Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties (Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design &

The technique of applying brilliant enamel ornament to metalwork, known as cloisonné, reached its peak in China from the fourteenth century on. This sumptuously illustrated survey, which accompanies an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center, situates these remarkable pieces in their context with a survey of the historical, political and sociological milieu in China during the period. Research recently undertaken in China and published here for the first time has resulted in the redating of a number of objects with significant implications for the overview of Chinese cloisonné production. Shapes, functions, pattern, and symbolism in cloisonné objects are all examined and explored. And the final section of the book reviews the impact of developments in China on later production in Europe, as well as the acquisition of cloisonné pieces by the major American museums and private collectors at the beginning of the twentieth century.

comprehensive overview of Chinese cloisonne
By Ivor E. Zetler
Cloisonne is an enameling technique which consists of soldering to a metal surface delicate metal strips bent to the outline of a design and filling the resulting cellular spaces, called cloisons (French for partitions or compartments)with vitreous enamel paste. The object is fired, ground smooth, and polished. (Encyclopedia Britannica). This art form was practiced in the Byzantine era and gained prominence in China during the Ming Dynasty (1638-1644)as well as in later years.

This beautifully produced book is a catalog of an exhibition presently being held at the Bard Graduate Center. The first section of this volume supplies a detailed history and a description of Chinese cloisonne production. The last part of the book consists of illustrations and annotations of the 161 beautiful and high quality objects featured in the exhibition. The majority of the cloisonne items are bowls and vessels in various shapes. There are also animals, altar fittings, panels and suchlike. I particularly liked the cute though curious dog kennel! Surprisingly no cloisonne snuff bottles are presented.

As is usual with catalogues associated with the Bard Graduate center, the production values and color reproduction standards are exceptional. I suspect this book might become a collectors item of some value in the future. Warmly recommended for decorative arts enthusiasts.

Twentieth-Century Type, New and Revised Edition, by Lewis Blackwell

An updated and expanded edition of a classic book on 20th-century graphic design. Twentieth-Century Type surveys the significant issues that have shaped the history and evolution of typography and graphic design, showing how current typographic trends are part of a continuously changing movement that can be plotted through the decades. Generously illustrated with over three hundred examples-more than two hundred of which are in color-the book charts significant topics including the arrival of mass-production; the birth of the art director; the appearance of the grid (and its subsequent rejection); the coming of non-print media; and the launch of the Macintosh computer and its ushering in of a new generation of designers enfranchised by digital technology. This revised edition of a fundamental work brings the story up to date with new text and images covering type on screen and, in particular, type for the internet. Combining an assessment of the culture of experimentation in contemporary typographic design alongside a clear presentation of the field's historical context, the book is an informed and accessible source for all students of design and for designers needing an expert overview of typography.

Great Overview of the 20th Century
By meagainstme
This is a great book containing a very good overview of the 20th century changes in typography. It covers everything from pre-art nouveau to postmodernism. A good resource for any design or typography library. My only complaint is that Blackwell waxes a bit too poetic on 1990's postmodernism. Also, they used a tight-fitting Helvetica for the body copy - so reading it takes some effort.

This is certainly worth having in your collection.

What They Do With Your Money: How the Financial System Fails Us and How to Fix It, by Stephen Davis, Jon Lukomnik, David Pitt-Watson

A call to reboot capitalism and preserve $85 trillion in retirement savings for their owners—not for use as the financial industry’s ATM

Each year we pay billions in fees to those who run our financial system. The money comes from our bank accounts, our pensions, our borrowing, and often we aren’t told that the money has been taken. These billions may be justified if the finance industry does a good job, but as this book shows, it too often fails us. Financial institutions regularly place their business interests first, charging for advice that does nothing to improve performance, employing short-term buying strategies that are corrosive to building long-term value, and sometimes even concealing both their practices and their investment strategies from investors.

In their previous prizewinning book, The New Capitalists, the authors demonstrated how ordinary people are working together to demand accountability from even the most powerful corporations. Here they explain how a tyranny of errant expertise, naive regulation, and a misreading of economics combine to impose a huge stealth tax on our savings and our economies. More important, the trio lay out an agenda for curtailing the misalignments that allow the financial industry to profit at our expense. With our financial future at stake, this is a book that analysts, economists, policy makers, and anyone with a retirement nest egg can’t afford to ignore.

