights or freedoms in consession to some mystical need for "community." In fact, he treats mysticism as central to his culture and something that the West has denigrated. He wants Islamic Science, deriding the impact of Western Science on the world or at least his world. As a scientist, a Western scientist, I truly believe that science belongs to the world. The approach and philosophy of science are not Western alone. Allawi wants a science that reinforces the idea of God as the creator. He's entitle to his view, but he cannot change the course of scientific philosophy.

The worst part of this book is his dismissal of criticism about treatment of heretics and apostates. So what if they are killed? It's no big deal, he argues, and it's all blown out of proportion by the Western press. I think if Allawi stood in front of a crowd about to stone him to death, he might just elevate his perspective on individual rights.

He whines. He does not offer one detailed solution. If he represents the Islamic elite, our war will be be endless.

A balanced book
By Ihab Hamdi
The book is well written, in a balanced tone analyzing the differences between Islam as a comprehensive way of life and the "Islamic States". The book offers a valid point of view as a counter argument to the "Clash of Civilizations". It provides the reader with an eloquent description of the role of Islam in the Islamic civilization, and how the absence of the application of Islam, and not its presence, is the reason for the crisis. When I started reading the book I was skeptical, because of its name, that it is another half baked book written contributing to the Islam and Muslim bashing that became "en vogue" after the attacks on 9/11. To my delight, I found it a well researched book, portraying the bright face of Islam, and its positive impact on the human civilization. The book provides areas of compactibility and congruence between Islam and current world affairs including, but not limited to, human rights, the environment, minority rights, and the concept of citizenship and state system in Islam, as well as the relationship and interaction between the Islamic civilization and other states/civilzations.
