Marinetti (1876-1944) is widely known as the founder of Futurism, an early twentieth-century cultural revolution that began as a literary movement and expanded to influence painters, musicians, dramatists, architects, and graphic artists throughout the world. This volume, a translation of more than forty poems and prose works by Marinetti, presents premier examples of his rich poetic creations, many for the first time in English. The collection has been selected by Luce Marinetti to represent the entire span of the poet's career, and it includes works originally written in either French or Italian, Marinetti's two primary languages. The volume begins with Marinetti's early lyrical works, poems that exemplify styles and themes that he later reacted against in his own manifestos. It continues with his poems of battle, in which Marinetti used the language of machines and explosions to express his view of poetry as reportage from the front; "Words in Freedom," in which he declared war on poetry by destroying syntax and spelling and by experimenting with typography; and finally love poems to his wife, Benedetta, in which he returned in part to subjects and forms that he had previously rejected. The volume includes a prefatory biography of Marinetti written by Luce Marinetti, as well as a critical review by Paolo Valesio of Marinetti's accomplishment as a poet.

I love Marinetti but it would have been nice to see the original Italian for some things, especially Zang Tumb Tumb, as well as more of Marinetti's own typography and layout. Maybe it would have gone over a page limit somewhere. It's still a handsome book though.

Revised and superior in every way

I think The New West, published in 1974, as setting the scene with chapters titled: Prairie; Tracts & Mobile Homes; City & Foothills and Adams then localizes it with his remarkable photo essay: denver (originally published in 1977). This revised edition is the perfect photo book.

The five chapter's present Denver, from the perspective of four years from 1970, as a vibrant growing Western city and Adams artfully covers the expanding suburbs into the countryside with a detached eye. The commercial core, with its predictable high-rise towers is virtually ignored (summed up with just one photo).

One thing that makes the book work so well is the sequencing and Adams mentions that in the original version he left some pages blank which he now thinks breaks the pace so this edition has an image on each page. I noticed that many photos tend to divide the frame into horizontal sections and nicely every few pages there is a photo where uprights are dominant. Several spreads have darker photos facing lighter images. This all contributes, perhaps unconsciously, in the viewer a feeling of satisfaction as the pages are turned.

It's all very well having stunning photos but I've seen (and own) several photo books where the actual book detracts from the contents. With denver everything works perfectly. The design was by Katy Homans, who I felt contributed to the success of several Lee Friedlander titles, Thomas Palmer did the separations and you can see how good these are by looking at the sky in any of the photos. You can see clouds and texture which in many photo books just fade into the whiteness of the paper. Meridian Printing did their bit too. You don't see many books that are printed in six hundred line screen and with denver there is a spot varnish to almost lift the images of the page. A beautifully produced book of stunning images.

Book collectors are going to be in a quandary with this edition. It has twenty-six more photos than the original, better pacing and far better printing. The first edition has increased in value and I expect this one will too because it is a superior version.

Wow! I own the 1st Edition of this book and hands down the 2nd Edition (this edition) is superior. This maybe my favorite book by Robert Adams although all of R. Adams's books succeed on very high levels of discourse: "What We Bought", "Commercial/Residential", "Eden", Missouri West", "The New West", and all the others (non are lacking). I am a product of the 60's and 70's and "Denver" achieves a level of record that perfectly matches the highest ideals of Walker Evans; I see in these pictures those things I experienced and witnessed in Rochester, NY as a kid and also long for now. Adams maybe the greatest documentary photographer of our time.

Bawden (The Cushion Book, Abbeville, 1995) and Reeves have the answer. Castoffs are traditionally used in rag rugs, and Bawden has instructions for hooked, braided, and woven rugs, as well as a British variation of reverse hooking called "prodded." In addition to general instructions and several projects, her book has a gallery of works by other designers. Reeves ventures into rag chair seats, greeting cards, wreaths, and jewelry, as well as the usual rugs. Her use of cut-up knit sweaters is unusual and effective. All her projects have step-by-step instructions and lists of materials. Both books are colorful and very practical.

For several years I have been collecting books about rag rugs. Finally, I've found one I'll read over and over again.

This book is aptly named. It is truly a book of inspiration, featuring creative designs by a variety of artists. Indeed worthy of a place in the rag rug library. With help from the many wonderful color photos featured, you'll find there is no boundary, no limit to the creativity when making a rag rug.

Several methods are shown, including braided, prodded, hooked and more.

I highly advise adding this one to your collection.

Any book that gives me inspiration is an asset to my crafting library.....and this one does not disappoint. Patterns can be used for rug hooking, punch needle, or any other fiber art.

Fascinating account of colonial soldiering

From January 1942 to October 1945, John Nunneley served with the King's African Rifles, commanding the askaris in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Burma and India. His memoir portrays the vanished world of wartime colonial Africa, and also records the terrifying nature of the war against the Japanese Army.
In spring 1944, British armies defeated the Japanese Army at the battles of Imphal and Kohima, saving India from invasion. Nunneley played his part in this forgotten war, fighting against Japan's elite `White Tigers' during their retreat through the rain-sodden, disease-ridden jungles of Burma. He was mentioned in despatches for his leadership of successful jungle reconnaissance and fighting patrols, and he was wounded in hand-to-hand combat.
He writes movingly about the ethical dilemmas that war inevitably presents, and about the nature of leadership. He recounts the story of Lieutenant Harward, who was accused of abandoning his men when under attack during the 1879 war against the Zulus. The court martial acquitted him, but his commander-in-chief, Sir Garnet Wolseley, refused to confirm the verdict.
Wolseley wrote indignantly, "Had I released this officer without making any remarks upon the verdict in question, it would have been a tacit acknowledgement that I concurred in what appears to me a monstrous theory, viz., that a regimental officer who is the only officer present with a party of soldiers actually and seriously engaged with the enemy, can, under any pretext whatever, be justified in leaving them to their fate. The more helpless a position in which an officer finds his men, the more it is his bounden duty to stay and share their fortune, whether for good or ill."
Unfortunately, after the war Nunneley did not perhaps put his leadership skills to the best use. He became a deputy director of Beaverbrook Newspapers (1956-62) and then a director of the British Railways Board (1962-87). He was a member of Lord Beeching's three-man team that produced the infamous Report in 1963.

About the Author
Valerie Eliot, née Esmé Valerie Fletcher, is the widow and literary executor of the Nobel Prize–winning poet T. S. Eliot. She became Eliot's second wife in 1957, and their marriage continued until his death in 1965. In addition to editing the first two volumes of the poet's letters, she has edited T. S. Eliot: The Waste Land, a Facsimile & Transcript of the Original Drafts. She lives in London. Hugh Haughton is professor of English at the University of York, and author of The Poetry of Derek Mahon.