Review
“This excellent and well written book exposes the multiple leakages to various agents operating between savers and pensioners and the companies they are invested in as well as the problems of collective industry failure. It does not just make clear the problems and the often perverse incentives in the current system, but with clear “takeaways” after each chapter, the authors propose practical solutions from greater transparency to systemic regulation, with an outline of what a “People’s Pension Plan” and a “Common-Sense Bank” would look like. The book has insights for the individual investor as well as those in the industry interested in making the investment process fairer and more responsible.” -- Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, former chairman of Royal Dutch Shell (Sir Mark Moody-Stuart)

“For those wishing to know what’s right with our financial system and how it can go wrong—or what’s wrong with it and how it can be set right, this is the book for you. Its return to common sense and the basics of finance is refreshing in a world too often characterized by obfuscation and complexity. Clear, concise, sensible, and incontrovertible.” -- Steve Lydenberg, Founder and CEO of The Investment Integration Project (Steve Lydenberg)

"This book brilliantly describes what finance is for and shows how we, the people, who are the ultimate owners, can influence the system to meet our long-term needs."--Dame Barbara Stocking, President, Murray Edwards College, Cambridge (Barbara Stocking)

"Davis, Lukomnik and Pitt-Watson paint a bleak picture of an out-of-control financial system that fails to serve the aspirations of ordinary individuals.  Not content simply to identify the problem, the authors propose creative (principles-based) solutions.  If you care about the role of finance in today’s economy, read this provocative, compelling book." -- David Swensen, Chief Investment Officer, Yale University (David Swensen)

This fine book provides remarkable insights into what has gone wrong in our financial institutions and markets. In its call for action by us--we investors who collectively own corporate America--the authors offer clear and actionable steps that we can take to build a corporate world that serves our own interests, not Wall Street's.--John C. Bogle, founder and former chief, The Vanguard Group (John C. Bogle)

“This is a clear and persuasive analysis of what is wrong with the financial system. The good news is that much of it is fixable, and this excellent book gives a compelling account of how.”—David Walker, Chairman of Winton Capital, former Chairman of Barclays (David Walker)

"As only insiders can, Davis, Lukomnik, and Pitt-Watson shine a spotlight on hidden cracks in the system that can still put hard-earned savings at risk. This is a vital book for anyone concerned about how to make the finance industry generate wealth for all of us.”—Former U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd (Christopher Dodd)

"Uncompromising in its critique and optimistic in its vision, What They Do With Your Money not only addresses the problems in the finance industry but offers practical solutions that can change the world for the better." -- Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (Gordon Brown)

"....the interests of the underlying clients of the finance industry—the depositors, the workers and the pensioners—should come first. Everyone is a capitalist these days. That means keeping a much closer eye on those who manage that capital"—The Economist (The Economist 2016-06-10)

“A new book by three of the best thinkers in financial sustainability . . . does an outstanding job of fusing the public necessity and investor rationale for sustainable investment. . . . The timing of this book is impeccable, and it is required reading.”—Hugh Whelan, ESG Magazine (Hugh Whelan ESG Magazine)

“A thoughtful, meticulously documented, and downright infuriating indictment of the American financial services industry.”—Nell Minow, Huffington Post (Nell Minow Huffington Post)

Easy Read, Packed With Insights and Great Actionable Advice
By JamesMcRitchie
What they do with your money is central to many issues of citizens around the world. This wonderful new book by Stephen Davis, Jon Lukomnik, David Pitt-Watson helps readers connect the dots. While its focus is on the financial system, its purpose is empowering individual citizen investors and those who would be investors if that system were redesigned to serve us all.

Fixing the system won’t be easy. We can’t count on most of those those benefiting from the system to initiate needed changes but the authors provide a roadmap of how needed reforms can be accomplished.

RAND recently asked a representative sample of Americans if they agreed with the statement “people like me don’t have any say about what the government does.” Responses among likely Democratic voters didn’t significantly correlate with support for either Sanders or Clinton. Likewise, there was no correlation with supporters of most Republican candidates… except Donald Trump. People who “somewhat” or “strongly” agreed with the statement were 86% more likely to prefer Trump over other candidates.

“This increased preference for Trump,” RAND explains, “is over and beyond any preferences based on respondent gender, age, race/ethnicity, employment status, educational attainment, household income, attitudes towards Muslims, attitudes towards illegal immigrants, or attitudes towards Hispanics.” Desperate people are willing to take desperate actions, even voting for a megalomaniac. Who knows? Maybe it will work out better than the current situation, they may be thinking... or maybe they aren't thinking at all but just reacting.

