The Ten Commandments: A Short History of an Ancient Text, by Michael Coogan

The complex and surprising history of one of the world’s most famous texts

In this lively and provocative book, Michael Coogan guides readers into the ancient past to examine the iconic Ten Commandments, also known as the Decalogue. How, among all the laws reportedly given on Mount Sinai, did the Ten Commandments become the Ten Commandments? When did that happen? There are several versions of the Decalogue in the Old Testament, so how have different groups determined which is the most authoritative? Why were different versions created?

Coogan discusses the meanings the Ten Commandments had for audiences in biblical times and observes that the form of the ten proscriptions and prohibitions was not fixed—as one would expect since they were purported to have come directly from God—nor were the Commandments always strictly observed. In later times as well, Jews and especially Christians ignored and even rejected some of the prohibitions, although the New Testament clearly acknowledges the special status of the Ten Commandments. Today it is plain that some of the values enshrined in the Decalogue are no longer defensible, such as the ownership of slaves and the labeling of women as men’s property. Yet in line with biblical precedents, the author concludes that while a literal observance of the Ten Commandments is misguided, some of their underlying ideals remain valid in a modern context.

From Booklist
Biblical scholar Coogan seeks to disarm disputes over displaying the Ten Commandments on public property by demonstrating that the document in question is not now nor ever has been graven in stone. There are three versions in the Torah and while two (Ex 19, Dt 5) are quite—but not perfectly—alike, the third (Ex 34) is very different and often called the Ritual Decalogue because it focuses on Jewish temple practices. Moreover, none of the three is pristine because, Coogan argues, there was an older original form that they all approximate. Also, over the ages, particular commandments’ meanings and legal statuses have been subtly or greatly modified by some weighty authorities, indeed, including Jesus. By now, and contrary to what an American Catholic cardinal pronounced, Coogan says, they’re very much “up for grabs” by anyone wrapping himself in the banner of virtue. Coogan concludes this engrossing and enlightening guide to one of world’s great legal codes by discussing how properly to honor the Ten Commandments in the U.S. --Ray Olson

Review
“Devastating. . . . [Coogan] knows the Bible inside out.”—Globe and Mail on God and Sex: What the Bible Really Says, also by Michael Coogan   (Globe and Mail)

"Readers… can trust Coogan, a biblical scholar of the highest order.”—Publishers Weekly on God and Sex: What the Bible Really Says (Publishers Weekly)

“Coogan is interested in the commandments not only as an ancient text but as a living, social one, and enjoys grappling with the issues that surround them today as much as he does providing historical background. Legislators, particularly, should read this book, before they try to mount tablets on the courthouse steps.”—Nicholas Mancuso, The Daily Beast (Nicholas Mancuso The Daily Beast)

“[An] engrossing and enlightening guide.”—Ray Olson, Booklist (Ray Olson Booklist)

"Coogan offers a nice, concise history of the Ten Commandments, in which he shows the development of the text itself, drawing on earlier legal codes which appear to have influenced them. He takes the reader through the code itself, comparing and contrasting the three versions in the OT."—Paul Mueller, Religious Studies Review (Paul Mueller Religious Studies Review 2015-03-01)

From the Author
Michael Coogan on the Ten Commandments:

The Ten Commandments have become a focal point in the culture wars that divide society. Held to be a concise summary of what God wants everyone to do—and mostly not to do—they have been displayed in public spaces to remind all of their supposedly unchangeable message.

But if the Ten Commandments were given directly by God, then why does the Bible have different versions of these supposedly divinely given rules? Why do modern displays abridge and alter them? Why have both Jews and Christians throughout history sometimes ignored and even disobeyed them? Are all of the values these ancient and historically conditioned laws express still valid today?

As a biblical scholar I have been both amused and troubled by how the Ten Commandments have been wrenched from their original context and made into a kind of graven image, not to be examined or challenged. In this book I trace the history of the Ten Commandments from Moses to Cecil B. DeMille and the United States Supreme Court. I do so without presuppositions or dogmatic constraints, paying close attention to what they actually say. Contrary to many pastors and politicians who view the Ten Commandments as a timeless code, I conclude that some of the specific prohibitions and some of the values underlying them are no longer appropriate or acceptable in a modern, pluralistic society. Others, however, enshrine more universal ideals, that should be honored, although not by public display.

The Ten Commandments Yesterday and Today
By Mary Wendell
If you're going to read a book about the Ten Commandments, you want it to be written by a Bible scholar of the highest order like Michael Coogan. In this book he not only discusses the history of the commandments, but the modern application as well by answering questions regarding their relevance, the different versions and interpretations, and their social significance.

The Ten Commandments: A Short History of an Ancient Text is written in a style that is both engaging and easy to understand even if you're not a Bible scholar yourself. Coogan begins his exploration with an anecdote about the 1956 film The Ten Commandments and the lawsuits that ensued as a result of promotional tablet monuments installed on government property. (In the end these displays were deemed legal because they were found to be more historical than religious in nature.) By describing this interesting event, the author succeeds in both drawing readers in and opening up a whole host of questions and discussion topics. Those looking for advanced details on Abraham should follow this text with Abraham in History and Tradition.

Books on Biblical studies can often be dry and technical, but this one hits the mark by mixing up historical analysis with questions that we, today, might be curious about. Like why are there only ten commandments? Which commandments are outdated? Should the commandments still be held in such high regard? Did the people who lived when they were recorded, follow them closely?

Great book for scholars *and average readers!

Superb Biblical Reading Materials without the astute philological markers that illuminate these two pericopes!
By John E.D.P. Malin
Competent scholarship by an indefatigable author. Professor Coogan does not deal with the thesis that these memorial stone stelae stone laws were ordered by Darius the Great: throughout the pax Persica. He established Dat [Old Persian-Aramaic, "law, truth"] as the foundation of his Imperium. Each major city had to erect stone tablet laws for strangers and merchants entering their city to read, so they would not violate any of the city's major rules of law. The time frame is late 6th century, ca. 520s B.C.E. for this extraordinary achievement, Emperor Darius, was given the highest political distinction as conferred by this ancient epithet of the Hebrew-Israelite-Jewish State: "Lover of Yahweh!" [Second Isaiah 48:14] It was then that this pericope was inserted in the ancient scroll of Deuteronomy. It underwent several redactions as the Book itself reveals. Later, it was re-duplicated in the appropriate Exodus passage, with more than a few scribal stylistic variations. These were later harmonized by later scribes to conform to its original parent passage in Deteuronomy. This is the real history of this famous Tablet!

Professor Coogan has performed a deep service to our literary community. Insane religious and/or legal-judicial lunatics can no longer cling to this stone nonsense as rooted in Divine Theocratic Prophecy! Ancient Teacher-Scribe literary productions were a product of all too human 'human beings'!

Excellent scholarship.

Superb, fascinating text analysis of the versions of the Ten Commandments that appear in the Torah. Differentiates between the religious messages and those that pertain to living in human society. Excellent scholarship.
