Jean-Pierre Changeux held the Chair of Cellular Communication at the Collège de France for thirty years, and is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and a foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. A Note on the Dog's Breakfast

A reductionist account to matter of all that civilization spiritually cherishes, with matter further reduced to the 8 lbs of the dog's breakfast we know as our brains (matter in the Timaeus (and Whitehead) may qua matter may itself be an intelligent sort of stuff, here the reduction of value to matter is itself a reduction of a reduction).

Still, a good one of this kind. (But a bad "kind," despite the author's subsequent defensiveness in the wake of just this (here) type of criticism.)

And of course, why become defensive to criticism, given that by the book's own neuronal lights in the first instance this sort of criticism must be only itself an electro-chemical interaction within the same dog's breakfast, criticism which is itself thereby quite devoid of any agent's mindful intention of any critical ideas; to otherwise give a critique either truth or meaning is to feel something unlicensed by the author's own electro-chemical stimulation--unless he wants to have his dog's breakfast and eat it too?

London History Fans Take Note

This book is perfect for the coffee table; yes, it's big, with nice photos and historical maps, sketches, etc. It's also a must for anyone doing research or writing anything involving London. The author provides great info on the history of many (not all, that would probably be 3 volumes) of London's famous "squares"--those fenced and gated green spaces that dot London and helped add to that great city's traffic congestion. These squares were designed with homes surrounding them, many of them originally large mansions but today are very expensive condos or apartments. The green space was advertised to attract buyers desiring fresh air and better scenery, and only homeowners on the square got a key to enter (domestics weren't allowed, except perhaps nannies). The story of each square is presented, along with old maps and other illustrations that help differentiate each square. This is one book I'll hold onto for a long time.

A great read, full of information. A great reference work and one I am using to design on a small scale of course, my own property. If you are at all interested in the great London Squares, don't pass this up.

Based loosely on the lives of nineteenth-century brothers Chang and Eng Bunker (the source of the term “Siamese twins”), The Boys from Siam is the haunting and lyrical story of conjoined twins Pigg and Pegg. In his foreword, Edward Albee writes that the work is “a beautifully realized concentrated universe. It takes big chances along the way . . . and makes us care—really care.”

Like Beckett’s Hamm and Clov, Pigg and Pegg battle with the Beckettian paradox: they are alternately tired of living and scared of dying. But again like Beckett, Connolly uses literate wit and a gift for simple but evocative stage pictures to make his sometimes bleak vision palatable. Essential reading for all gay men.

When I first "came out" I spent quite a bit of money and time buying books about the difficulties of coming out, gay relationships, etc. That was a few years ago. Ian Young's "The Stonewall Experiment" should be required reading for *all* young gay men who are wondering what the gay "community" is and where it has been.
Additionally, every single solitary gay activist, and gay "leader" should read this book. I plan to purchase 20 copies of this book and send one to each member of the board of directors of the Log Cabin Republicans. Any volunteers to do the same for HRC?

Rare among dissident books

The dissident story has been told many times, by many people, but seldom with such grace, compassion, and literary sense. Young is an astute observer of behaviour and culture, and his insights transcend far beyond the HIV/AIDS debate. This is an important work in cultural history and social psychology.