Those voting for Brexit may have also agreed they have little say in what the European Union does. What about supporters of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant? A person must feel powerless if they think their best option is to take such drastic measures. Who thinks they have a say over the direction of the financial system and corporate governance? Where are the levers for influencing mutual funds? Alienation might drive a lot of behaviors not explained by self-interest.

What They Do With Your Money examines the financial system from the standpoint of an average person, explains why it isn’t working for us and, most importantly, provides solutions, including a Magna Carta for citizen investors.

We can have a say in how the financial system is operated and whom it serves. Just don’t expect your bank, mutual fund or Congress to take the initiative in making it work for us. The authors of the book aren’t insightful unengaged scholars observing the world from ivory towers. They are highly engaged individual citizens working to set up the institutional framework that will be required for transformation. Buy and read the book. Join us.

First these well qualified experts look as what the financial system is supposed to do, breaking it down into four important functions as follows:

- Safe custody of wealth.
- Convenient payment system
- Intermediation between lenders and borrowers
- Reducing risk, like insurance

Then they discuss the problem of incentives, among other causes of misalignment. Our capitalist system is supposed to be about those with capital deciding who will run our companies. However, we generally have so many intermediaries between investors and company managers, all taking a little slice of our money, that real monitoring goes by the wayside. We may invest a little in our 401(k) plan every month but how many are taking a little slice for administration?

We pay record-keepers to check that our savings are going to the right place; mutual-fund managers and staff; third-party research firms and databases to help managers choose which stocks to buy; another set of advisors to help vote all those proxies; listing platforms so investments in the mutual fund can be bought and sold; brokers who handle the fund’s orders; transfer agents to look after those securities; agents to price them for reporting purposes; on and on and that doesn’t even touch on many of the more obscure aspects of our financial system, such as the fact that mutual fund are buying derivatives, not actual stock. All those small charges add up to reduce pensions of 25% to 40%. Most costs are hidden but the authors lift that veil.

A real eye opener for me is that costs in the finance sector (generally around 1.5% – 2%) are the same as they were when the transcontinental railroad was built. Yes, there have been increases in productivity and efficiencies but those gains have gone to the industry itself, not investors. Financial sector income accounted for 4% of GDP in 1950 but 8% by 2010. While making up only 7% of the economy and creating a mere 4% of all jobs, the financial sector generates more than a fourth of corporate profits. Makers and Takers: The Rise of Finance and the Fall of American Business

Asset managers are typically compensated based on the amount of money they manage, not on how well they do with it. Similarly, loan originators were paid based on the number of loans, not their quality. The misaligned incentive helped bring on the Great Recession.

I am reminded of a discussion I had with a friend’s father back in the early 1960s. As a consultant to Anheuser Busch, he got them to stop paying their sales force based on gallons sold. Instead, they were paid based on dollar volume. It was the birth of popular premium beers in America. How incentives are structured can make all the difference.

The authors of What They Do With Your Money describe how similar disincentives apply to managers of mutual funds and corporations. For example, maximizing near-term share price, rather than intrinsic corporate value, leads to a raft of economic inefficiencies as well as lowered financial returns. It also incentivizes managers to externalize costs off onto the environment and taxpayers.

Similar criticisms are levied at mainstream economics, which assumes away real world complications by treating people as economic robots in order to improve pseudo-precision. In mainstream economics if the model doesn’t fit reality, make reality fit the model. The answer is economics based in real people, accounting for their real values and actual behavior.

Frequent readers of my blog will find much that is familiar. For example, the authors cite many of the same studies, such as that by Gilson and Gordon, "The Agency Costs of Agency Capitalism: Activist Investors and the Revaluation of Governance Rights," which discusses why most mutual fund managers don’t monitor corporate governance. Another important study we cite is "Executive Superstars, Peer Groups and Overcompensation: Cause, Effect and Solution," by Elson and Ferrere, documenting the lack of a robust market for CEOs.

Like me, the authors offer a long list of practical solutions. Most, such as repealing IRS section 162(m), require collective action. Paying cash instead of restricted stock or options may make sense but lazy corporate boards and regulators can interpret a rise in stock value as a performance metric meeting the requirements of 162(m), whereas devising other performance measures to meet those requirements would take a modicum of work. Maybe if more directors were actually nominated by shareholders, they would be willing to put in the time effort and repeal of 162(m) would not be necessary.

