This handsomely illustrated volume features a comprehensive listing of outstanding type designers from around the world, ranging from Johann Gutenberg (c. 1394–1468) to the present day. Arranged alphabetically by designer, the book  features the work of more than 260 figures in type design, many of whom are among the field’s most renowned—including Morris Fuller Benton, Matthew Carter, Adrian Frutiger, Claude Garamond, Eric Gill, Frederic W. Goudy, Bruce Rogers, and Hermann Zapf—as well as entries on lesser-known designers whose contributions to typography are substantial. Entries are illustrated by examples of the designers’ work taken from posters, private press editions, magazine covers, book designs, and rare archival specimens.

An A–Z of Type Designers also features eight essays by leading contemporary typographers Jonathan Barnbrook, Erik van Blokland, Clive Bruton, John Downer, John Hudson, Jean François Porchez, Erik Spiekermann, and Jeremy Tankard. These authors discuss different aspects of contemporary type design, including typeface revivals, font piracy, and designing fonts for corporate identities.

A comprehensive account of the figures who shaped the history and evolution of typography, this book is an essential reference for both graphic designers and students.

a concise survey and great reference
By Ricky B
I clicked the "click to Look Inside!" button and after reading two of the essays then decided to order the book. However, I have owned prior editions of Rookledge's International Handbook of Type Designers, which as the introduction states, "this book succeeds." And it succeeds many times better. This book is a great quick reference to historic and contemporary type designers, each entry includes all of the typefaces designed and a biography that is short and concise and each entry is nicely illustrated with captions for the illustrative art. The eight essays are all well written and enjoyable reads.

Disappointed in Content
By Amazon Customer
This book is extremely attractive, and offers a huge variety of type faces to look at. It's fun to page through, but I was annoyed to find that the title refers to the biographies of the designers, while giving very little material on the aesthetic and design aspects of the faces they produced.

Personally, I'm not very interested in the lives of these men. I reviewed this book in a store before I ordered online, but I was so taken by the design of it, I didn't read enough of the text to see its weakness. Shame on me!

Among the Gentiles: Greco-Roman Religion and Christianity (The Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library), by Luke Timothy Johnson

The question of Christianity’s relation to the other religions of the world is more pertinent and difficult today than ever before. While Christianity’s historical failure to appreciate or actively engage Judaism is notorious, Christianity’s even more shoddy record with respect to “pagan” religions is less understood. Christians have inherited a virtually unanimous theological tradition that thinks of paganism in terms of demonic possession, and of Christian missions as a rescue operation that saves pagans from inherently evil practices.

In undertaking this fresh inquiry into early Christianity and Greco-Roman paganism, Luke Timothy Johnson begins with a broad definition of religion as a way of life organized around convictions and experiences concerning ultimate power. In the tradition of William James’s Variety of Religious Experience, he identifies four distinct ways of being religious: religion as participation in benefits, as moral transformation, as transcending the world, and as stabilizing the world. Using these criteria as the basis for his exploration of Christianity and paganism, Johnson finds multiple points of similarity in religious sensibility.

Christianity’s failure to adequately come to grips with its first pagan neighbors, Johnson asserts, inhibits any effort to engage positively with adherents of various world religions.  This thoughtful and passionate study should help break down the walls between Christianity and other religious traditions.

From Publishers Weekly
Defending the Christian religion against Greco-Roman paganism, the early Christian writer Tertullian once famously asked, What indeed does Athens have to do with Jerusalem? In his thoughtful, judicious and provocative new book, New Testament scholar Johnson answers, Plenty. Drawing deeply upon Greco-Roman literature, Johnson isolates four ways of being religious in the Greco-Roman world: the way of participation in divine benefits, the way of moral transformation, the way of transcending the world and the way of stabilizing the world. He illustrates each type of religiosity with a sketch of a Greco-Roman writer or text. Johnson then places this template of religiosity on the Christianity of the first through fourth centuries to illustrate how deeply embedded Greco-Roman patterns of religion influenced and contributed to the growth of Christianity. Johnson's careful and compelling approach avoids both the apologetic and the antagonistic tones that such conversations about early Christianity and Hellenistic religions often take. (Nov.)

