Elephants on the Edge: What Animals Teach Us about Humanity, by G. A. Bradshaw

Drawing on accounts from India to Africa and California to Tennessee, and on research in neuroscience, psychology, and animal behavior, G. A. Bradshaw explores the minds, emotions, and lives of elephants. Wars, starvation, mass culls, poaching, and habitat loss have reduced elephant numbers from more than ten million to a few hundred thousand, leaving orphans bereft of the elders who would normally mentor them. As a consequence, traumatized elephants have become aggressive against people, other animals, and even one another; their behavior is comparable to that of humans who have experienced genocide, other types of violence, and social collapse. By exploring the elephant mind and experience in the wild and in captivity, Bradshaw bears witness to the breakdown of ancient elephant cultures.

All is not lost. People are working to save elephants by rescuing orphaned infants and rehabilitating adult zoo and circus elephants, using the same principles psychologists apply in treating humans who have survived trauma. Bradshaw urges us to support these and other models of elephant recovery and to solve pressing social and environmental crises affecting all animals, human or not.

From Publishers Weekly
This thoughtful book by animal trauma specialist Bradshaw draws analogies between human and animal culture to illustrate the profound breakdown occurring in elephant societies. Extraordinarily sensitive and social, elephants' survival has long depended on their matriarchal lineage—now sundered by culling the herds, which disrupts the hierarchy—and their psyches have been broken by prolonged isolation and separation, painful hooks used as training tools and general cruelty. Captured elephants meet the criteria of the psychiatirc handbook DSM for suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Drawing on research on animal trauma, concentration camp survivors and Konrad Lorenz–type ethology, Bradshaw makes a multidisciplinary condemnation of elephant abuse and celebrates those working on rehabilitating and healing the animals—including an elephant massage therapist and the owners of an elephant sanctuary in the Tennessee hills. In the end, anthropomorphizing isn't the issue; Bradshaw says that instead of giving animals human feelings, we should observe that they have feelings that correlate with what we may feel in similar circumstances. With its heartbreaking findings and irrefutable conclusions, this book bears careful reading and consideration. (Oct.)

Review
"'African peoples and wildlife have been bound together in a delicate network of interdependence since ancient times. The arrival of colonialism tore apart these bonds: human brother now fights against elephant brother, and mothers of both species mourn. Elephants on the Edge is an urgent call to end this strife and for humanity to embrace once more the traditions that kept the peace with our animal kin.' Archbishop Emeritus Desmond M. Tutu, 1984 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 'Bradshaw brings home to us forcefully what we should have realized long ago: that destroying the family life of highly social, intelligent animals leads inevitably to misery among individual survivors and pathological misbehaviour among the group.' J. M. Coetzee, Nobel Laureate in Literature, 2003 'At times sad and at times heartwarming, Elephants on the Edge successfully bridges the gap between species. Bradshaw helps us to understand not only elephants, but all animals, including ourselves.' Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation"

From the Author

Q: How did you become interested in elephants and their welfare?

A: Often, when people who work with elephants are asked this question, they answer, “The elephants chose me.” And I have to say that has been my case. From a more rational perspective, my decision to study elephants was compelled by their obvious suffering.  The stress has been so extreme that it has led to such un-elephant-like behavior—what the media refers to as “elephant violence.” Changes in behavior from what is considered normal don't just happen out of the blue; there are reasons for them. I wanted to understand the nature of elephant trauma, the causes of their psychological anguish, and how to help the elephants.

Q: What is it about elephants that inspires you?

A: They are honest and straightforward, and prize relationships above all. Elephants embody so many qualities that we humans admire, and offer a model and inspiration for what we can become.

Q: What hopes do you have for the future of elephants?

A: We have to be concerned about the present. It is not just the future, but the conditions under which elephants live today that are so dire. We need to pay attention to the great suffering of individual elephants and other wildlife, and urgently remedy these situations. If we can fix the present, we can fix the future.

