Fantastic!

A catalogue of Classic Period maya ceramics exhibited at Princeton in 2012. The book presents the most recent analysis of ceramics from both an archaeological & art historical perspective. By focusing on the pottery from Motul de San Jose, Brian Just examines the organization of the Maya court from a holistic perspective. It is not, however, a introductory survey about the Maya civilization. Some background knowledge is assumed & required to appreciate the nuances. The book is a major contribution to the field of Maya studies and makes one long to see the exhibit.

A Beauty of a Book That's More for the Experts

This book served as a guide for a recent exhibit of Maya Vases. The text is quite scholarly and probably goes way beyond the layman's interest and/or understanding. The photos of the vases are numerous and beautiful, although it is my opinion that they should have had Justin Kerr do the photos with his famous rollout technique. Too often it takes 3 to 4 photos to show the entire scene on the vases in this book. The rollout technique would have really enhanced the ability to view the images.

The text is really in depth, concentrating more on the glyphs associated with the vases than on interpreting the images. In many instances, we can now read the name of the artists who made the vases and who they were made for, but the lay reader is going to find this way beyond his/her interest.

I'm glad I bought the book as it shows many vases I've not previously seen, but I have to admit the text is a bit more than I can handle.

This Will Change Your View of Mayan Ceramics

This excellent book discusses Mayan ceramic art from the ancient site named Motul de San Jose and presents many photos of said art works, both in the round and flat. The book is about the production, distribution and uses of such art, and it goes into these subjects in depth and quite intelligently. The authors discuss technical aspects of slip painting and use of space on the ceramic pieces. They talk about various pigments used in the painting of the ceramics. They compare the different pieces with each other to see what can be learned about each piece from comparing and contrasting it with its peers. They talk at several points about art pieces that were properly excavated by archaeologists vs. pieces that were excavated by art thieves, and what is lost when art thieves do excavation. They translate the glyphs on the ceramics and discuss what these translations tell us about the artists who made them and the patrons who financed them. In short, this book is a detailed look at ceramic art from this accomplished production center, and it approaches the subject from many angles.

I enjoyed this book, but it's not written for beginners. It assumes a bit of familiarity on the part of the reader with Mayan civilization and ceramic art. I think you could still read it and get a lot out of it if you didn't have this background, but it would be a much harder slog. This book is for intermediate to advanced readers of Mayan civilization who have some background in Mayan ceramics. If you've read Dorie Reents-Budet's book *Painting the Maya Universe*, you're ready for this book. There are a number of references herein to various controversies currently raging in the area of Maya ceramic art that will not be of much interest to most people, and I skipped over these whenever I came to them. Overall, however, I was delighted with this book and thought it was a solid entry. I think *Painting the Maya Universe* was meatier, though, and thus I have given this book four stars.

This is really a 4 star book; certainly it is if you coollect this particular form of Korean Pottery

This book roughly 9" x 11" in approx. 160 pps, printed and bound in Spain, issued in conjunction with a museum exhibit in the United States is somethang that you would like to own, perhaps especially if you appreciate Korean pottery.
Korean pottery, where it shines it shines profoundly. When it is great, there is a certain something that is so essential and honest and free that no amount of descriptive gauze can obscure its patent genius.

This book focuses on what it calls Buncheong Ceramics. This is, evidently, a recently coined academic nomenclature meant to distinguish it from Korea's more famous Celadons and lesser known Porcelains. The genre is stoneware characterized by its white slip glazes and inlaid designs; however, there are porcelain and other ceramic wares that fall under the buncheong rubric, presumably do to the techniques and slip materials used to produce them.
This book lucidly discusses the genre, sets it within its historical context, traces its material evolution and physical migration up through time to the present day.

I'm a book collector who is primarily interested in owning well-made books containing high quality reproductions. This book is both well-made and contains high quality reproductions so I'm very pleased with it on that score.
A new trend in books seems to be using a matte finish similar to art books from the 1950's and 1960's (but with much higher resolution). I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the genre, but I must say that the illustrations in this tome approach the mouth watering deliciousness of the high gloss book jacket. In fact, it makes me happy just to look at the front cover of this book. It would have been a potentially historica even if the leaves of this book had been as spectacularly reproduced, alas.

My biggest gripe is with the size of the font and its type: tiny and punk. I don't know if the editors were trying to be cute by using 'corporate S BQ family' font but it really is really horrible. In addition, they chose to use a teeny, tiny nearly unreadable size (9 point?) so that it is an unpleasant exercise to read any of the accompanying text.
In fact, this book is pretty much unreadable, as such.

One of the unique and great things about this book is that a "Checklist of Objects in the Exhibition" is included in the bibliography. This consists of approx. 2" x 2" B&W illustrations of the objects on their sides. This is a unique perspective that I personally have never encountered in a formal publication and I love it.

This is a book may be worth owning if your interests lie in Eastern ceramics. For those who collect Korean, and Japanese pottery this is a good acquisition even though it isn't a five star publication. The cover art alone is nearly worth the purchase and there is a handful of images inside that will have you guffawing in your pleasure to behold.

The author argues, however, that in more contemporary fiction, motifs and modes of fiction with Gothic associations, such as the witch, the vampire, the spectral visitor and the Gothic thriller, have been appropriated by writers adopting a lesbian viewpoint to articulate the transgressive aspect of lesbian sexuality and existence. Writers whose texts receive discussion include Rebecca Brown, Pat Califia, Emma Donoghue, Katherine V. Forrest, Ellen Galford, Sarah Schulman, Mary Wings and Jeanette Winterson. Included are such topics as the production of lesbian subjectivity and sexuality; relations between women; women's complex relationship with history and "the lesbian past"; the performative aspect of role and identity; and the construction of alternative familial groups and formations.

For photographer Paul Strand, painter Marsden Hartley, sculptor Gaston Lachaise, and others, it was a way to escape market-driven, competitive, and divisive New York City, and celebrate a new kind of American Modernism.

In this beautifully illustrated book, Libby Bischof and Susan Danly explore the state's important place in the history of modern art and show how summers in Seguinland inspired a new classicism that merged the antique with the modern. Maine --The Artists' Quiet Escape from New York

Kind of disappointing because it doesn't do a great job of linking Maine to the work that NYC artists did. They had a good time, hung out, ate nice dinners, chatted but it still sounds as if the core of their artistic development was back in New York. So they got a break from Stieglitz -- was Maine good for the artists who summered there, or just a breather? The book does not that the market was back in NYC. Living in Door County, Wisconsin, which plays a vaguely similar role to Chicago, I had looked forward to some deeper insights. Perhaps there aren't any -- it was a pleasurable summer escape and some decent landscapes and B&W nature closeups came out of it.

In 1957–58, after he moved to New York’s Lower East Side, Claes Oldenburg (b. 1929) began making collages he has described as “mostly done in an uncontrolled and intuitive dream mode.” Made from found, printed imagery, the Strange Eggs are enigmatic, surrealistic, and vastly different from the Pop art of the 1960s for which he soon became famous.

These collages are characterized by self-contained forms, or "eggs," the artist made by melding cut fragments of photographic illustrations. While many of the pieces are unrecognizable, some original references are discernible: a piece of pie, the hind leg of a horse, the creased skin of a clenched fist, and the texture of concrete. These eighteen collages were first shown at the Menil Collection in 2012, and they are being published together for the first time, along with poems that the artist wrote at the same time based on found imagery from his walks around New York's Lower East Side. Anticipating second-generation New York School art-poetry collaborations by half a decade, Strange Eggs makes an important single-artist contribution to our understanding of the period.