Review
“Luke Johnson, a contrarian of the most constructive kind, defying all the usual categories, looks at the age-old story of Christianity’s ‘triumph’ over ‘paganism’ and turns it topsy turvy. A provocative and deeply humane book, to be savored and argued with.”—Wayne A. Meeks, author of First Urban Christians

(Wayne A. Meeks)

“Seeking to overturn an attitude towards Greco-Roman religion epitomized in Tertullian's famous rejection of Athens, Johnson demonstrates four ways of being religious that were common to Greeks, Romans, Jews, and early Christians. The work is important not only for the study of ancient religion, but for inter-faith dialogue today.”—Gregory E. Sterling, University of Notre Dame

(Gregory E. Sterling)

“A remarkable synthesis that challenges reigning assumptions about early Christianity’s relationship to the Graeco-Roman world, this book proposes new analytical categories to advance and enliven the ongoing ‘Christ and culture’ debate.”—Carl R. Holladay, Emory University

(Carl R. Holladay)

“In this important, well-documented, and challenging book, Johnson shows forcefully how demonizing and deprecating other religions has not served early Christianity well in the past, obscured its development, and has left a pernicious legacy.”—Frederick E. Brenk, Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome

(Frederick E. Brenk)

"In [Johnson's] thoughtful, judicious and provocative new book. . . . [his] careful and compelling approach avoids both the apologetic and the antagonistic tones that. . . conversations about early Christianiry and Hellenistic religions often rake."—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly 2009-09-14)

“One of those rare books that is at once an excellent reference work and a great read . . . it promises to change the way most of us understand early Christianity.”--Timothy Beal, Christian Century

"A stunning achievement."—David L. Balch, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly (David L. Balch The Catholic Biblical Quarterly)

"The author's discussion of the religious symphony that is polytheism is very helpful and clear—this is by no means usual and is to be applauded. . . . This volume is a valuable edition to the Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library. It is richly annotated, provoking thought and questions and providing the notes and resources needed to pursue those questions further. I believe it achieves the author's goal of presenting Greco-Roman religious practice and sensibility without the Christian apologetics and value judgments that have so often obscured the appreciation of this rich and unique tradition."—Lynn Lidonnici, Journal of Church History (Lynn Lidonnici Journal of Church History)

"Who will fail to benefit from this stimulatingly provocative contribution from Luke Timothy Johnson?"—James D.G. Dunn, Interpretation (James D.G. Dunn Interpretation)

A New Typology for Greco-Roman/Christian Religious Understanding
By A Certain Bibliophile
Many religious people choose to focus on those things that make their religion unique, ahistorically separating it from the cultures and other religions in and around which it originally formed. It makes sense that several kinds of contemporary Christianity would do the same. For those looking for a scholarly, well-argued position against the singular historical uniqueness of Christianity, Luke Timothy Johnson provides an excellent one in "Among the Gentiles."

Johnson feels that illustrating lines of continuity between Greco-Roman paganism, Jewish traditions, and nascent Christianity opens up the possibility of dialogue, as well as providing a space where the comparative history of religions can take place stripped of the limiting, often judgmental assumptions of contemporary conservative Christian apologetics. Any project with this type of scope requires tools which allow for the analysis of those types of continuity at which Johnson is looking.

Methodologically, he proposes a fourfold religious typology which claims will be useful in looking at all of these traditions; even though Johnson teaches in a school of theology, he avoids any theological language in any of these. What he calls "Religiousness A" is the participation in divine benefits, including "revelation through prophecy, healing through revelation, providing security and status through Mysteries, enabling and providing for the daily successes of individuals, households, cities, and empires." This type of religious practice is optimistic in believing that the world is a stage for divine activity, and pragmatic in that "salvation involves security and success in this mortal life." Johnson says that Greek orator Aelius Aristides embodies this type. In several of Aristides' orations, he singles out for praise Serapis (who protected him on his journey to Egypt) and Asclepius (who bestowed the gift of oratory upon him).

Religiousness B is moral transformation, which exemplifies the belief that "the divine [spirit] is immanent within human activity and expressed through moral transformation." The pagan example here is the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, whose Enchiridion is quite literally a "handbook for the moral life," detailing how to manage desires and emotions and learn one's social duties.