A Dose of Reality
By Lori Marino
In response to the comments by Aldo Matteucci I'd like to inject a dose of current scientific reality into the situation. Matteucci does not appear to be familiar with the most recent neuroscience and comparative psychological research. So, I'd like to correct some of his misinterpretations of Gay Bradshaw's arguments. Matteucci makes the naive claim that the human brain is a "chaotic structure" that seems to be haphazardly put together and, by implication, so much more complex than the brains of other species that inference from humans to other animals is untenable. To the contrary, the available research converges on the finding that all animals, including humans, share the same brain structures related to the processing of emotions and that these structures and their biochemical connections to the rest of the body are among the most conserved evolutionarily. In decades of neuroscientific investigation we have yet to find a single attribute of the human brain that sets it apart qualitatively from the rest of the animal kingdom. Moreover, findings on cognitive abilities in other animals are appearing in well-respected journals practically on a monthly basis showing that so-called uniquely human capacities are distributed across many other species. Dr. Bradshaw's arguments are based on a solid body of scientific evidence, which clearly refutes Matteucci's point.

Might I suggest that the strident nature of Matteucci's criticism be best understood in the context of his archaic argument that by attending to the needs of elephants and other animals we are allowing the "starvation of billions of people". Underlying such remarks is the banal and unsupported perspective that it is "us against them" and that we must choose between humans and other animals. Matteucci appears offended by the notion that the problems faced by other species would be placed on a par with those of humans. In doing so he misses Bradshaw's most profound point that humans and other animals share critical psychological characteristics that make us all vulnerable to damage and trauma. We are all in this together.

... does not include much of her contributions towards the better treatment of elephants
By Amazon Customer
Bradshaw writes this in a manner that does not include much of her contributions towards the better treatment of elephants, but it is very well written and thorough. Wrote a college essay on this book and received an A. I would recommend this book, and I also recommend that you do some background research on Gay Bradshaw to learn about her importance to the world of animal treatment in our world today.

Revolutionary and breathtaking
By Amy M. Mayers
Thanks to scientific discoveries that tell us more and more about the lives, abilities and consciousness of non-human animals, we have dwindling justification for drawing a line between humans and other animals. A subtitle for this powerful, deeply moving book might be, "We are them; they are us."

In this sweeping book, G.A. Bradshaw reviews what humans have done to elephants and, perhaps more important, explores what that has meant for elephants and elephant society. I think anyone who advocates for animals will find this a disturbing but deeply satisfying book. Bradshaw reminds us how much we have to learn from elephants which, in the end, will bring us back to ourselves.

Jane Goodall says it's not about animal rights, it's about human responsibility. Bradshaw's book is a landmark contribution for those who seek to accept full responsibility for ourselves and our actions.

Yemen: Dancing on the Heads of Snakes, by Victoria Clark

Yemen is the dark horse of the Middle East. Every so often it enters the headlines for one alarming reason or another—links with al-Qaeda, kidnapped Westerners, explosive population growth—then sinks into obscurity again. But, as Victoria Clark argues in this riveting book, we ignore Yemen at our peril. The poorest state in the Arab world, it is still dominated by its tribal makeup and has become a perfect breeding ground for insurgent and terrorist movements.

Clark returns to the country where she was born to discover a perilously fragile state that deserves more of our understanding and attention. On a series of visits to Yemen between 2004 and 2009, she meets politicians, influential tribesmen, oil workers and jihadists as well as ordinary Yemenis. Untangling Yemen’s history before examining the country’s role in both al-Qaeda and the wider jihadist movement today, Clark presents a lively, clear, and up-to-date account of a little-known state whose chronic instability is increasingly engaging the general reader.

