The Duke of Alba, by Henry Kamen

Ferdinand Alvarez de Toledo, the third duke of Alba (1507-1582), is known to history as "the butcher of Flanders." The general who carried out Philip II's repressive policies in the Netherlands, he was responsible for the massacre of thousands of men, women and children, considering it better to lay waste an entire country than leave it in the hands of heretics. Alba came to represent for contemporaries as well as for future generations the unacceptable face of Spanish imperialism. In this intriguing re-evaluation, Henry Kamen narrates the duke's personal history, looking beyond the conventional image to reveal motives and to explain rather than simply to condemn. Kamen examines the early years of Alba's life, his travels over the whole of Europe, and the complex military and political career that made him Spain's leading general of the imperial age. Drawing on the duke's rich and expressive surviving correspondence, Kamen explores Alba's beliefs and considers his infamous actions within the contexts of his time and of the monarchs-Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of Spain-whom he served.

Alba - a political biography
By Nikolai G.
Perhaps the most Castilian subject of the most Spanish of the Kings of Spain, Philip II, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, III Duke of Alba had until recently remained controversial in the eyes of the public, an iconic figure representing vividly Spanish imperialism, cruelty arrogance and all those other characteristics which constitute La Leyenda Negra.

A few years after William S. Maltby penned his superb biography of the Duke (William S. Maltby, . Berkeley: University of California Press, 1983), Henry Kamen makes another attempt to uncover the man behind the myth, and shed light on Alba's personality as a man and a statesman, on his ideas, views on faith, politics and people, all those things which define one's perception of the world and are the root of the choices one makes. Kamen tries to keep his usual spirit of anti-Castilianism under control, and focuses more on the controversy surrounding his hero, ably recreating the political situation in which Alba's ideology was constantly formed throughout his life. He succeeds in demonstrating the Duke's strengths and weaknesses, connecting ably Alba's mistaken vision of government as applied to the Netherlands during his governorship there, with the spread of popular dissent in the region, and the transformation of a political game of the local élite into a popular revolt.

Where Kamen misses his mark, is warfare. One has the sense that the author doesn't fully comprehend the changes in the ways war was now waged, which is an important downside when the subject of your research is primarily a military figure, and one who was considered the greatest general in the Spanish realms by friend and foe. It becomes obvious in several places during the narration, that Kamen decided to focus in his research more on politics and less on military matters, and that he did not utilize, even if he did read, all the various commentaries and 'discursos' on military matters the Duke produced, which often leads him to misconceptions about warfare and tactics in context of what is called "the school of Alba", and to gross mistakes, like, f.e. the assertion that Alba preferred German mercenaries to native Spanish soldiers. Although dealing relatively well with some aspects of Alba's strategical approach (f.e. terror as a weapon), Kamen seems to often downplay the significance of the use of special operations and of Fabian tactics, in which Alba was masterful, to the effect that when one finishes his book, one is perplexed as to why the Duke was held in such high esteem for his military capabilities at all.

In all this book is a well-researched biography of the Duke, which should be read in conjunction with Parker's and (for the treatment of the military aspect) the first part of F. González de León's excellent study (Leiden & Boston: Brill, 2009).

The earlier biography of the Duke by William Maltby remains however the most complete treatment of the subject, and a much more enjoyable read.

Basic Bio
By Glenn D. Robinson
Mr. Kamen stated up front that this volume is a basic bio for the general reader and not the indepth one for scholars. For this, he did an excellent job and giving a very good write up of The Duke of Alba. Best known for his manical treatment of the Dutch, he is also known within Spain for his loyalty and devotion to the Monarch. He and his son brutlaized and murdered many thousands of Dutch in the 1560-1570's in the quest to maintain loyal ties to the Spanish Monarch and to block out Protestantism. He clearly failed. A very good book for the basics on the Duke.

Another point of view
By Eric Mascarin Perigault
In 1566 the Protestants of the Netherlands decided to secede from Spain. Philip II sent the Duke of Alba to restore order. The repression was brutal. But it was useless. El Duque has been considered since a brutal one. This biography is about changing the image man, placing it in the context as a faithful servant of kings. It is another point of view, different known, the usual. You see the character from another perspective. It is taking and the circumstances. Interesting.