Religiousness C attempts to transcend the world, since "the divine is not found in material processes of the world but only in the realm of immortal spirit and light. Salvation is rescuing the spark of light that has fallen into a bodily prison and returning it, through asceticism and death itself, to the realm from which it first came. It is triumph through escape." Johnson selects as an example of Religiousness C the Poimandres, a selection from the Corpus Hermeticum (a complex set of texts of Egyptian origin associated with the revealer-god Hermes Trismegistus).

Religiousness D tries to stabilize the world, consisting largely of "all ministers and mystagogues of cults, all prophets who translated oracles and examined entrails and Sibylline utterances, all therapists who aided the god Asclepius in his healing work, all `liturgists' who organized and facilitated the festivals, all priests who carried out sacrifices, all Vestal Virgins whose presence and dedication ensured the permanence of the city." Johnson chooses Plutarch, the biographer, priest, and philosopher as the epitome of Religiousness D. Plutarch accepts the responsibility of exercising civic magistracies, shows a commitment to maintaining Apollo's temple at Delphi (as well as serving as a priest there), and expends a lot of effort in returning the temple to its former grandeur. Plutarch is a student of the social dimension of religion, and obviously is most concerned with how religion affects the reigning social order.

Johnson says that types A and B were already at work in the Christian world in the first century; he looks at type A in the apocryphal Gospels, Acts, and Montanism; type B is discussed in Clement of Rome, Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Polycarp. Religiousness C, "transcending the world," Johnson argues, does not appear until the second century, where its predominant idiom is found in the Gnostic writings discovered at Nag-Hammadi, and especially Irenaeus' refutation of Gnostic doctrine in "Adversus Haereses." Religiousness D, stabilizing the world, first became recognizable after 313's Edict of Milan, which marked the beginning of Constantine's adoption of Christianity as the official imperial religion, and grew even stronger after the appearance of political and communal power within the bishoprics around the Christian world.

If there was one criticism I have of the book, it would be that the fourfold typology is sometimes applied too strictly to situations where it doesn't apply as well as others. It is clear from the way Johnson phrases the language of the four types that he anticipates the rise of Christianity, and therefore molds them to accommodate it. Also, Johnson represents the types as if they were compartmentalized and essential, when in fact they bleed together and inform each others' practice. Surely transcendence was sometimes thought of as a gift bestowed by the gods, or that moral transformation can stabilize society, and so forth. Surely Johnson realizes this, but he has already performed quite the feat in establishing his thesis in a mere 280 pages.

Johnson is a Catholic, and his scholarship in this book truly is in the spirit of the "Nostra Aetate," the Second Vatican Council's rallying exhortation for a thoroughgoing ecumenism. The truth is that Johnson does have an agenda: one of inclusion, one whose goal is the "embrace of a catholicity of religious sensibility and expression." At the heart of Johnson's book is a call for Christians to embrace the fullness and complexity of their past, and to view this as a means of starting a conversation instead of stopping one.

I have simplified and adumbrated some of the arguments that Johnson makes in the book, because they really are too rich and fully textured to give them the treatment they deserve here. I recommend this highly for anyone with a catholic (lower-case c) attitude toward Christianity and Christian history, and anyone who wants to learn about the ways that Christianity borrowed from paganism during its first few centuries.

Four Centuries of Christian interaction with Roman and Greek religious persuasions.
By John Hudson
I was interested in filling in the context for the growth of Chrisitanity over the first four centuries, especially in connection with the Roman and Greek culture at the time. The book shows the many interactions in four areas, receiving the gifts and power of the divine, moral transformation, flight from the world, and stabiliization of life through the respective cultic activities. Aside from reading the original texts this provides a good summery and understanding of the material. It also as the author says is very relevant to understand how persons of the Christian persuasion have overly demonized other religious persuasions in a way that is not helpful in aa time of interfaith diversity.