A history or travel book?
By LINA A. AL-ERYANI
I agree with one of the reviewers who described this book as: "accessible and entertaining read" because this is exactly what it is, upon reading this book, you should be aware that many historical events included are not accurate as the writer failed to check her facts which is significant in any book that claim to highlight "Yemen's history and politics". What is also amazing is the fact this book was highly reviewed, only Shelagh Weir, see: [...] commented on the fact that the historical events were e not accurate. From my side, I found the following glaring examples: It was mentioned that Al-Iryani was a president from 1969, the fact is he was a president from 1967. The writer aid he was in prison for 15 years, he was in prison for seven years. These are just some of the examples of inaccurate information included in this book. I am really amazed how a respectable publishing house: Yale University Press, publish such a book, without ensuring that the historical event are correct, I was under the impression that any book is reviewed by a subject expert reviewer before endorsing it for publications? Apparently NOT.
Another reviewer described Clark writing as" a very carefully-researched distillation of Yemen's history" I am sorry to say as both a post graduate of Yemeni history and a Yemeni citizen, I failed to see his point, in fact the opposite was true. The writer should have put introductory statement clearly that this is a travel book and it does not by any means depict the true and factual history of Yemen that would have maintained her credibility and showed her respect for her readers.

The finest balance: essential reading for Yemen
By H. Thompson
A colorful, accessible and entertaining read, Victoria Clark's book fills a yawning gap as the only current portrait of Yemen that sits between the very few distinctly academic and impenetrable tomes and the equally sparse but more popular anecdotal/travel reading. She's painstakingly combined her journalist's eye for the telling detail with a very carefully-researched distillation of Yemen's history and current condition. The two sections add up to an overall impression that is essential for any well-informed debate on Yemen and its rather rapidly unfolding future. Clark manages to set Yemen in the context of its past, and describe the current structures without laying out a prescriptive analysis: this is left to the reader. The book is finely referenced, and contains a fine bibliography and index. Essential.

A Must Read For Anyone Remotely Interested In Yemen
By N. Murched
Very insightful look into Yemen's history and politics. I have done a great deal of research on Yemen, and this book brings everything together. It is amazing how the author has detailed so much of Yemen's social behaviors with pin point precession. I lived in Yemen for about 12 years, and Ms. Clark amazed me with some of the detail that she put in her book about Yemenis that I seen first hand. I would definitely recommend this book to any one with the remotest interest in Yemen. I have bought several copies and given them to others. Great Job Ms. Clark!!!

Birthright: People and Nature in the Modern World, by Stephen R. Kellert

Human health and well-being are inextricably linked to nature; our connection to the natural world is part of our biological inheritance. In this engaging book, a pioneer in the field of biophilia—the study of human beings' inherent affinity for nature—sets forth the first full account of nature's powerful influence on the quality of our lives. Stephen Kellert asserts that our capacities to think, feel, communicate, create, and find meaning in life all depend upon our relationship to nature. And yet our increasing disconnection and alienation from the natural world reflect how seriously we have undervalued its important role in our lives.

Weaving scientific findings together with personal experiences and perspectives, Kellert explores how our humanity in the most fundamental sense—including our physical health, and capacities for affection, aversion, intellect, control, aesthetics, exploitation, spirituality, and communication are deeply contingent on the quality of our connections to the natural world.  Because of this dependency, the human species has developed over the course of its evolution an inherent need to affiliate with nature.  But, like much of what it means to be human, this inborn tendency must be learned to become fully functional.  In other words, it is a birthright that must be earned. He discusses how we can restore this balance to nature by means of changes in how we raise children, educate ourselves, use land and resources, develop building and community design, practice our ethics, and conduct our everyday lives. Kellert's moving book provides exactly what is needed now: a fresh understanding of how much our essential humanity relies on being a part of the natural world.

