Hugh Lofting’s storybooks about a British doctor who could speak to animals have been classics almost since they first appeared in 1920. Anderson, a linguistics and cognitive psychology professor at Yale, doesn’t dispute the literary merits of Lofting’s work, but he does want to establish that Doctor Dolittle’s talent is all fiction. Anderson makes a careful argument to defend this conclusion, methodically examining what we actually know about animal communication and simultaneously building up a case for what makes human language unique. He revisits the usual discussions about animals’ abilities, from the intricate "dance" of honeybees to the warning calls of vervet monkeys and the sign language learned by lab chimpanzees. His lengthy chapter on syntax is fairly technical and may be difficult for lay readers to navigate, but Anderson does his best to make this arcane subject intelligible because it forms the crux of his book: he identifies syntax as "the essence of language," the primary barrier that animals can’t surmount. In reviewing previous claims that animals have language, he insists on the distinction between language and communication—sometimes a fine difference that appears to necessitate lengthy, confusing explanations that incorporate physics, biology and language theory. Despite its use of enlightening examples and fascinating details of animal behavior, this book is best suited for students of psychology and linguistics. But anyone interested enough in the subject to work through it will find a skillfully made case that even devoted animal admirers might find hard to dismiss.

A good linguistics book

This book is an interesting and effective examination of linguistics and the human language. It focuses a lot on what define human language and why animals do not truly have the capacity to communicate in the same way humans can. This book does give and interesting insight into some forms of animal communication but it focus mostly on the syntax and diction that fuse for form the arbitrary and structural uniqueness of human communication.

Overall a solid and interesting book if your looking for introduction to human linguistics.

Amazing animals, but not language

For those who believe that gorillas are "just this close" to writing Shakespeare, this book is a good wake-up call. In it, Anderson discusses the amazing communicative abilities of a number of animals, but concludes that we really can't call this "language," for a number of reasons. Like so many, I have enjoyed the Doctor Dolittle books immensely, and it is fun to imagine talking to animals. But it seems an impossibility. This is not just a religious or species-centric prejudice. As Anderson points out, "Actually …linguists would be delighted and intrigued to discover language in other primates – or cockroaches, for that matter. When we look closely, however (and experimenters have tried awfully hard), that is not what we find. It appears to be an empirical result, not just an anthropocentric prejudice, that human language is uniquely human." (page 4)

As a veteran professor of linguistics, Anderson is well qualified to discuss what the nature of language is, and he keeps this to a somewhat popular level. His chapter on Syntax is probably the most challenging for the non-linguist. His other chapters discussing the nature of language are more accessible, and give the layman a good idea of what we really mean when we talk about human language. One illustration is that human languages have syntax, words arranged in a particular order. We say "the red book," not "book the red." Beyond that, languages have more structure. We can say "The cat on the mat is sleeping," and "the cat on the mat" is a phrase that can move as a unit ("I see the cat on the mat") or we can substitute a single pronoun for this multi-word phrase ("It is sleeping.") Furthermore, we can have phrases within phrases ("The cat on the mat by the door in that room...") All human languages can do this type of thing. This is one of the two major themes of the book - what are we really talking about when we use the term "language"?

The other theme is a survey of some of the amazing animal communication systems out there - honeybees' "tail-wagging dance" that indicates whee other bees should go to find food, birdsong structure, and primates' communication in the wild. He concludes that none of these exhibit syntax and a number of other characteristics of language, when rigorously examined.

He also spends a chapter on attempts to teach apes sign language in experimental settings. This alone might be worth the price of the book, especially debunking the overblown claims about Koko the "signing gorilla." Koko's trainer, Penny Patterson, has never released her experimental data, and we are left with unsubstantiated claims and over-interpretations.

I would recommend this book as a good readable approach to the whole subject of what animals can and cannot do. They can do some pretty amazing things, and Anderson celebrates those. But let's not call it "language."

A nice mixture of research and anecdotes for a layman like me. I will always respect animal communications, but better understand now why animals will never truly talk.