A solid scholarly ground for contemporary congregational and regional ministry strategy
By Michael D. Haggin
I got and read this book in late 2013, and I have been excited about it ever since. On the one hand, it is a refreshing look at some interesting historical questions ... and I love history. But the most compelling part/other hand, it challenges us Church people to re-examine our practices in the present time and place. It has given me a whole new lens through which to see the successes and short-comings of our contemporary local churches. I am excited to apply these insights in our Presbytery's attempts to organize new congregations and re-vivify/re-purpose existing ones. I have spent a lifetime arguing for the relevance of history. Seldom does a work of history radiate practical relevance like this one does. Its ideas, findings, arguments need to be brought into all the contemporary conversations about American Christianity. Unfortunately relatively few of our colleagues will undertake the work it might take to follow and appreciate it. I take it as my responsibility to present the findings in their contemporary relevance to my neighbors -- which I am doing. But without the solid scholarly foundation, I would have nothing important to 'retail.' (Isn't that why we are called to be a learned ministry?)
Full disclosure: I came to know Luke Johnson when he was a junior faculty member at Yale Divinity School (and I an M.Div. student). I never took any of his courses, but I had quite a few enjoyable and profitable conversations with him then ... and maybe half-a-dozen through the years since then. He is one of the authors I read with greatest interest and profit. Few such first-rate scholars are also so helpful to the personal disciples of Christ and to the front-line congregational leaders.

Beautifully illustrated, beautifully printed
By John Matlock
This book is produced as a catalog to the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Also shown are items on loan from the Smithsonian, Victoria and Albert, the British Museum and others. It is the first in-depth examination of the fascinating and virtually unknown subject of armor and weapons from Tibet.

An isolated land-locked country, Tibet has been a crossroads of Tibetan, Mongol, Chinese, Nepalese and other states. Each of these has left behind an input on the design of weaponry including armor, for men and horses, and weapons including swords, bow/arrow, and guns.

The traditional Tibetan gun was a matchlock, even down until the beginning of the twentieth century. And the traditional Tibetan gun had an interesting bi-pod attached that I've not seen on guns from anywhere else.

There are additional essays by John Clarke, Curator, Department of Asian Art, Victoria and Albert Museum; Amy Heller, a Tibetologist and art historian affiliated with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (Paris); and Lozang Jamspal, Adjunct Professor, Department of Religion, Columbia University.

This book was produced in conjunction with a special exhibition presented at the museum from April 5 to July 2, 2006.

This book is amazing in both pictures and writing. If you are fascinated by any kind of history in weapons and armor this book is for you. I give it a 5 star as I am a hardcore armor geekanerd who loves armor. It's always great to find a book that can show historical pictures and writings that not only show cultural regional style but a glimpse to see how other cultures have altered the very same armor into other various hybrids.
This book is way too expensive to be a coffee table book. It should be given the proper respect by reading it as the information would enhance the pleasure of the visual pictures.
That being said, for those who like to purchase exotic picture books than this book is still for you. They are amazing.

very good book for China old arms study
By Zhang Hai
Because of the long war time 60 years ago in China, and later the revolution, almost all the cultule and old thing passed from generation to generation has been totolly destroied in this great land. We can not find a whole arm before Ding Dynasty(400 years ago).
But at the east ( Japan) and at the west ( culture at Tibert was not totally destroied) there reserved many arm and armer which comes from China mainland at Tang Dynasty ( 1300 years ago), not only the old arm and armer, but the skill to make these arm and armer.

Chinese will have a chance to know what China was in the old time, but only through these books.

Elements of Organic PhotochemistryFrom Springer

In the past fifteen years organic photochemistry has undergone a greater change and has stimulated more interest than probably any other area of organic chemistry. What has resulted is a population explosion, that is, an ever-increasing number of organic chemists are publishing important and exciting research papers in this area. Professor Bryce-Smith in the introduc tion to a recent volume of the Specialist Periodical Report (Photochemistry, Volume 6), which reviews the photochemical literature in yearly intervals, states that "the flood of photochemical literature is showing some signs of abatement from the high levels of two or three years ago .... " However, Volume 6 of that periodical contains 764 pages of excellent but very concise reviews. We expect the development of the mechanistic aspects of organic photo chemistry to continue at the present pace as new methods are developed to probe in increasing detail and shorter time scales the photochemical dynamics of both old and new photoreactions. Since photochemistry is no longer the sole domain of the specialist, it is relatively safe to predict a dramatic increase in the near future of the synthetic and industrial uses of organic photo chemistry .