Reason, Faith, and Revolution: Reflections on the God Debate (The Terry Lectures Series), by Terry Eagleton

Terry Eagleton’s witty and polemical Reason, Faith, and Revolution is bound to cause a stir among scientists, theologians, people of faith and people of no faith, as well as general readers eager to understand the God Debate. On the one hand, Eagleton demolishes what he calls the “superstitious” view of God held by most atheists and agnostics and offers in its place a revolutionary account of the Christian Gospel. On the other hand, he launches a stinging assault on the betrayal of this revolution by institutional Christianity.

There is little joy here, then, either for the anti-God brigade—Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens in particular—nor for many conventional believers. Instead, Eagleton offers his own vibrant account of religion and politics in a book that ranges from the Holy Spirit to the recent history of the Middle East, from Thomas Aquinas to the Twin Towers.

*Starred Review* Takes one to know one, they say, and Eagleton knows one of the new atheism’s dynamic duo, Christopher Hitchens, rather well, for in Hitchens’ socialist days, Eagleton was a comrade. Still a Marxist and, hence, an atheist, Eagleton scores Hitchens along with his biologist sidekick, Richard Dawkins (sometimes as the composite new atheist “Ditchkins”), for unconscionably misrepresenting theology generally and Christianity, in particular, and for adhering to the shallow liberal belief in progress. He does so from a perspective he says is Marxist but that resembles the classical Greek tragic view that human actions inevitably have both good and bad effects. Thus the Enlightenment, seedbed of modern atheism, the liberal state, and economic individualism—virtually all that is progressive—“has always been its own worst enemy.” Far better the communitarian, sometimes communal ethic, which Eagleton sees as the orthodox kernel of Christianity and says Ditchkins ignores, than the surveillance state, wars for corporate profit, degenerate entertainment, and managed news that “progress” has brought us. Eagleton is that rarity, a non-ideological Marxist with a keen understanding of and sympathy for the human condition, not to mention an informed as well as sharp sense of humor. Serious Christians may be his most appreciative readers. --Ray Olson

Review
"Eagleton...is a powerful and engaging writer, perhaps no more so than when, with bursts of comic vituperation which recall Kenneth Tynan at his best, he is seeing off those he regards as second-rate opponents. But probably more relevant is the sense among many readers and critics that Eagleton is providing a welcome antidote to the rather simple-minded conception of religion that Dawkins and Hitchens selected for their demolition jobs. He is rather like a wise old schoolmaster explaining to two eager young students that the significance of "Hamlet" is hardly exhausted by describing it as 'a revenge drama'."--Laurie Taylor, "New Humanist Magazine"

Ditchkins?
By Santi Tafarella
Literary critic Terry Eagleton, who is, insofar as I can tell, an atheist himself, nevertheless engages in a nuanced take-down of some of the pretenses associated with contemporary atheism. And he focuses in particular on the two most articulate writers within the neo-atheist movement---Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. For purposes of convenience (since Dawkins and Hitchens, in numerous instances, offer similar arguments) Eagleton amusingly conflates their names into a singular entity that he calls "Ditchkins."

Eagleton sees the neo-atheist movement as a reaction to the resurgence of Islamic and Christian fundamentalism after 9-11, and he sees that reaction as largely obtuse, both intellectually and psychologically. Eagleton, for example, sees real value in the Bible, and in the story of Jesus in particular, and what it can teach us about life and social change. Eagleton's readings of the Ten Commandments and the story of Jesus were especially dazzling, and illustrated his point that one needn't throw the religious/mythic babies out with the fundamentalist bathwater.

