In architecture, the vast plan and overwhelming authority of the imperial buildings is discussed in contrast with the restrained subtlety of domestic architecture and garden design, where magnificent rocks were the principal feature just as in landscape painting. The survey concludes by examining the development of East/West trade and the effects of commercialization on Chinese arts and crafts. This is a handsome, well-illustrated book that will be a valuable and illuminating resource for all who are interested in the arts of China.

William Watson is emeritus professor of Chinese art and archaeology at the University of London. Chuimei Ho is adjunct curator of East and Southeast Asian art and archaeology at the Field Museum in Chicago.

Wonderful book for scholars

I have recently started reading this book, having 'browsed' through it earlier. I've read the chapters on Painting and on Snuff Bottles thoroughly. It is well written, but the Chinese Painting chapters are very scholarly and 'dense' (not easily absorbed, at least by me), a bit hard going.
And a quote in French, without a translation, is a bit stupid. Not everyone is fluent in French (I know I'm not), and it is irritating not to know what this quote says.
Other chapters are much easier to comprehend, and all the material is very informative. There are some minor errors in the Snuff Bottle chapter, but on the whole, it is very good.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Arts in China in this period, especially to serious students of the subject.

Part 3 of a set.

This is a beautiful book with good information, well organized.
However it was described as having 320 pages and there are something like 275, which was disappointing.
Aside from that I like it better than the first volume (to 900) and the subject is more interesting to me than the second period.

The book is very interesting and well-written. I was disappointed in the size of the pictures. I was hoping the plates would be bigger.
