About the Author
Martine Batchelor, a former Buddhist nun, studied Zen Buddhism under the guidance of Kusan Sunim and is the author of Let Go, Women in Korean Zen, Buddhism and Ecology, Principles of Zen, Meditation for Life, and The Path of Compassion: The Bodhisattva Precepts, a translation of the Chinese Brahma’s Net Sutra. She lives in France.

This book is as good as any and better than many in understanding the Buddha and Buddhist practices. It is very understandable yet not trite.

Fantastic Intro to Buddhism

This is an excellent, thoughtful and concise introduction to the subject by a former Buddhist monk that covers:
-- the foundational ideas of the Buddha in the early Pali canon texts
-- the life of the Buddha
-- the similarities and differences among the wide variety of Buddhist sects that have evolved from the first fundamental teachings.
Martine Batchelor is an experienced guide who adds a lot of wisdom and insight to the facts. The book really combines both academic scholarship and pragmatic wisdom in a unique way.

Earnest

This is an earnest, but it must be said, dull book from a very interesting woman. Her books on Korean Zen and her own story are lively, intriguing, and interesting. This reads like a long encyclopedia entry: it is very clear, quite authoritative, but without any life. The last chapter, on modern buddhist women is the worthiest.