Eagleton is also an unreconstructed Marxist, which I think is a rather dubious intellectual position itself. Nevertheless, it gives him a vantage for making sharp and astute critiques of Ditchkins's complacency with regard to the role that capitalism and Modernism have played in creating a world of religious fundamentalist reactionaries. Eagleton sees fundamentalism as the West's psychological shadow---and points us to Euripides's Bakkhai as a play we would do well to study. In that play, King Pentheus treats Dionysus, who inhabits the borders of his realm, with enormous arrogance and without self-critical awareness, and the result is his own destruction. In this part of the book, Eagleton is rehashing material that he dealt with in more detail in a previous book ("Holy Terror").

Eagleton's book is strongest in its first half. The first chapter was especially thought provoking, for in it Eagleton offered a brilliant aesthetic defense of God's existence that could (almost) make me a believer. Eagleton's argument is a reversal of Liebnitz-like utility, in which God must do everything perfectly---and this must be "the best of all possible worlds." To the contrary, Eagleton suggests that God may have made the universe for a very different purpose. The universe may be (if we are to attribute it to God) a contingent art project, utterly inefficient and without utility---an act of freedom, not necessity. This, of course, has its own problems, but Eagleton has offered a clever retort to traditional theodicy.

Why did Eagleton write this book? If I may engage in a bit of armchair psychoanalysis, I think it is because Eagleton perceives the universal acid of reductionist rationalism heading his way. It's coming after religion now, but it's coming after poetry, literature, and Marxism later. In other words, Eagleton's book is, at one level at least, a battle against an obtuse utilitarianism which sees the price of everything and the value of nothing. I saw Eagleton's (perhaps unconscious) motive leaping from page 34 of his book, in which he wrote: "That a great deal of [religion] is indeed repulsive . . . is not a bone of contention between us. But I speak here partly in defense of my own forebears, against the charge that the creed to which they dedicated their lives is worthless and void."

In some sense, this book is Eagleton (as a Marxist critic) fighting for his own life---defending the importance of nuance and measured judgment against the crassest forms of reductionist cynicism---and making a case for the value of some form of hope for POETIC JUSTICE in the future.

dissing the "ditchkins"
By Daniel B. Clendenin
The atheists Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens have suffered their share of critical reviews, but perhaps none have been as categorical or vociferous as this one from their fellow Brit Terry Eagleton. By some accounts, Eagleton is the most influential literary critic in Britain; by all accounts he is an unreformed intellectual bad boy, and not only for his Marxist socialism. In the present volume he combines his rapier wit, encyclopedic knowledge, and spirited prose to dismiss the "Ditchkins" as pitiful pikers whose ramblings deserve our disdain.

True, the "Ditchkins" make some good points. But their sloppy thinking, strident language, and dogmatic condescension are warning signs of an atheism bought "on the cheap." Their stock in trade includes vulgar caricatures of religion, an "abysmally crude [and] infantile version of what theology has traditionally maintained," ignorance, cultural supremacism, an "eminently suburban" love affair with the Enlightenment myth of liberal progress, the refusal to acknowledge that religion has done any good anywhere or that science has done any harm, and an either/or mentality that ignores ambiguity. They are defenders of the political status quo, and hardly the revolutionaries they purport to be.

Eagleton was raised as an Irish Roman Catholic in working-class England, and although he has been ambiguous about his own personal faith, he says that one reason he wrote this polemic was to defend the faith of his forbears as something worthy of a defense. Christendom has betrayed the truly revolutionary nature of original Christianity, he says, and so in addition to attacking the secular left he undertakes the Kierkegaardian task of distinguishing between the genuine article and its many counterfeits. The revolutionary gospel does not conform to the geo-political and economic ways of the world and, in the end, "is absurdly, outrageously more hopeful than liberal rationalism" and its myth of progress. "Any preaching of the Gospel which fails to constitute a scandal and affront to the political state is in my view effectively worthless."

Along the way, Eagleton has harsh words for capitalism, which he considers inherently atheistic (as did Karl Barth), postmodernism, Oxford High Table, globalization, the corridors of power in Washington and London, and western civilization's failure to understand and engage Islam in a meaningful way. If you enjoy unapologetic iconoclasm of the highest order, Eagleton makes for a good read. In addition to his forty books, he's scheduled to deliver a single Gifford Lecture in March 2010.