A Few of My Favorite Recommendations

- Trust must be built into the financial system by every intermediary assuming fiduciary responsibility, putting client interests before their own.
- Focus on good governance, rather than excessive rules.
- The first step in designing a twenty-first-century retirement plan is a capable, accountable and representative board.
- Give us the names and email addresses of all those intermediaries between us and our investments who are supposedly representing our interests. We want to be able to contact them to ensure they are acting on our behalf.
- Funds should be asking their investors what we want in terms of types of investments (I don't want to invest in coal) or how to vote my proxy (I think most CEOs are paid far too much).
- Social media should focus not only on corporations but the institutional retail investors that own them. (Thanks for the shout out on many useful websites, including meh own as “the granddaddy of social media in corporate governance")
- Joining together with others through social media or an American equivalent of the UK's ShareAction is critical. We can’t transform the financial System on our own. I am hoping the authors will start such an organization. How about you? Are you ready to join? Maybe lead?

I recently contributed a chapter to The Handbook of Board Governance: A Comprehensive Guide for Public, Private, and Not-for-Profit Board Members on "The Individual’s Role in Driving Corporate Governance." Most of that book is aimed at corporate directors, managers and their advisors. However, several chapters, including mine, are relevant to the role of individual investors and how we can take personal responsibility for transforming corporations into more democratic institutions. What The Do With Your Money and The Handbook of Board Governance have areas of overlap but each calls out unique perspectives and actionable solutions. Read both and get involved in putting an end to corporations as democratic-free zones.

One of the best textbooks I've ever had for a history class
By Brandon Scott Pilcher
We used this and Nelson Mandela's Autobiography as our textbooks in my South African History class over at UCSD, and I say it's a great overview of the subject. I have to say the portrait Thompson paints of the area's conquest by Europeans, which took place over several centuries and involved a lot of population displacement and forcing the survivors into segregated reservations or impoverished industrialized servitude, reminded me more of my own USA than the typical late Victorian "Scramble for Africa" invasion. And even though I had originally pictured the British as the most troublesome imperialists in South Africa, the recurring theme in this history is they were commonly the LESSER evil compared to the earlier Dutch colonists (though mind you, this is more of an indictment against the Dutch's extremely vicious inhumanity towards the native Africans than praise for the British).

Unfortunately the paucity of written records and recovered archaeological data for South Africa prior to the European invasions has restricted how much information Thompson can present in his opening chapter, but it was my favorite since I admired his objective and respectful presentation of the various African groups (San, Khoikhoi, and Bantu-speakers). It's a valuable corrective to many of the racist "ooga-booga" stereotypes affecting their image without being opaquely rose-tinted. For example, while Shaka of the Zulu does come across as a brutal conquering warlord, Thompson emphasizes that his extreme genocidal tactics were innovations of his imperialistic agenda rather than perfectly continuous and representative of southern Bantu military traditions. In this light Shaka wasn't so much a stereotypical "savage African despot" but more like an evil military genius in the vein of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, or Genghis Khan.

Excellent Survey; 4.5 Stars
By R. Albin
This is a first-rate survey of South African history. This is the latest edition of a very successful text written by the late Leonard Thompson which has been updated by his collaborator Lynn Berat. Thompson-Berat attempt a comprehensive survey by opening with the basic ecology and prehistory of what is now South Africa, followed by a nice narrative of the early European contacts & colonization. Excellent chapters on the period of Dutch domination, the major changes that occurred with British conquest and the emergence of more powerful native polities such as the Zulu state, the transforming impact of major involvement in the global economy that followed the discovery of diamond and gold deposits, and on through the development of the modern South African state, the apartheid era, and the subsequent transition to the contemporary South Africa dominated by the ANC. Recurrent themes are the aggressive and destructive nature of European colonialism, the major changes brought about by the peneration of the global economy, and the interesting responses of native African societies.

Written well and documented very nicely. My only complaints are the relatively poor quality of the maps and while the bibliography is excellent, an annotated bibliography is always a nice feature in a survey.

this was the best history of South Africa
By Barbara A. Anderson
Even in its earlier edition, this was the best history of South Africa. Integrates the history and perspective of non-Whites (Africans, Coloureds and Asians) more completely than any other work. Since Leonard Thomson's death, an update was sorely needed. The updated version, which brings it forward o recent years fills a real gap.

An exploration of product certification programs and the factors that explain their varied success in becoming global governors equipped to tackle environmental and social problems effectively

Consumers now encounter organic or fair-trade labels on a variety of products, implying such desirable benefits as improved environmental conditions or more equitable market transactions. But what do we know about the origins and development of the organizations behind these labels? Why have some flourished while others faltered? And why are some sectors rich with labeling organizations while others have very few? This book compares the rise and evolution of certification programs in the coffee, fishery, and forest industries to arrive at a model that reveals how market and political conditions, as well as the characteristics of program founders, shape the early character of the governance rules and certification standards that programs adopt.