“I cried as I read Birthright....So expressively and delicately does Kellert expose the emotional bonds among nature, humanity, and the individual that it’s difficult not to be moved."—Daniel J. Witter, D. J. Case & Associates (Daniel J. Witter 2012-03-20)

"This is a great distillation of decades of scholarship on what might be thought of as “biophilia and beyond.” This book will be of great interest to the growing public who sense that we have become too separate from nature."—Thomas E. Lovejoy, University Professor, George Mason University and Biodiversity Chair, The Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment (Thomas E. Lovejoy 2012-03-20)

“Birthright eloquently, clearly, and persuasively makes the case for the fundamental importance of humanity’s experiences with nature throughout life. This is the first time I’ve seen such an effective effort to provide a personal explanation that artfully uses everyday examples.  Kellert's book will resonate with a wide variety of readers.”—Cheryl Charles, President and CEO, Children & Nature Network (Cheryl Charles 2012-03-20)

"Birthright is truly magnificent in so many ways. The empirical and intuitive are seamlessly woven together throughout. The book made me want to do something beautiful in the world! "—Gretel Van Wieren, Michigan State University (Gretel Van Wieren 2012-03-22)

“Stephen Kellert’s heartfelt Birthright is a moving memoir, a finely tuned analysis, and a gift to future generations and to the individuals and organizations determined to usher in a twenty-first-century human-nature reunion. Here is a topological map of that future.”—Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle and chairman emeritus of the Children & Nature Network (Richard Louv 2012-03-23)

“Stephen R. Kellert invites readers on a companionable journey into neighborhood and urban center to reveal how biophilic design can help restore our ancient, beneficial relationship with the natural world.”—Terril Shorb, Ph.D., Prescott College (Terril Shorb 2012-03-23)

"Weaving a trove of learning together with engaging story and reflection, Kellert artfully explores how the deeply engrained human aptitude for kinship with all life is an adaptive strategy we need to get us through these uncertain times. The future depends on catalyzing 'long-tern human self-interest,' and this book shows how even the darker sides of our biophilia can serve this end. Here is a welcome tonic for toxic times, moving past polarized argument to the mindful persuasion of one who has found a sustaining connection with the natural world. This is a must-read for anyone who cares about the world and how to enrich our connection with the forces that sustain us."—Alison Hawthorne Deming, University of Arizona (Alison Hawthorne Deming 2012-08-03)

“Kellert successfully portrays his spiritual unity with the plants, animals, and elements that embrace and refresh him.” —Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)

“An exploration of the specific ways in which a connection with the natural world affects the well-being of humankind. . . . Kellert isn’t advocating for a Luddite existence, but he argues convincingly for an increased understanding of our place as part of nature rather than just conquerors of it.” —Kirkus Reviews (Kirkus Reviews)

“Birthright reinforces the importance of nature in a healthy, fulfilling life and is an illuminating read that will resonate with lovers of the outdoors.”—Jack Fisher, The Leader, National Outdoor Leadership School (Jack Fisher The Leader, National Outdoor Leadership School)

“[T]his is a very thought-provoking book. . . . Kellert draws both on his personal opinions/observations as well as published peer-review literature. And it’s his personal interjections that infuse this book with a sense of wonderment and respect for the natural world. . . . By revealing his humanity in relation to nature, he helped me to better understand a bit of mine.”—T. DeLene Beeland, Wild Muse (T. DeLene Beeland Wild Muse)

“Birthright has much to recommend it, including its synthesis of Kellert’s many areas of expertise, its non-technical language, and its advocacy of an argument deserving of a hearing.”—Christian Diehm, Biological Conservation (Christian Diehm Biological Conservation)

"Kellert’s book will stimulate you not only how to rethink your life and its values, but how you might increase wonder in your life right now.”—Kevin T. McEneaney, The Millbrook Independent (The Millbrook Independent)

A Modern Druid
By Kevin McEneaney
Students of E. O. Wilson are translating his discoveries in sociobiology to other disciplines, especially in the new field of biophilia that Wilson created. Wilson defined biophilia as "the urge to affiliate with other forms of life.” Stephen Kellert, a former student of Wilson, has been one of Wilson’s foremost and successful advocates. Kellert’s twelfth book, birthright, investigates the love of nature from a psychological and ethical perspective. Wilson’s seminal influence has been branching into disciplines like architecture, environmentalism, anthropology, and even corporate life.

