About the Author
Martine Batchelor spent ten years in a Korean monastery studying Zen Buddhism. She works as a lecturer and spiritual advisor, and her books include Principles of Zen, Walking on Lotus Flowers, and Buddhism and Ecology. She lives in the South of France.
Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Born in northeastern Tibet in 1935, he was as a toddler recognized as the incarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and brought to Tibet's capital, Lhasa. In 1950, Mao Zedong's Communist forces made their first incursions into eastern Tibet, shortly after which the young Dalai Lama assumed the political leadership of his country. In 1959, Chinese forces occupied the city, forcing His Holiness to escape to India. There he set up the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, working to secure the welfare of the more than 100,000 Tibetan exiles and prevent the destruction of Tibetan culture. In his capacity as a spiritual and political leader, he has traveled to more than sixty-two countries on six continents and met with presidents, popes, and leading scientists to foster dialogue and create a better world. In recognition of his tireless work for the nonviolent liberation of Tibet, the Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. In 2012, he relinquished political authority in his exile government and turned it over to democratically elected representatives. He is the author of numerous books, including "The Good Heart", "The Meaning of Life", "The World of Tibetan Buddhism", and "The Compassionate Life".

Martine Batchelor's new translation of the Brahma Net Sutra offers timely commentary on the core guiding principles for Buddhist ethics. Batchelor's detailed and helpful introduction sets the sutra in historical context, showing its central role in the development of the boddhisattva precepts as Buddhism took root in China. Her careful analysis is based on mature professional practice and teaching experience that emphasizes compassion as a foundation for ethical action. The work reflects Batchelor's profound respect for the precepts as a 'brilliant lamp' lighting the way toward clarity and insight. But tracing Confucian and Taoist streams of thought, Martine Batchelor shows how Chinese Buddhists incorporated filial piety as a practice of compassion and as basis for harmonious monastic relations. As an additional reference, Batchelor includes a full translation of the Tibetan boddhisatva vows as a further evolution of the precepts. The Buddha gave clear instructions about how a boddhisattva should preserve and nurture the altruistic aspiration to enlightenment that are contained in the scriptures of the various Mahayana traditions. In his Foreword to Martine Batchelor’s new translation of the Brahma’s Net Sutra of the Chinese and Korean traditions, H.H. The Dalai Lama reminds us of how for thousands of years the bodhisattva precepts have laid the foundation of an ethical way of life and the essential ground to a life of compassion for many Buddhists in East Asia. The bodhisattva precepts can be an important source of encouragement to protect life in all its forms and to work towards a more peaceful and understanding world. The Brahma’s Net Sutra is a valuable text which was composed in China between 440 and 480 CE to meet the needs of Chinese people living a Buddhist way of life and it formed an important bridge in that it demonstrated that Buddhist ethical conduct was compatible with Confucian notions of filial piety.
The Path of Compassion includes not only the translation but also Martine Batchelor’s introduction, which describes both personal experience of witnessing people first receiving the precepts in a monastery in Korea and her own experience of living the precepts, and the history of the development of the precepts and of the Brahma’s Net Sutra. Martine Batchelor’s introduction adds greatly to the book’s value. The translation itself is from Korean vernacular editions of the Chinese text and comprises five sections: The Preparation – the ceremony before taking the precepts, The Origin of the Bodhisattva Precepts, The Ten Major and Forty-eight Secondary Precepts, The Conclusion, and The Apology and Dedication. This beautiful verse of dedication concludes the work:
Rare are the merits and virtues which proceed from reciting the precepts.
So may this limitless happiness now be dedicated to all living beings.
I truly hope that all creatures drowning [in the ocean of suffering]
May quickly be born in the land of Amitabha.

Good translation and informative introduction.

Martine Batchelor has done an excellent job with her translation of an important Mahayana Buddhist text. The introduction makes up the first third of the book. In the introduction, Batchelor lays out the history and context of the text in a very lucid and accessible manner.
