Well Written, Solid Thesis, With the Added Bonus of a Nice Summary of the Viking Age

Although the main thesis of this book deals with the conversion of Scandinavia from paganism to Christianity around 1000 AD, the author spends much of the book providing background on the Viking Age. Nevertheless, his summary of the history Viking Age which serves as background is well written and easy to read. In some ways, that summary alone makes a book worth reading.

Even though this is an academic book, it's not as dry and plodding as academic works often are. The author is not only a skilled historian but a good writer.

As for the author's thesis, it seems well supported and makes a lot of sense. Basically, the decision by Scandinavia to convert to Christianity was more a political decision than a religious one. Previously, it was thought the conversion resulted primarily from missionary efforts. Instead, the author sees Scandinavian kings as converting to increase their own political capital and alliances. This may be true, but it seems the author fails to consider the possibility multiple motivations and factors were at play. People are complex and make decision based on a number of reasons. It is not like changing your religion is as easy as changing out the carpet. It seems fair to say many Scandinavians had real personal belief in the pagan religion. In the same way, many of them probably had real personal belief in the Chrisitan religon and had actual spiritual conversion. So, I agree with the author to a certain degree but think there was more involved.

Overall a very good read.

Winroth takes a fresh, interdisciplinary approach at reconstructing Scandinavia's conversion to Christianity. The result is an enjoyable read about early medieval Europe and how Scandinavia was Europeanized. Drawing on the research of top historians, archaeologists, and other medievalists, this book is a great resource for anyone interested in the Viking Age and early medieval Europe in general.

Excellent historical contextualization of Christianization

The book is aimed at about the level of an intelligent college student or grad. That is to say, it's not the kind of hard-core original research that Winroth's first book on Gratian was, which only another PhD would want, or be able, to read; but it's not your average entertaining beach reading either. With that understood, in a sense there isn't a lot that's very new here; Viking raids, Scandinavian society, gift-giving, and religious change in early medieval Scandinavia have all been studied before, many times over. Winroth draws on this scholarship more than he adds to it.

What IS important about this book is that Winroth assembles these various puzzle pieces in a new way, which ends up providing a compelling new interpretation of the reasons for Viking-age Scandinavia's adoption of Christianity in the generations around the year 1000. Previously, one of two interpretations prevailed: either the preaching of bold Christian missionaries like Anskar won over the hearts and minds of the Scandinavians, in defiance of their ancestral religions (hard to believe when one notes how few actual converts appear in texts like the "Life of Anskar"); or else new kings like St. Olav imposed the new faith from the top down, presumably by force or threat. Winroth finds a fresh new interpretation; he argues that the new kings won over supporters with gifts, and that the best gifts were prestigious and exotic. This was the engine that drove the remarkable Viking expansion, both raiding and trading, between 793 and 1066. Christianity, from this perspective, was another kind of "exotic prestige gift." Its god was almighty and universal, compared to the rather provincial traditional deities; its buildings were mighty soaring stone constructions, its ritual elaborate and mystical, its use of literacy nigh-magical. In a sense, Scandinavians imported Christianity to suit their own interests, rather than its being exported to them by the activity of missionaries from the continent. This is a major new paradigm and makes the book a worthwhile read. Meanwhile, because of the sustained effort to put Christianization in its full historical context, the book actually turns out to be an excellent introduction to Viking-age society.

About the Author
Brian Walker organized the first major exhibition of Garry Trudeau’s work, The Doonesbury Retrospective, at the Museum of Cartoon Art in 1983. First and Foremost, An Artist

Fans already know this implicitly, but comic strip creators rarely get the respect they deserve as true artists. Many thanks to Brian Walker for putting together a sparkling gem of art, insight and background on one of the best there has ever been. At last, nerdy art lovers, like this reviewer, are allowed to behold preliminary sketches, original strips and other artful goodies we aren't generally privy to see from Mr. Trudeau. Young Garry's early artwork and art class drawings most certainly reveal a real artist and high caliber "drawer." Whether pencil, ink or paint, this book shows us a very unique, accomplished artist in many disciplines.

The strips behind the scenes man, inking assistant Don Carlton, is also featured. His crisp and elegant inking style is what has helped make the art of Doonesbury jump off the funny pages all these years. Inking the pencil art from faxed copies, of all things, shows the level of artistry involved on his part.