A fascinating read if something has been troubling you about Dawkins and Hitchens
By Tommy M.
It's astonishing how many people have reviewed this book thinking that's it's a defense of religion, when Eagleton himself is atheist, or agnostic at best. It indicates that not all of us are reading this book as closely as perhaps we should be. Clearly, quite a few of us are predisposed to take offense on behalf of Dawkins and Hitchens, every time Eagleton flourishes his dry British wit. But this is how the British debate: witheringly and dramatically.

I'm glad someone is pointing out that Dawkins leaps gleefully into a chasm of hypocrisy by attacking religion's crimes (which are many) while obtusely dismissing how science has enabled us to wreak havoc on one another. Eagleton romps from one end of the book to the other, slaughtering sacred cows, and is clearly enjoying himself.

Again, I don't claim to be an expert on textual analysis, but I'm seeing a lot of misfires in the reviews section here. It's a very nuanced style, and sometimes you have to slow down quite a bit to grasp what he's saying. For example, there is not, in fact, any indication that Eagleton thinks Hitchens is a closet Marxist. If anything, Eagleton repeatedly confirms the man's strident and misbegotten *fascism*. Which dovetails into his argument about how Enlightenment values can end up producing the opposite of the intended effect.

Then there's the matter of taking seriously such cast-off, joking comments such as the one he makes about the phases of the moon. For some reason, people are latching on to this as a confirmation of some character flaw. They are elevating it beyond the confines of the statement; erasing the ambiguous humor from the page because a certain interpretation allows them to dismiss more serious statements elsewhere. That's intellectually dissonant.

Basically, the message of the book is this: Dawkins and Hitchens see the debate on religion and secularism in overly broad terms, and their underlying worldview has an inherently *mystical* bias (such as blind faith in the Path of Progress).

You may not agree with it, but I don't see many people on these pages disagreeing with what Eagleton is actually saying. Many of them don't even seem to understand his personal religious disposition. In essence, they're proving his point about obtuse cognitive tunnel vision.

The American Play: 1787-2000, by Marc Robinson

In this brilliant study, Marc Robinson explores more than two hundred years of plays, styles, and stagings of American theater. Mapping the changing cultural landscape from the late eighteenth century to the start of the twenty-first, he explores how theater has—and has not—changed and offers close readings of plays by O’Neill, Stein, Wilder, Miller, and Albee, as well as by important but perhaps lesser known dramatists such as Wallace Stevens, Jean Toomer, Djuna Barnes, and many others. Robinson reads each work in an ambitiously interdisciplinary context, linking advances in theater to developments in American literature, dance, and visual art.

The author is particularly attentive to the continuities in American drama, and expertly teases out recurring themes, such as the significance of visuality. He avoids neatly categorizing nineteenth- and twentieth-century plays and depicts a theater more restive and mercurial than has been recognized before. Robinson proves both a fascinating and thought-provoking critic and a spirited guide to the history of American drama.

Caesar's Druids: An Ancient Priesthood, by Miranda Aldhouse-Green

Ancient chroniclers, including Julius Caesar himself, made the Druids and their sacred rituals infamous throughout the Western world. But in fact, as Miranda Aldhouse-Green shows in this fascinating book, the Druids’ day-to-day lives were far less lurid and much more significant. Exploring the various roles that Druids played in British and Gallic society during the first centuries B.C. and A.D.—not just as priests but as judges, healers, scientists, and power brokers—Aldhouse-Green argues that they were a highly complex, intellectual, and sophisticated group whose influence transcended religion and reached into the realms of secular power and politics. With deep analysis, fresh interpretations, and critical discussions, she gives the Druids a voice that resonates in our own time.

Archaeological Druidism
By Diotima
With a bibliography of several hundred learned journal articles and books, many in French,German, etc, and well over 1000 end notes to these sources, this is a book for the serious student. The 13 chapters, divided and sub-headed into maybe 200 sections, include major topics such as the question of barbarism or savagery, priests and power, sacrifice, oracles and shamans, calendars, sacred grounds, the tool kit, doctrine, gender, rebellion against Rome, and the rather nebulous, even dubious, survival of these various ancient and early medieval ways into our own times.