Landscapes of London: The City, the Country, and the Suburbs, 1660–1840 (The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art), by Eliz

The idea of a "Greater London" emerged in the 18th century with the expansion of the city's suburbs. In Landscapes of London, Elizabeth McKellar traces this growth back to the 17th century, when domestic retreats were established in outlying areas. This transitional zone was occupied and shaped by the urban middle class as much as by the elite who built villas there. McKellar provides the first major interdisciplinary cultural history of this area, analyzing it in relation to key architectural and planning debates and to concepts of national, social, and gender identities. She draws on a wide range of source materials, including prints, paintings, maps, poetry, songs, newspapers, guidebooks, and other popular literature, as well as buildings and landscapes. The author suggests that these suburban landscapes—the first in the world—were a new environment, but one in which the vernacular, the rustic, and the historic played a substantial part. This fascinating investigation shows London as the forerunner of the complex, multifaceted modern cities of today.

Review
"Elizabeth McKellar is one of the most perceptive and sensible of architectural historians, and she understands London like few others. Her new book Landscapes of London will be important because we now know so much architectural innovation stemmed from cities and the mercantile classes that lived in them."—Simon Thurley, BBC History Magazine (Simon Thurley BBC History Magazine 2013-10-01)

Book of the Year, TLS (TLS 2013-11-29)

‘That rare thing, a scholarly volume of interest to the non-specialist. Tracing suburbia since the 17th century, McKellar shows historic London as the forerunner of today’s culturally and architecturally complex, multi-faceted cities; she made me look at the layers of the city I thought I knew with fresh eyes.’—Jackie Wullschlager, The Financial Times (Jackie Wullschlager Financial Times 2014-06-28)

"This book, a major contribution to cultural history, establishes that a suburban culture existed in London's rural-urban interface much earlier than the early-19th-century time period posited by conventional scholarship. McKellar employs a variety of sources, including guidebooks, art, music, and literature, to document the culture of the inhabitants of the suburban landscape that emerged in this zone in the 17th century."—E.H. Teague, CHOICE (E.H. Teague CHOICE 2014-07-01)

In 1980, the iconoclastic economist Julian Simon challenged celebrity biologist Paul Ehrlich to a bet. This book shows how the fight between Ehrlich and Simon - between environmental fears and free-market confidence - helped create the gulf separating environmentalists and their critics today.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Using a highly publicized thousand-dollar wager made between two scholars as a narrative framework, this gem of a book elucidates the extreme polarity between those who believe human ingenuity can solve the world's problems and those who foresee imminent doom. Sabin (Crude Politics) cleverly traces the ideological extremes through the careers of Paul Ehrlich, known for his warnings about explosive population growth, and his lesser known adversary Julian Simon, who advocated that technological advancement and market flexible would resolve threats of overpopulation. Sabin shows the evolution of both arguments through various presidencies. The Carter administration leaned toward Ehrlich's apocalyptic point of view; whereas Regan thought Simon's theories fit his own, especially in expanded energy production. The contrast between Al Gore and George W. Bush reflects the of polarization in the United States over environmental issues. Sabin offers a reasoned summary of the strengths and weaknesses on both sides, but ultimately he is interested in showing "how intelligent people are drawn to vilify their opponents and to reduce the issue that they care about to stark and divisive terms." To this end, Sabin provides a fascinating and highly readable archaeology of political science in America. (Sept.)

Review
“Provides surprising insights for anyone involved in addressing the world’s ‘wicked problems.’ Most of all, it gave me new perspective on why so many big challenges get bogged down in political battles rather than being focused on problem-solving."—Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, "The Best Books I Read in 2013," TheGatesNotes.com (Bill Gates TheGatesNotes.com)

“[A] gem of a book. . . Sabin provides a fascinating and highly readable archaeology of political science in America.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review (Publishers Weekly)

“Valuable . . . clear-eyed.” —Jonathan V. Last, The Wall Street Journal (Jonathan V. Last The Wall Street Journal)

“A brilliant idea for a book. . . . Sabin has produced an absorbing narrative of how two people’s ‘clashing insights’ unleashed on the world polarised views of the environmental and resource threats we face in the 21st century.”—Fred Pearce, New Scientist (Fred Pearce New Scientist)

“In his new book, The Bet, Paul Sabin has managed to write a work of serious historical scholarship about a vexing political issue — and make it read like a character-driven novel.”—David Leonhardt, The New York Times, Economix blog (David Leonhardt The New York Times, Economix blog)