The book also serves as a superb point of reference (eBay here we come) for many of the excellent Doonesbury products produced over the years, many created to benefit literacy programs through "The Great Doonesbury Sellout," among other projects.

Like Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes and sorely too few comic strips, Garry's characters are fully fledged and real. There's something quite spellbinding when an artist arranges a few lines and words just right and the end result provides us with living, breathing friends. What an incredible art form, a comforting and rare gift from a master.

Thanks Garry and Brian for presenting us with an extremely fun, very well designed, 261 page Trudeau treasure trove of info and art.

Down the Doonesbury Road

Brian Walker investigates the way Trudeau's style has changed through the years and what his influences were. This also includes Trudeau's other works, magazines, illustrations, posters and additional products. Trudeau and some of his collaborators comment in the text. This book gives a well rounded look at the creation of the comic and even of the times in which it was created.

The book starts with a biography and family history as well as the start of his career. Original drafts are shown as well as many of the strips through the years, with a sentence or two explaining when the strip was done and what was relevant about it in that time period.
There are as many pictures and illustrations as text analyzing Doonesbury and Trudeau to 2009 and Obama's first White House dialogue strips.

A list of books by Trudeau and other media is included as well as an index.
For Doonesbury fans, those interested in comics or even those who wish to explore the late 20th century this is an worthy of note and well organized and intriguing book.

Great Reference and History

It will take me years to swallow this whole book! It really shows the behind the scenes of making a commercial comic or art. Line drawings for the website, inked art for merchandise, early notebook sketches etc. The information is plentiful and sheds great light on G.B.'s life. His well rounded education, historic family, and personal dedication to develop great art skills is an inspiration. DO NOT SKIP THIS BOOK if you are interested in being a commercial artist.

This two volume catalogue raisonné is a remarkable set, comprehensively covering all of the known art of one of the most influential of modern artists. The detailed scholarship so evident in this work is the result of decades of research by a Beardsley authority. The production of the volumes and slipcase is beautiful, as befits its subject. Very highly recommended.

ESSENTIAL FOR UNDERSTANDING SPIRITUAL-POLITICAL LEADERSHIP

Avant-Garde Politician: Leaders for a New Epoch

This book is a good introduction to one of the great unknowns of leadership, namely what makes a spiritual-political leader and how do she or he function and, in some cases, become a major maker of future history, for better or worse. Leaving aside mythical models, however significant, such as Moses, examples from recent history include Martin Luther King and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Gandhi is a most significant positive example, thanks to his highly moral beliefs, in part based on Indian traditions, such as Satyagraha (insistence on truth), love also for one's enemy and efforts to change them for the better, Ahimsa (compassion and not to injure), and especially Satyagraha ("the need to oppose injustice but to oppose it nonviolently" [p. 203], simplified in the widely used term "passive resistance"). These made him an Indian and in some respects even more so a global spiritual leaders.
Gandhi was also a top political leader of India, formally or by force of his personality, who exerted much influence on the way in which it achieved independence (including the partition between India and Pakistan, which may have been a serious mistake resulting, paradoxically, in a nuclear confrontation which contradicts all that Gandhi believed in). Thus, Gandhi is a prime case of spiritual-political leadership characterized by regarding itself and being widely accepted by followers as having a transcendental basis. This type of leadership is quite different from ideological this-worldly leadership, a distinction underrated by the author who partly compares Gandhi with Churchill, Mao and Stalin (pp. 190-193).
Nearly all the study of leadership neglects spiritual-political leaders as a distinct type of the highest importance. Hence the importance of the book and the insights it provides into the spiritual aspects of Gandhi and their development. In addition to its monographic significance, it can also serve as a good starting line for developing a theory of spiritual-political leadership throughout history. This is all the more urgent because the emerging metamorphosis of humanity, as discussed in my recent book, requires spiritual-political leaders of the highest quality.
Accordingly I strongly recommend this book to all interested in public leadership, in addition to students of India and its history and of Gandhi.

Likewise, plant pathologists had also developed disease management programs incorporating varietal selection and cul­ tural procedures, along with minimal use of the early fungicides, such as Bordeaux mixture. These and other methods were practiced well before modern chemical control technology had developed. Use of chemical pesticides expanded greatly in this century, at first slowly and then, following the launching of DDT as a broadly successful insecticide, with rapidly increasing momentum. In 1979, the President's Council on Environmental Quality reported that production of synthetic organic pesticides had increased from less than half a million pounds in 1951 to about 1.4 billion pounds-or about 3000 times as much-in 1977.