The author is Professor of Archaeology at Cardiff University,Wales.

I would have liked to have seen more speculation as to the mental world, such as comparisons with Greco-Roman or Germanic ideas about nature. It was nice to read about the very sacred Tara site in Ireland; and to read all the various Roman source quotes, which actually show how little has come down to us in writing. Caesar's writings about his wars in Gaul[="France"]are central among the Roman sources

However archaeology alone just can't animate a corpse's world view except in a very materialistic fashion. So I miss the poetry. Even a brief on proto-Indo-European[linguistic]"culture" would have been welcome. Also unconsidered were the recent genetic findings about, for example, the ancientness of the British genealogy:The dominance of Celtic & "pre-Celtic[Iberian]" ancestry.

No serious student of ancient and early medieval west European Druidism should overlook this book. The discussions of regional and temporal variations in "Druidness" are particularly educational,as are the arguments against scholars who doubt the religiousness of the druids--e.g. Nora Chadwick who considers them to be "philosophers". However,if you want much "religion"/philosophy this is not the place to find it--admitting that such information is actually largely unavailable.

Informative and Educational
By Mary Maxwell-watson
I have many (read: many, many) books on druids and Green delivers again in her own, unique readable and intellectual style. There was no downtime with this book. It reads as easily as a novel, yet delivers accurate and detailed information regarding the subject. There is limited speculation in this book and for that reason alone, anyone interested in druids should purchase a copy. Well worth the price!

George Romney: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings (The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art), by Alex Kidson

This magnificent catalogue, in three volumes and with nearly 2,000 illustrations, will restore George Romney (1734–1802) to his long-overdue position – with his contemporaries Reynolds and Gainsborough – as a master of 18th-century British portrait painting. The product of impressive and thorough research undertaken over the course of 20 years, Alex Kidson asserts Romney’s status as one of the greatest British painters, whose last catalogue raisonné was published over 100 years ago. In more than 1,800 entries, many supported by new photography, Kidson aims to solve longstanding issues of attribution, distinguishing genuine pictures by Romney from works whose traditional attribution to him can no longer be supported. The author’s insights are guided by rich primary source material on Romney—including account books, ledgers, and sketchbooks—as well as secondary sources such as prints after lost works, newspaper reports and reviews, and writings by Romney’s contemporaries.

Review
“Alex Kidson’s catalogue has many virtues: It corrects erroneous, and reveals hitherto unknown, attributions; it chronicles how commissions were carried out; and it meticulously trawls account books, ledgers, sketchbooks, newspaper reports, reviews, and the writings of Romney’s contemporaries to supply the contemporary background for an oeuvre that spans nearly 2,000 portraits. But it also shows how Romney [brought] an altogether new inventiveness and élan to portraiture.”—Edward Short, Weekly Standard (Edward Short Weekly Standard)

“There is no doubting Kidson’s heroic achievement in producing this catalogue, which has been designed and edited to an exceptionally high standard… By his meticulous research and with his fair-minded assessments Kidson has clearly placed Romney back on his pedestal in the pantheon of great British artists of the eighteenth century.”—Stephen Lloyd, Burlington (Stephen Lloyd Burlington 2016-08-01)

About the Author
Alex Kidson is special projects fellow, Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, and was curator of the 2002 bicentennial exhibition George Romney 1734–1802.

The Roof at the Bottom of the World: Discovering the Transantarctic Mountains, by Edmund Stump

The Transantarctic Mountains are the most remote mountain belt on Earth, an utterly pristine wilderness of ice and rock rising to majestic heights and extending for 1,500 miles. In this book, Edmund Stump is the first to show us this continental-scale mountain system in all its stunning beauty and desolation, and the first to provide a comprehensive, fully illustrated history of the region's discovery and exploration.