“The Bet provides an important contribution to canonical works in environmental history and environmental studies. It is a remarkable story of a critical moment in the environmental movement, and Sabin has told it expertly.”—Frederick R. Davis, Florida State University (Frederick R. Davis 2013-03-14)

“In telling the story of Ehrlich and Simon's bet, Paul Sabin offers a compelling analysis of two very different, but equally important, ways of understanding the future of humans and the environment that still shape the world of environmental politics today."—Jay Turner, Wellesley College (Jay Turner 2013-03-14)

"Paul Sabin's The Bet is wonderfully conceived, sharply focused and entertainingly executed. In the story of a famous bet between two men of large egos, he manages to touch on the most basic problems we face in trying to come to terms with our current environmental crisis."—Richard White, author of Railroaded: The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America (Richard White 2013-04-04)

"Paul Sabin vividly and creatively explores the  half century battle over environmental policy by telling the story of the clash —and famous “bet” — between Paul Ehrlich, the prophet of population doom, and Julian Simon, the advocate of technology and  markets. My own wager is that The Bet will also provide a very valuable and timely framework for understanding today’s great environmental debates.  In fact, I will double down on that bet!”— Daniel Yergin, Pulitzer-prize winning author of The Quest:  Energy, Security, and the Remaking of the Modern World and of The Prize (Daniel Yergin 2013-05-13)

"Have you ever wondered why environmental politics became so bitterly divided along partisan party lines? Why does the left believe that climate change will harm us, while the right is certain that technological innovation will prevail? Paul Sabin’s smart, compelling analysis in The Bet helps us understand these ideological divides. Beautifully written, non-partisan, and filled with surprising insights, The Bet is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand modern environmental politics."—Nancy Langston, author of Toxic Bodies: DES and the Lessons of History (Nancy Langston 2013-05-13)

“Not so fast, argues historian Paul Sabin, who in The Bet attempts to use their wager to narrate parallel biographies of Simon and Ehrlich, as well as a US political environmental history of the past half-century. The result is a revealing tale.”—Jon Christensen, Nature (Nature Jon Christensen 2013-08-15)

"Informative, charming, and highly readable."—Tyler Cowen, Marginal Revolution (Tyler Cowen Marginal Revolution)

Fascinating and (surprisingly!) entertaining
By friedpollakman
This book is essential reading for environmentalists, economists, students of public policy, and anybody interested in modern history. It tells the story of a bet between an environmentalist and an economist. As an environmentalist, it has made me question assumptions about the relationship between population growth and scarcity that has been a driver of the environmental movement for the last 40 years. If folks on both sides of environmental politics would read this book, we might be able to actually move forward.

What made this book such a treat to read, however, is the entertaining style in which it is written. It is loaded with anecdotes about Paul Erlich and Julian Simon, who made the bet that is the centerpiece of the story, and the people around them that populated the political landscape. For example, I loved the description of Jimmy Carter's White House maintenance staff, nicknamed the "thermostat police," visiting people's offices to make sure they hadn't reset the thermostats, and of President Carter sweating through cabinet meetings to set an example for the rest of the country. This kind of amusing story gives the rather serious topic a lighter side, too.