About the Author
Liliana Heker is the author of five volumes of short stories and two novels and the founding editor of two literary magazines widely read in Latin America. During Argentina’s years of violent repression (1976–83), she continued to write and edit left-wing literary journals while also helping to give voice to authors silenced by the regime. She lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Alberto Manguel, an internationally acclaimed author and reader, writes in both English and Spanish.

The purpose of the Workshop and the resulting book was to give a unifying approach towards study of beneficial and deleterious effects of autoxidation, based on rigorous scientific considerations. It is our hope that the material presented in this book will not only provide a review of the "state of the art" of autoxidation and anti oxidants, but also reflect the interaction which occurred during the Workshop between workers using model sytems, and food and biological systems.

The survey concludes by examining the development of East/West trade and the effects of commercialization on Chinese arts and crafts. This is a handsome, well-illustrated book that will be a valuable and illuminating resource for all who are interested in the arts of China.

Wonderful book for scholars

I have recently started reading this book, having 'browsed' through it earlier. I've read the chapters on Painting and on Snuff Bottles thoroughly. It is well written, but the Chinese Painting chapters are very scholarly and 'dense' (not easily absorbed, at least by me), a bit hard going.
And a quote in French, without a translation, is a bit stupid. Not everyone is fluent in French (I know I'm not), and it is irritating not to know what this quote says.
Other chapters are much easier to comprehend, and all the material is very informative. There are some minor errors in the Snuff Bottle chapter, but on the whole, it is very good.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Arts in China in this period, especially to serious students of the subject.

This is a beautiful book with good information, well organized.
However it was described as having 320 pages and there are something like 275, which was disappointing.
Aside from that I like it better than the first volume (to 900) and the subject is more interesting to me than the second period.

Secondly, the ideas of supersymmetry have enabled theoreticians to combine gravity with other elementary particle interactions, and to construct what is perhaps the first approach to a more finite quantum theory of gravitation, which is known as super gravity.

The Credentials of Thomas Eakins as a Draughtsman

Just when you thought you knew all the ins and outs of the life of one of America's greatest artists, Thomas Eakins, even through attending one of the many fine museum exhibitions of his work that seem to be always in circulation, up pops this publication brought out some five years ago - a first publication of Eakins' 'textbook' on drawing, based on his lectures at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In the well written introductory comments curator and editor Kathleen A. Foster -with tongue in cheek - shares the fact that Eakins rarely spent time with pencil in hand, preferring to guide his students to the brush as soon as possible.

In an essay by Amy B. Werbel we learn that Thomas Eakins was a devoted teacher and had planned to publish all of his lectures and notes and attendant scribbles at some point in his life, but when the scandalous dismissal of Eakins from the Academy occurred, the promised manuscripts were tucked away privately. But thanks to Yale University Press and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art we now have access to the artist's fine techniques of perspective drawing. The drawing manual offers student artists a unique opportunity to meet Eakins as instructor, to get a feel for his personality and teaching philosophy, and understand why he was renowned as an effective teacher. According to Amy Foster "The first five chapters are the most detailed and complete, and the most thoroughly illustrated, carrying the student through the principles and methods of three drawing systems: linear perspective, mechanical drawing and isometric drawing." The best explanation of perspective drawing

Eakins' manual demonstrates both his mastery of perspective (which is well-known) and his experience teaching, of which I was previously unaware. This slim book is an excellent read both for the practicing artist and for anyone interested in understanding how Eakins and his fellows achieved their results. Or, for that matter, anyone interested in 3D computer graphics or television viewing.

It explains a practical and intuitive method for accurate drawing, without recourse to algebra or the misleading reduction to parallel lines endemic to art-class perspective exercises. The explanation that a two-dimensional image can only provide proper perspective when viewed from a particular distance is missing from nearly every treatment of the subject. With this measurement in mind, Eakins explains precisely how large an object must be drawn according to its real size and apparent position.

The charming introduction explains how the manual came to be first published 100 years after it was written.

Not for most student drawers.

This is a sweet little book based on Eakins's lectures on drawing but most of the book is concerned with perspective, and creating grids and so on, to build drawings on. It is VERY technical, and might appeal to very Virgo-esque student drawers, but I think for most people it is best either as a souvenir of Eakins and his wonderful body of work, or somebody who is really into mechanical drawing.