The author not only has conducted extensive research in the Transantarctic Mountains during his forty-year career as a geologist but has also systematically photographed the entire region. Selecting the best of the best of his more than 8,000 photographs, he presents nothing less than the first atlas of these mountains. In addition, he examines the original firsthand accounts of the heroic Antarctic explorations of James Clark Ross (who discovered the mountain range in the early 1840s), Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, Richard Byrd, and scientists participating in the International Geophysical Year (1957–1958). From these records, Stump is now able to trace the actual routes of the early explorers with unprecedented accuracy. With maps old and new, stunning photographs never before published, and tales of intrepid explorers, this book takes the armchair traveler on an expedition to the Antarctic wilderness that few have ever seen.

What a surprise! I knew there were mountains in Antarctica, but I had no idea that they were so amazing and magnificent. This book offers a unique perspective. It shows the routes used by Scott, Amundsen and others to explore the continent by tracing on maps and photographs the actual routes they took. The story is engrossing, the mountains are spectacular, and the photography is surreal. This is a beautiful book!

Beyond imagination
By ThirstyBrooks
As I understood the history books, the South Pole was 'conquered' by explorers who climbed up an ice pack over 1,000 feet thick and mushed their way to the pole. There were some mountains in the distance somewhere, and some big mysterious crevasses in the polar ice, but I thought it was mostly a flat empty plain.

The Roof at the Bottom of the World sets the story straight. The polar explorers sailed as far as they could into the Ross Sea to minimize the distance they had to walk to the pole. And when the explorers embarked on their land journey, the first step was to climb the glaciers ...not a flat ice cap. These glaciers are 10 mile wide rivers of ice coming down a steep slope from a mountain range 10,000 feet high. The first leg of the journey is up the icefalls. That's why there are huge crevasses. That's why this is a story about climbing, yet the rock faces are mostly just pretty pictures.

Much of the story describes the detailed routes the early explorers took through the glaciers, the snow conditions, and the geological sampling. While well polished, the story's pace often invites speed reading. But the illustrations help the reader see where the explorers were going, what obstacles they overcame, and the interesting things they found, including the molten lava pool. The Roof at the Bottom of the World isn't just a coffee table book of photos, it provides a carefully detailed history of the pioneers of Antarctica.

This book changed my idea of Antarctic exploration from one of people riding dogsleds to one of maniacs climbing icefalls into a steady 30 MPH wind in the worst imaginable cold. It's enlightening and worthwhile to read, but not everyone would want it as a gift. The Roof at the Bottom of the World is a travel story about a place normal people wouldn't enjoy. I don't need to go there, I'll just read the book.

Shared his journey with the explorers
By BPL
Stump's book focuses on one of Earth's great mountain ranges, the Transantarctic, that form a backbone to the Antarctic continent. He is a geologist who has made 13 expeditions mapping and exploring this range. During that time he took thousands of photographs, the best of which are in this book, and they are stunning. His book is an inventive join of history and his contemporary experience. Stump tells of the exploration of Antarctica and the discovery of the Transantarctic Mountains and blends this with his photographs and personal experiences, thus his memoir complements parts of the history. Detailed accounts are given of the efforts of early twentieth century explorers. Some of these historical exploits are from diaries and appear in print for the first time. Stump's research into history was thorough. Although the majority of the book is his recount of historical events, sidebars in many chapters describe his own experiences in varied situations as he explored the mountains over the decades. Many sidebar scenes have vivid descriptions, and include how he felt in situations, but without dialog. He uses a full narrative style. His novel organization of his book is successful; he has presented a journey of discovery that he shared with history.

Operation Eichmann: Pursuit and Capture (Cassell Military Paperbacks), by Zvi Aharoni, Wilhelm Dietl

Adolf Eichmann, the man responsible for carrying out Hitler's "final solution", escaped to South America at the end of the war. He lived a modest life, under an assumed name, as an Argentinian citizen. But he was not safe from justice. In 1960 the Mossad agent Zvi Aharoni hunted him down, confirmed his identity beyond all doubt, and in a covert and illegal operation smuggled him, drugged to keep him quiet, back to Israel. This great manhunt had all the drama and intrigue of fiction, but it is a true story, retold here by the man who pulled it off, against all odds.