Excellent book comparing ideas and people
By sien
The Bet (2013) by Paul Sabin is a really fine book that looks at the different beliefs of the ecologist and author of The Population Bomb Paul Ehrlich and the economist Julian Simon and their famous bet on the price of natural resources.
Sabin is an academic at Yale who teaches environmental history. He introduces the book by describing his own environmentalism which is a very honest and clear way of clarifying his own biases.
The book then looks at Paul Ehrlich’s rise to fame as a prophet of doom. Ehrlich’s childhood, career as a butterfly biologist and his rise a ecological activist is catalogued. Ehrlich’s book ‘The Population Bomb’ and his series of dire predictions and rise to fame in the 1960s and 1970s is described with insight.
Sabin then looks at Julian Simon’s childhood and career. Interestingly both Simon and Ehrlich grew up in suburban New Jersey to upwardly mobile Jewish parents. Simon went to Harvard then obtained an MBA and then a PhD at the University of Chicago. Simon initially worked on using marketing to reduce population growth but then investigated the assumption that increased population was a problem and came to the opposite conclusion.
Next the rise of environmentalism in the 1970s is described. The creation of the Environmental Protection Agency by Richard Nixon and the passage of various other laws and the rise of Jimmy Carter and his own environmental beliefs along with the oil crisis are discussed.
The book then gets to the famous bet between Simon and Ehrlich where Simon challenged Ehrlich to pick 5 metals that he thought would rise over the next decade. Ehrlich comprehensively lost the bet after declaring that taking up the bet would be easily getting free money. The Reagan presidency and Reagan ‘s scepticism of the benefits of further environmental regulation is summarised.
Sabin also points out that while the general thrust of the Carter was toward environmentalism and Reagan toward the market that Carter deregulated the energy industry substantially and Reagan signed on to the Montreal Protocol to reduce CFCs.
Then the increasing polarization of environmental debates between pro-market optimists and environmental catastrophists is nicely described. The contribution of Bjorn Lomborg in fact checking the debate, coming out generally on Simon’s side and then being demonised by environmentalists is added to the discussion. Despite being substantially wrong Ehrlich was far more successful in winning prizes and notoriety than Simon.
Sabin concludes the book by praising the contributions of both Ehrlich and Simon while pointing out that Ehrlich was categorically wrong. He credits Ehrlich with allowing increasing environmental regulations to be passed while crediting Simon with pointing out that the price mechanism and human ingenuity have shown Malthusians to be wrong for the past 200 years. Sabin would like to see more of a fusion between the two positions.
It’s an excellent book that both environmentalists and others will enjoy and get a lot from. Sabin has done an excellent job in writing a very readable, interesting book.

Betting on our planet
By David
This book is about a small bet on a big topic. In practice, the bet between Julian Simon and Paul Ehrlich was about the prices of a basket of commodities. But the bet was really about the relationship between humankind and earth: were humans making their planet unlivable? Ehrlich, best known as the author of "The Population Bomb" thought that higher commodity prices would be a sign of increasing strains on natural resources, and proof of the growing precariousness of human existence. The economist Simon, on the other hand, but his money on technological innovation - even if commodities became scarcer, new techniques and technologies would lead to adjustments and demands and prices.

Sabin's book is well-written, making this dramatic and important subject easy reading. He appreciates both the big picture - what was really at stake in this bet - and the small details about the two bettors and how they came to make that wager.

It's a great book for students and teachers, for environmentalists and economists, and for anyone interested in the fate of human life on earth.

Westward the Course of Empire (Yale University Art Gallery), by Mark Ruwedel

Mark Ruwedel (b. 1954) has photographed the American West for the past twenty-five years, revealing the narratives—both geological and human—contained within the landscape. This stunning book presents more than 70 prints from Ruwedel’s ongoing series Westward the Course of Empire, an inventory of the residual landforms created by the scores of railroads built in the American and Canadian West since 1869.

The grades, cuts, tunnels, and trestles depicted in Ruwedel’s photographs speak to a past triumph of technology over what was often perceived as hostile terrain, as well as to the desire and struggle to create wealth and power from the land. Long abandoned (and in some cases never completed), the railroads also evoke the futility of the enterprise. This book is thus a sublime yet restrained elegy to the land and to the follies and wonders of human ambition.

Review
"The beautiful, oversized, full-page views made by Ruwedel's large-format camera are reminiscent of the work of Carleton Watkins and Eadweard Muybridge. This is a very attractive book on a subject ("ghost" railroads) that is ignored by all but the best railway historians, like David Myrick; and, even then, not usually from an aesthetic point of view."—Richard H. Dillon, The California Territorial Quarterly (Richard H. Dillon The California Territorial Quarterly)

photographs of quiet beauty
By Susan Lockrey
This is an absolutely beautiful photographic monograph. Exploring a theme that evokes a deeply melancholic grace, Ruwedel has compiled a body of work that is all the stronger for its unostentatious modesty. The printing and binding quality are both exemplary. I found this photobook immensely moving.

Big, Heavy & Beautiful
By Thomas Hobbs
This is a large & heavy book that is a gorgeous object. Meridian's tri-tone separations are stunning. It's all maybe a little over the top, but don't let that stop you from buying it. The work is conceptually very strong and well-served by such a lusciously produced book