The central argument of Kellert’s new book? Unless we develop a culture that values and loves nature, our lives are diminished in various ways. Our recent and excessive fascination with the artificial world runs counter to the very environment which we evolved from. If we sever our ties with nature, we severely damage our practical common sense, which has made us the evolutionary wonders we are. Our birthright (the lower case type employed in the title invokes humility) to be happy must embrace both love of ourselves and our environment. Environmentalists often say that unless this happens, we will perish and leave the earth to insects and bacteria, yet the irony remains that bacteria and insects have much to teach us about life.

Our central strengths has been our paranoid brilliance. In some cases, this produces blindness. For example, no one loves the mosquito or poisonous spider, yet our fear of them has depreciated our ability to value all insects. Kellert’s chapter on insect fear is one of the most illuminating chapters in the book. Sometimes we don’t always love ourselves, and we sometimes project, unnecessarily, our fears onto the landscape. A great ironic line in the pop sci-fi flick Starship Troopers (1997) runs: “I thought we were smarter than the bugs.”

Like Wilson, Kellert appropriates personal anecdotes that run in tandem with astute psychological, aesthetic, ethical (and in Kellert’s arguments), religious observations. Kellert possesses a stronger sense of aesthetics (which, according to recent research, is genetically encoded in us) than Wilson, and is able to import biophilic perspectives (that interconnected gestalt of all living beings) into learning and working conditions, arguing through sociological statistics that healthy and beautiful environments mean more productive workers and learners. On the subject of poetry, he limits himself to quoting a poem about dreaming by seven-year-old Peter Weinberg. That poem should elicit envy from our most mature poets.

The French philosophes who dominated thinking from the 1960s through 1990s constructed wooden tree huts with tribal fiefdoms instead of forests. The attraction of Wilson’s theories in the hands of Kellert consists of its practical, Baconian presentation. Such a posture retains power through its universality, a universality not manifested since the syncretism of the Hellenic ideal that drew from all known religious traditions the new universal religion called Christianity. Later, St. Francis of Assisi revived Christianity by re-setting it within the pagan world-view from which Christianity had sprung before it strayed into artificial ritual and absurdly superstitious dogmas.

Wilson and Kellert propose that biophilic perspectives be applied to all disciplines, which is why Kellert, the Tweedy Ordway Professor Emeritus at Yale’s School of Forestry, is creating a master’s degree in Nature Studies for the Yale School of Divinity, which has been the top divinity school in America for the past two hundred years. Yale is ready to adapt, teach, and influence not only popular culture in our country, but the world.

Kellert’s book will stimulate you: not only how to rethink your life and its values, but how you might increase wonder in your life right now. Kellert’s eye is on the forest, not the individual tree that helped to produce this particular illumination. As a specialist in forestry, Kellert has interesting things to say about our cultural attitudes toward trees.
The word druid literally means tree priest.

An important lens for decision-making about the future of the planet
By Paul Reader
Kellert distills a large body of historical, ecological and green theological literature, together personal accounts (Interludes) to construct a practical ecological discourse and instrument for measuring our relationship to life and death in the world. At one end we can measure the intensity of the Modern era of abstraction, anthropocentrism, urbanity and death; at the other biophilia, our love of life, living things and the potential act with celebration as a contributor to the living world.
I'm sure I will cite it often for the short cut it provides to ecological thinking.
On a minor point, his treatment of Christianity as a cause of anthropocentrism, after Lynn White, does not really do justice to much of Christian thinking in relation to Creation and life, and misses the point that Christianity is ultimately theocentric not anthropocentric. Of course this is an easy mistake to make given the practice of many Christians in the Modern world. There is also a tendency to privilege environmentally thinking intellectuals of the 20th and 19th Century, and indigenous knowledge, without acknowledgement of European folk knowledges and ecological relationships. European folk traditions still alive in pre-World War II and the closeness of these communities to the earth, their suffering under the advance of Modernism are voiceless in this discourse. The rise of urban intelectualism, is really far more recent than perhaps we often imagine.