Review
“This is an important book on the evolution of certification systems, with unparalleled coverage of three key industries and a number of more general implications.  Auld constructs a powerful account of how market conditions and early decisions influence the maturation of certification initiatives, which helps to explain why some fields have seen such a proliferation of eco- and social-labels.”—Tim Bartley, The Ohio State University (Tim Bartley 2013-10-10)

“Simply put, this is the single best comparative project regarding different certification/private governance schemes I have seen. Easily the best.”—Stacy D. VanDeveer, University of New Hampshire (Stacy D. VanDeveer 2013-10-12)

“The broad comparative perspective, achieved in few other analyses of private regulation to date, makes this book a major contribution to the literature.”—Tim Büthe, author of New Global Rulers: The Privatization of Regulation in the World Economy (Tim Buthe 2013-10-19)

“Comparing the evolution of environmental and social certifications, Auld sheds light on the new institutions regulating the coffee in our cups, fish on our plates, and wood in our tables.”—Laura T. Raynolds, Center for Fair & Alternative Trade, Colorado State University (Laura T. Raynolds 2014-06-04)

Won honorable mention for the 2016 Harold and Margaret Sprout Award given by the International Studies Association. (Harold and Margaret Sprout Award International Studies Association 2016-03-21)

The Ten Commandments: A Short History of an Ancient Text, by Michael Coogan

The complex and surprising history of one of the world’s most famous texts

In this lively and provocative book, Michael Coogan guides readers into the ancient past to examine the iconic Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue. How, among all the laws reportedly given on Mount Sinai, did the Ten Commandments become the Ten Commandments? When did that happen? There are several versions of the Decalogue in the Old Testament, so how have different groups determined which is the most authoritative? Why were different versions created?

Coogan discusses the meanings the Ten Commandments had for audiences in biblical times and observes that the form of the ten proscriptions and prohibitions was not fixed—as one would expect since they were purported to have come directly from God—nor were the Commandments always strictly observed. In later times as well, Jews and especially Christians ignored and even rejected some of the prohibitions, although the New Testament clearly acknowledges the special status of the Ten Commandments. Today it is plain that some of the values enshrined in the Decalogue are no longer defensible, such as the ownership of slaves and the labeling of women as men’s property. Yet in line with biblical precedents, the author concludes that while a literal observance of the Ten Commandments is misguided, some of their underlying ideals remain valid in a modern context.

From Booklist
Biblical scholar Coogan seeks to disarm disputes over displaying the Ten Commandments on public property by demonstrating that the document in question is not now nor ever has been graven in stone. There are three versions in the Torah and while two (Ex 19, Dt 5) are quite—but not perfectly—alike, the third (Ex 34) is very different and often called the Ritual Decalogue because it focuses on Jewish temple practices. Moreover, none of the three is pristine because, Coogan argues, there was an older original form that they all approximate. Also, over the ages, particular commandments’ meanings and legal statuses have been subtly or greatly modified by some weighty authorities, indeed, including Jesus. By now, and contrary to what an American Catholic cardinal pronounced, Coogan says, they’re very much “up for grabs” by anyone wrapping himself in the banner of virtue. Coogan concludes this engrossing and enlightening guide to one of world’s great legal codes by discussing how properly to honor the Ten Commandments in the U.S. --Ray Olson

Review
“Devastating. . . . [Coogan] knows the Bible inside out.”—Globe and Mail on God and Sex: What the Bible Really Says, also by Michael Coogan   (Globe and Mail)

"Readers… can trust Coogan, a biblical scholar of the highest order.”—Publishers Weekly on God and Sex: What the Bible Really Says (Publishers Weekly)

“Coogan is interested in the commandments not only as an ancient text but as a living, social one, and enjoys grappling with the issues that surround them today as much as he does providing historical background. Legislators, particularly, should read this book, before they try to mount tablets on the courthouse steps.”—Nicholas Mancuso, The Daily Beast (Nicholas Mancuso The Daily Beast)

“[An] engrossing and enlightening guide.”—Ray Olson, Booklist (Ray Olson Booklist)

"Coogan offers a nice, concise history of the Ten Commandments, in which he shows the development of the text itself, drawing on earlier legal codes which appear to have influenced them. He takes the reader through the code itself, comparing and contrasting the three versions in the OT."—Paul Mueller, Religious Studies Review (Paul Mueller Religious Studies Review 2015-03-01)

From the Author
Michael Coogan on the Ten Commandments:

The Ten Commandments have become a focal point in the culture wars that divide society. Held to be a concise summary of what God wants everyone to do—and mostly not to do—they have been displayed in public spaces to remind all of their supposedly unchangeable message.