Great New Brewer's Edition

I've read or browsed through every Brewer's edition since #13, and this is an excellent update. Some of Dr. Brewer's original definitions are included (a new feature, everything old is new again), which offers a delightful window into the original text. Brewer's is an excellent reference (What does that name MEAN in Harry Potter? Who was that Tolkien wizard?), but it's also just plain fun to read.

This is most unusual book-pairing thoughtful, poetic essays bracketing a period of several decades with only one photograph- the most personal and deeply felt critical thinking I have read about a milestone 20th century work by a gifted thinker and writer.

I love Landart and De Maria's artwork "The Lightning Field" is one of the best examples. Baker's book is not worthwhile reading! The garrulous San Franciscan put together this preachy rant and utterly ignored the artwork. That is, Baker lets loose with his opinions on life, the world and everything by using a famous artwork created by a Landart genius. With sadness, I cannot reccommend Baker's book on a subject he obviously never ever really communed with.

Also included are examples of Calder's inventory drawings; the boxes he made to store the jewellery; historic photographs of his jewellery worn by notable patrons, art collectors, and artists (for instance, Peggy Guggenheim and Georgia O'Keeffe); and a chronology. Essays by Mark Rosenthal and Jane Adlin discuss the relationship of these objects to the artist's other endeavours and in relation to the history of jewellery.

Unbelievable!!

This book is a must-have. Whether you are a Calder afficionado who has collected (or wanted to collect) his artwork since the 1950s or whether you are a beginning metalsmith who never even heard of Alexander Calder, you will absolutely drool over the photographs in this book. Printed on thick gorgeous paper, every photo is sharp and clear, as though you were holding the jewelry right in your hand. The book is apparently an exhaustive catalogue of all the jewelry that Calder created throughout his life (much of it for his wife), explaining when he made it and where/when it was sold, often including his handwritten notes and drawings. On the other hand, it is a book solely of inspiration--although he eventually got into cutting, soldering and riveting, many of his earlier pieces are just bent and hammered pieces of wire. But, oh, the shapes he was able to make from that wire! If you are any kind of an artist looking at this book, you will think (as I did), "Oh, I could make that!" which leads me to believe that Calder inspired the past 10 decades of the contemporary jewelry movement. You, too, will be inspired by this book!

Lovely book!

The production quality of the book is wonderful. Photos are very high quality, and there are a lot of them. The paper is heavy-duty and will stand up to all the viewings this book will receive in our house.

I didn't know much about Alexander Calder or his jewelry, but enjoyed the discovery of both through this book. My only complaint (if it can be called that) is that it arrived shortly before I needed to take a trip, and the size/weight of the book precluded me bringing it along!

It's a great inspiration to see those pieces.

Anyone who appreciates well-made, original design in jewelry needs to have and read this book. What an inspiration! Although I was familiar with Calder's mobiles, for which he is most renowned, I was even more impressed with his jewelry designs. All one-of-a-kind. A definite must for the coffee table or even to read and enjoy. As a jewelry designer influenced by other cultures, this has been most helpful in inspiring me to follow my instincts and to design the items I've seen in my dreams. What a book!

William B. Jordan is former director of the Meadows Museum, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, where he was also professor of art history and chairman of the Division of Fine Arts of the Meadows School of the Arts. From 1981 to 1990 he was deputy director of the Kimbell Art Museum.

Polyfacetic Monograph, what fun!
Jewel-like colour in the bookplates, abundance of human interest rendered forth in contemporary anecdotes of celebrated and obscure personages; Golden Age poetry in the original Spanish; many pleasing surprises as art phases into politics and from thence into the literary realm.
Everything in Mr Jordan's book is unusual, an aesthetic prism, evoking the aggressively sensual world of stoics, gluttons and libertines-- Spain's royal feast, a peasant's paradigm of picnics, flowers and party favours.
Distinguished and exclusive as the art it describes, Van der Hamen shines!

For the afficionado of Spanish still life, this book is a real treat. The author is so enthusiastic about his subject, it is a pleasure to read as well as to study the beautiful reproductions.