Cutting Edge Analysis
By rholland24
Western civilization, the last 10,000 years, encompasses .3% of human life on this globe. Human need and capacity is largely determined by the preceding 99.7% of human existence. Stephen Kellert identifies what western civilization has obscured to our individual and collective detriment. This book is among my top ten overall for understanding the dysfunctions of our times.

The Letters of C. Vann Woodward, by C. Vann Woodward

C. Vann Woodward was one of the most prominent and respected American historians of the twentieth century. He was also a very gifted and frequent writer of letters, from his earliest days as a young student in Arkansas and Georgia to his later days at Yale when he became one of the arbiters of American intellectual culture. For the first time, his sprightly, wry, sympathetic, and often funny letters are published, including those he wrote to figures as diverse as John Kennedy, David Riesman, Richard Hofstadter, and Robert Penn Warren. The letters shed new light not only on Woodward himself, but on what it meant to be an American radical and public intellectual, as well as on the complex politics and discourse of the historical profession and the anxious modulations of Southern culture.

Review
“These letters offer a colorful chronology of the events and associations, personal and professional, that made C. Vann Woodward a formative presence in Southern and American history.”—The Wall Street Journal (Wall Street Journal)

‘Woodward was a consistently first-rate correspondent, and these letters offer an eloquent insight into the writing of history as an ongoing, collaborative project based around candid exchange.’—Tom F. Wright, Times Literary Supplement (Tom F. Wright Times Literary Supplement 2014-04-11)

“Readers interested in the struggles over civil rights, academic freedom, or the inner workings of the historical profession will find this book riveting. . . . Writing in 1972 to a much younger Michael O’Brien, Woodward described himself as a ‘Liberal Conservative Populist Marxist,’ and all those dimensions of his ambivalence unfold through these expertly edited and annotated letters.”—James T. Kloppenberg, author of Reading Obama: Dreams, Hope, and the American Political Tradition
(James T. Kloppenberg)

“In this age when letter-writing is dying, Michael O'Brien's collection of Woodward's letters is a treasure. O'Brien beautifully demonstrates how Woodward used letters as a ‘medium of observation and criticism’ and a probing of his own ‘identity.’ This book is personal (Woodward's famous ‘ironic subtlety’ in full array), but more so, it is a sublime literary display of the craft of history from inside the process of a man devoted to taking scholarship to the public.”—David W. Blight, Class of 1954 Professor of History, Yale University, and author of American Oracle: The Civil War in the Civil Rights Era
(David W. Blight)

“These selections strike me as smart, appropriate, and—in so far as possible with so guarded a correspondent as Woodward—strikingly evocative of his temperament and mindset as both evolved and persisted over time. O'Brien has given Woodward’s letters the respectful, measured treatment that they deserve.”—James C. Cobb, author of Away Down South: A History of Southern Identity
(James C. Cobb)

The Pronouncements of a Famous Historian Unwilling to Allow his Personality to Emerge
By Dr. Laurence Raw
C. Vann Woodward (1908-99) was an American intellectual historian with a particular interest in Southern history. He spent the majority of his academic career at Johns Hopkins followed by a long stint at Yale. After achieving considerable success with his first major work on Georgia politician Tom Watson, he produced a series of books on race relations, the most celebrated of which was THE STRANGE CAREER OF JIM CROW (1955), which argued that segregation was not a "natural" state of society but a late development during the 1890s in the post-Reconstruction era. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 for MARY CHESNUT'S CIVIL WAR, an edited version of Mary Chesnut's Civil War diary.