But if the Ten Commandments were given directly by God, then why does the Bible have different versions of these supposedly divinely given rules? Why do modern displays abridge and alter them? Why have both Jews and Christians throughout history sometimes ignored and even disobeyed them? Are all of the values these ancient and historically conditioned laws express still valid today?

As a biblical scholar I have been both amused and troubled by how the Ten Commandments have been wrenched from their original context and made into a kind of graven image, not to be examined or challenged. In this book I trace the history of the Ten Commandments from Moses to Cecil B. DeMille and the United States Supreme Court. I do so without presuppositions or dogmatic constraints, paying close attention to what they actually say. Contrary to many pastors and politicians who view the Ten Commandments as a timeless code, I conclude that some of the specific prohibitions and some of the values underlying them are no longer appropriate or acceptable in a modern, pluralistic society. Others, however, enshrine more universal ideals, that should be honored, although not by public display.

The Ten Commandments Yesterday and Today
By Mary Wendell
If you're going to read a book about the Ten Commandments, you want it to be written by a Bible scholar of the highest order like Michael Coogan. In this book he not only discusses the history of the commandments, but the modern application as well by answering questions regarding their relevance, the different versions and interpretations, and their social significance.

The Ten Commandments: A Short History of an Ancient Text is written in a style that is both engaging and easy to understand even if you're not a Bible scholar yourself. Coogan begins his exploration with an anecdote about the 1956 film The Ten Commandments and the lawsuits that ensued as a result of promotional tablet monuments installed on government property. (In the end these displays were deemed legal because they were found to be more historical than religious in nature.) By describing this interesting event, the author succeeds in both drawing readers in and opening up a whole host of questions and discussion topics. Those looking for advanced details on Abraham should follow this text with Abraham in History and Tradition.

Books on Biblical studies can often be dry and technical, but this one hits the mark by mixing up historical analysis with questions that we, today, might be curious about. Like why are there only ten commandments? Which commandments are outdated? Should the commandments still be held in such high regard? Did the people who lived when they were recorded, follow them closely?

Great book for scholars *and average readers!

Superb Biblical Reading Materials without the astute philological markers that illuminate these two pericopes!
By John E.D.P. Malin
Competent scholarship by an indefatigable author. Professor Coogan does not deal with the thesis that these memorial stone stelae stone laws were ordered by Darius the Great: throughout the pax Persica. He established Dat [Old Persian-Aramaic, "law, truth"] as the foundation of his Imperium. Each major city had to erect stone tablet laws for strangers and merchants entering their city to read, so they would not violate any of the city's major rules of law. The time frame is late 6th century, ca. 520s B.C.E. for this extraordinary achievement, Emperor Darius, was given the highest political distinction as conferred by this ancient epithet of the Hebrew-Israelite-Jewish State: "Lover of Yahweh!" [Second Isaiah 48:14] It was then that this pericope was inserted in the ancient scroll of Deuteronomy. It underwent several redactions as the Book itself reveals. Later, it was re-duplicated in the appropriate Exodus passage, with more than a few scribal stylistic variations. These were later harmonized by later scribes to conform to its original parent passage in Deteuronomy. This is the real history of this famous Tablet!

Professor Coogan has performed a deep service to our literary community. Insane religious and/or legal-judicial lunatics can no longer cling to this stone nonsense as rooted in Divine Theocratic Prophecy! Ancient Teacher-Scribe literary productions were a product of all too human 'human beings'!

Excellent scholarship.

Superb, fascinating text analysis of the versions of the Ten Commandments that appear in the Torah. Differentiates between the religious messages and those that pertain to living in human society. Excellent scholarship.

The agonizing correspondence between Jewish family members ensnared in the Nazi grip and their American relatives

Just a week after the Kristallnacht terror in 1938, young Luzie Hatch, a German Jew, fled Berlin to resettle in New York. Her rescuer was an American-born cousin and industrialist, Arnold Hatch. Arnold spoke no German, so Luzie quickly became translator, intermediary, and advocate for family left behind. Soon an unending stream of desperate requests from German relatives made their way to Arnold’s desk.

