Sam van Schaik is an expert on the early history of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism. He is based at the British Library in London, where he works for the International Dunhuang Project. He is also the founder of the website www.EarlyTibet.com.

Readable and Relevant

Anyone looking for information on China's claims to Tibet, or what really happened when China invaded, or if the Dalai Lamas really were "god kings" (hardly) will want to read this book. I appreciate that the author has no political axe to grind and simply tells a story drawn from meticulous research. Dalai Lama admirers and detractors alike will find surprises here. And, blessedly, it is so well written I found myself getting completely absorbed in the story as I read.

The story told in this book begins more than a thousand years ago, but the work is NOT so overburdened with historic minutiae that it becomes a slog to read, as so many academic histories are. Even so, the work is genuinely informative. Van Schaik does a masterful job clearly explaining what needs to be explained so that events make sense. Historic figures (including lamas) are portrayed honestly, neither deified nor demonized.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a factual, succinct, and readable history of Tibet.

Excellent and Timely History

I read this book (and several on China) prior to taking a tour of China in June 2012 including a couple of days in Tibet. My rather minimal knowledge of Tibet had been limited to reading the endless Dalai Lama vs. China news stories of the last half century. As noted by reviewer O'Brien, this is a clearly written history and Van Schaik has no political axe to grind.

The history of conflict between the Chinese and Tibetans goes back to the 7th century and has continued on and off ever since. There has also been violent conflict within Tibetan society during their history usually involving Buddhist sects. This can be a little surprising if one has heard nothing but how Buddhism is devoted to finding interior peace. However it is not that much different from Western history - religion, politics and human nature frequently lead to war and intolerance.

My brief time in Lhasa revealed a tense atmosphere and a country undergoing changes - cultural changes forced on them by the Chinese as well as the influence of the modern world. The local tour guide admitted he had to be careful with his statements to us. He did say that tourism, a growing source of income in the area, was much more limited in 2012 than in 2011. This was apparently due to recent "self-immolations" by Tibetan Buddhist monks. The Chinese government limits outside visitors when Tibetan protests are in progress. The military and police, who were prominent throughout China, were more heavily armed in Lhasa.

This is a time of continuing change and conflict in Tibet. The same is true within China and between China and all of its neighbor countries. It is helpful to us on the outside to have an understanding of the history of both China and Tibet. This book is an excellent contribution to that understanding.

Kindle--No pictures -- Maps unreadable

The content of the book looks wonderful. However...

Yale was unable to secure the rights to reproduce the pictures. It would have been nice to know that before I made the purchase. On the Amazon page. (Perhaps I might have seen it in the preview, but I didn't and I haven't checked if it was visible.) And telling you to check the printed version just makes it worse. If I'd had access to the printed version, I wouldn't have bought the electronic version.

Plus the maps are unreadable, at least to my eyes.

I expect better from Yale, a great university press. And Amazon.

Don't believe the title

I found the title to be somewhat misleading. This book is mostly a history of multifamily home ownership in New York City beginning in 1881 with the beginning of cooperative housing and continuing into the 1980's. Other parts of the country, while not ignored, are given a lesser treatment. As a New Yorker who works in the field, I found it extremely interesting, although i have some questions about whether certain parts are completely accurate.. I really don't know how I would feel if I lived somewhere else.

In the flourishing ancient Indian communities of the American Southwest and northwest Mexico, master potters created ceramic arts that are considered among the most accomplished in the world. The symbolic imagery and distinctive local styles of the region are unmistakable—simple volumetric shapes covered with complex, interlocking geometrical designs that are sometimes combined with bold abstract animal, human, and composite figures. Within this shared tradition are clearly identifiable local styles and symbolic vocabularies, and this lavishly illustrated book focuses on one of them: the ceramic works of the Casas Grandes-Paquimé area of northwest Mexico and adjoining parts of New Mexico and Arizona, c. A.D. 1200–1400.

For the first time on a comprehensive scale, expert art historians and an artist-teacher discuss the complex imagery of approximately ninety Casas Grandes vessels with fifty pieces representing other major styles of the Greater Southwest. Superb examples show polychromatic designs of real and mythological animals, together with abstract human figures and remarkably varied geometries, demonstrating the imaginative complexity and exceptional achievement of the Casas Grandes potters. Certain motifs reflect affinities with distant Mesoamerica, yet the authors show that these forms were absorbed into a visual vocabulary that reflected the unique artistic and cosmological outlook of Casas Grandes, within the native Southwestern cultural tradition.

These doctrines depend both upon free expression and the necessity of the kinds of professional judgment that universities exercise when they grant or deny tenure, or that professional journals exercise when they accept or reject submissions.

A wake up call!

This is a well researched book about the serious decline in bird populations due to short sighted abuse of bird habitat and their required food supplies. The 9000 mile red knot migration is dependent on the horseshoe crab population of the Delaware Bay which now is endangered itself due to the reckless manufacture of fertilizer from horseshoe crabs as well as other abuses.

The natural world is full of so many many wondrous things, and the amazing seasonal journeys of the Red Knot from the southern tip of South America along the eastern seaboard of the United States to the high Arctic is surely one of them. These birds and many other shore birds like them travel many, many miles on the wing, often only stopping a few times to refuel as they continue on their journey to their nesting grounds. These travels as well as the intricate connection the Red Knot has with the Horseshoe Crab, whose eggs in May are a prime food source, are chronicled beautiful in this wonderful book by Deborah Cramer. Ms. Cramer is an extremely skilled nature writer and her description of the landscapes, the birds, and the intricate ways the various ecological webs she discusses are intertwined and their inherent fragility should one integral piece be removed made for a wonderful reading experience. Cramer also writes of the various people she encounters in her quest to follow the trail of the Red Knot on it's lengthy migration route, from biologists, native peoples, farmers, birders, and conservationists, all fascinating individuals with a true connection in one way or another to the land and the birds they share it with. It is not all the rapture of nature and the wonderful humans that care about it though. Some very distressing issues are brought to the fore throughout the book, including the practice of the bleeding of Horseshoe Crabs by the bio-pharmaceutical industry (the blood is used to test for biological impurities in various medical products) which as well meaning as it is and critical to the health of every human being who has every received an intravenous injection or even a needle, is also very detrimental to the species and is definitely having an effect on it's population numbers, the increasing use of wind power, which has an impact on birds and other flying wildlife, the loss of beaches and habitat along the east coast, and the effects of global warming on our oceans, both in the rising of the seas and the increased acidity of the ocean ecosystem. With all this bad news, I was still left with hope and wonder after reading this book; hope that we as a species can still understand and appreciate the intricate ways the natural world works and how important it is to protect it as much as we are still able and even help to rebuild some of what has been lost in both habitat and species, and wonder at the incredible tenacity and pluck of these little birds as they struggle to survive in an ever changing ecological landscape. A well written, poignant, at times depressing but overall enlightening and uplifting book which I can wholeheartedly recommend to any nature lover and especially to those interested in birds.