Luzie Hatch had faithfully preserved her letters both to and from far-flung relatives during the World War II era as well as copies of letters written on their behalf. This extraordinary collection, now housed at the American Jewish Committee Archives, serves as the framework for Exit Berlin. Charlotte R. Bonelli offers a vantage point rich with historical context, from biographical information about the correspondents to background on U.S. immigration laws, conditions at the Vichy internment camps, refuge in Shanghai, and many other topics, thus transforming the letters into a riveting narrative.

Arnold’s letters reveal an unfamiliar side of Holocaust history. His are the responses of an “average” American Jew, struggling to keep his own business afloat while also assisting dozens of relatives trapped abroad—most of whom he had never met and whose deathly situation he could not fully comprehend. This book contributes importantly to historical understanding while also uncovering the dramatic story of one besieged family confronting unimaginable evil.

Review
“Millions perished in the Holocaust, and for those few who managed to find refuge in a world of closed doors, it took relentless effort and persistence in the face of great peril and untold frustrations. Charlotte Bonelli’s collection of correspondence, Exit Berlin, tells a moving story and is an important historical record of one family’s struggles to escape. I recommend it highly as a unique account of dedication and steadfastness against big odds in a trying time.”—W. Michael Blumenthal, Former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin
(W. Michael Blumenthal)

“Exit Berlin is a powerful and important work that sheds significant light on what one person with determination and imagination could—and could not do—to save those she loved during the critical period of 1933–42.”—Michael Berenbaum, Professor of Jewish Studies, American Jewish University
(Michael Berenbaum)

“For a generation steeped in email, this heartrending collection of letters takes us to a more intimately communicative era—in which Jews, trapped in the nightmare of Hitler’s persecution, pleaded for help to escape to their cousins in America; and in which the latter tried desperately, generously, to respond.  These letters, personalizing one family’s ordeal, eloquently relay a tale of both horrendous abuse and life-threatening bureaucratic barriers.”—Michael R. Marrus, Chancellor Rose and Ray Wolfe Professor Emeritus of Holocaust Studies, University of Toronto and the author of The Holocaust in History.
(Michael R. Marrus)

“Always illuminating, full of moral tension and high drama, the letters that Luzie Hatch exchanged with her relations amount to an eyewitness account that allows us to penetrate the myths and statistics that sometimes obscure the hard facts of the Holocaust. Charlotte Bonelli, who assembled, selected and annotated the correspondence, has made an important contribution to both history and literature.”—Jonathan Kirsch, author of The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan (Jonathan Kirsch)

The best history lesson I've had.
By Judi Manning
I had the pleasure of being acquainted with Luzie Hatch since she was a long time client of Stephen Solomon, the Managing Partner of our firm. Luzie was a charming, humble woman and quite a character. She frequently would visit our office with her omnipresent shopping cart in tow. Her constant response to anyone who asked how she was, was "I'm old and decrepit".

When Luzie passed away in 2001, my coworker, Lisa Brennan and I assisted Roger Blane with the formidable task of of settling her Estate. In my opinion, the most daunting task was cleaning out the studio apartment in Forest Hills where she lived for more than fifty years. The closets and cabinets were full of very old and interesting items. Among the typical contents one would expect to find, were the unexpected, such as newspaper ads from the 1950's and 60's, issues of "Look" magazine, and Pan Am travel bags, blankets and pillows, an homage to the days when air travel was glamorous. There were also vestiges of the frugality of her generation, so unlike my own, such as bakery string, used paper bags and condiments from take-out food.

Her apartment was hot and uncomfortable, cluttered with the personal effects of a woman, whom, I learned while reading "Exit Berlin", was more extraordinary than I imagined. Our goal was to clean out her apartment as quickly as possible so that we could surrender it to the landlord. Unbeknownst to any of us, amid the clutter, therein contained a goldmine of great historical significance and value. Priceless artifacts, that could've easily been lost forever, if not for the brilliance and benevolence of Roger Blane.

Roger was excited as he contacted the AJC about the letters he found. A few years later, he told me a book was being written based upon Luzie's letters. We joked about who would be cast in the role of Luzie in the movie version. Fast forward, years later, "Exit Berlin" is published. Roger offered the book to me on many occasions, which I consistently declined. I was busy working, teaching and taking classes. I didn't think I would find it interesting. I was wrong. This book is extraordinary. It is well-written and informative. Charlotte Bonelli has resurrected Luzie through her writing, effectively demonstrating Luzie's strong will and resourcefulness to secure safe passage out of Nazi Germany for her family; a formidable feat for anyone, but especially for a young woman, alone in a foreign land.

I recommend this book for the many facts of Nazism and the war which I have learned from reading it. However, the lesson of greater importance is that evil and insurmountable obstacles can be overcome with sheer determination, hard work and perserverance.

My gratitude to Charlotte Bonelli for writing this book and to Roger Blane for his foresight to donate Luzie's letters to enrich and educate the minds of our generation and the minds of future generations.

Wonderful and important book!
By Karen G-K
Aside from being beautifully written and intensely engaging, Exit Berlin is one of the most important books written about this horrible period of time in our history. This is for several reasons. There are few, if any, books written from the perspective of Jews in America during the Shoah (Holocaust). Through the hundreds of letters and replies to which she had access, author Charlotte Bonelli has shared an eyewitness account of one family's desperate attempts to escape the Nazi terror and one woman's desperate attempt, with the help of her cousins, to help these relatives, many of whom she did not even know.

The author's extensive research into US and world events to provide a context for those letters, and the additional information she gained from traveling to Europe to interview descendants of the letter-writers, provides the reader with facts about contemporary US history, the depression, immigration law, the US economy, conditions in some other countries to which Jews fled, and more. At the same time, the book is a study in the lost art of letter writing. In today's society we rely on instant communication, such as email and text messaging, and a delay in a response of more than 5 minutes causes the sender to wonder if the message is being ignored. The author beautifully shares with us a time in which sending a letter to a loved one sometimes meant an 8 week delay until you knew it was received; a time when postage was so expensive relative to income, the sender, desperate to be sure a response was not delayed because of the cost, might enclose the return postage. Set in the context of trying to flee for their very lives, such a wait must have been harrowing.

This book was beautifully written and easy to read. It was more than a collection of letters. It was a book that everyone should read in order to learn more about what these few people in the US knew was going on in Europe as the Holocaust was brewing and in full swing, and what these few people tried to do in their own small, but large, way. As I read, I could almost hear the words being spoken. Schindler's List told the story of one man trying to rescue as many people as he could from the inside. Here is a story of one woman, with the help of her cousins, trying to rescue them from the US. Steven Spielberg, take note!

A deeply moving story, both personal and poignant as well as broad and dramatic.
By Roger D. Launius
This is both a fine historical study and a strikingly intimate portrait of one individual’s efforts to help members of her family leave Germany before and during World War II. Luzie Hatch, a German Jew, prevailed upon her cousin, businessman Arnold Hatch, in the United States to help her leave her native Berlin. She escaped to New York City in 1938 just a week after the horrific Kristallnacht, gained employment at the American Jewish Committee where she worked as a translator, and relentlessly worked on her own to help her relatives depart Germany. She and Arnold Hatch worked together to help those they could, providing funding, lobbying immigration officials, and corresponding with desperate relatives. They had considerable, but not complete success. The result is an intimate, often positive and sometimes tragic story of a single family’s efforts to escape the Nazis.

Luzie Hatch remained with the American Jewish Committee from 1938, when she was only 27 years old, until her retirement. She never married, had no children, and lived throughout her life in the same small apartment in a New York neighborhood. She died only a few days after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, at the age of 89. After her death Charlotte R. Bonelli, archivist of the American Jewish Committee, was contacted by the executor of Luzie’s estate to ask if they wanted her papers. Among them was a remarkable set of correspondence between Luzie, Arnold, and other Hatch family members concerning efforts to “exit Berlin.”

Bonelli’s work here is one part historian, one part editor, and one part annotator of this correspondence. This book tells a compelling story of desperation, assistance, and not a little success in helping family members to various parts of the world. Some ended up in Americas, in other parts of Europe, in places like Shanghai, and in South America. Some did not make it out of Germany and some made it to France where they were interned in Vichy France.

The most interesting character in this account, from my perspective, was Arnold Hatch. He had been born and raised in the U.S., spoke no German, and had a less than close relationship to his relatives in Germany. He was concerned about their welfare, and helped where he could, but he had to balance that with his concern for his immediate family and his business interests. He responded to never-ending pleas for help—political, legal, monetary—as best he could. Neither he, nor anyone else fully understood at this time that the systematic extermination of the Jewish people would be the aim of Hitler’s Germany.

"Exit Berlin" presents a deeply moving story, both personal and poignant as well as broad and dramatic.