Whether Woodward's influence extended much beyond academic circles is moot. Late on in his life he had a spat with Gore Vidal, who accused him of being one of those academics enjoying the privileges of his existence without actively engaging in the political realities of his time. Woodward was certainly interested in major issues such as racial equality, but the letters give little indication of any active involvement other than regular communicational exchanges with public figures such as Martin Luther King or Hillary Clinton.

The letters are quite curious in terms of content. They reveal a lot about Woodward's incisive mind, as well as his capacity to analyze essays and books in exhaustive detail and offer constructive criticism as a result. On the other hand they tell us about Woodward as a person, other than his in-built reluctance to disclose his feelings in print. He lost his wife and son to cancer, but little reference is made to their passing, or to the effect that such tragedies might have had on his life. Nor do we learn much about the often difficult experiences of being a Southerner transplanted to the North. Woodward assumes a persona, of the sage pronouncing judgement on academic affairs as well as commenting on the political situation, but we do feel that he is very interested in active engagement; the kind of engagement that might put his comfortable living at risk.

To be honest, many of the letters are interesting only insofar as they reveal the petty jealousies and/or rivalries of academia. Woodward is particularly hard on those colleagues that do not meet his high academic standards; nor does he allow for the fact that non-academics can make equally penetrating judgements on American history without the rigorous years of training experienced by most professors. As time goes by, he becomes increasingly skeptical of the ways in which the humanities are developing; he dislikes "theory" and oral history on the grounds that they do not seem sufficiently "academic." By the end of his life he had become rather cantankerous in his pronouncements, as if reluctant to move with changing times.

Readers interested in the academic progress of American history in the mid-twentieth century might derive great benefit from this book, but to non-specialists it does seem somewhat parochial.

Managing the Mountains: Land Use Planning, the New Deal, and the Creation of a Federal Landscape in Appalachia (Yale Agrarian Studies Serie

Historians have long viewed the massive reshaping of the American landscape during the New Deal era as unprecedented. This book uncovers the early twentieth-century history rich with precedents for the New Deal in forest, park, and agricultural policy. Sara M. Gregg explores the redevelopment of the Appalachian Mountains from the 1910s through the 1930s, finding in this region a changing paradigm of land use planning that laid the groundwork for the national New Deal. Through an intensive analysis of federal planning in Virginia and Vermont, Gregg contextualizes the expansion of the federal government through land use planning and highlights the deep intellectual roots of federal conservation policy.

Review
“Sara Gregg has written a pathbreaking book in the rapidly growing field of environmental history. Focusing on the Appalachian forests and mountains in Virginia and Vermont, she illustrates how much transformative attention, both public and private, was focused on the health of the landscape and the people who lived in it.”—Alan Brinkley, author of The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century and of Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression

(Alan Brinkley 2010-05-03)

“Gregg explores an under-examined region through serious and extensive scholarship. She is a solid writer who conveys her ideas and stories in extremely readable prose, without the use of jargon. Her writing flows well and is wonderfully easy to follow."—Neil Maher, author of Nature's New Deal: The Civilian Conservation Corps and the Roots of the American Environmental Movement (Neil Maher 2010-01-30)

"....[T]his book is altogether a welcome addition to the expanding field of Japanese migration and transnational American Studies. The book invites readers to think more critically across the national borders and class boundaries that have tended to confine the field of our study until recently."—Yukari Takai, Histoire Sociale/Social History (Karl Appuhn)

"The public wild lands of Appalachia contain curious human traces - stone walls, old foundations, cemeteries - that rest beneath an obscuring mantle of trees. In Managing the Mountains, her deft comparative analysis of the coming of federal conservation to Virginia and Vermont, Sara Gregg recovers for us the compelling stories behind these modest ruins - stories of local people, state politicians, and federal planners who managed and endured the transition from private farms to public forests. This is environmental history at its best."—Paul Sutter, author of Driven Wild

Vulgar Eloquence: On the Renaissance Invention of English Literature, by Sean Keilen

This original book challenges prevailing accounts of English literary history, arguing that English literature emerged as a distinct category during the late sixteenth century, as England’s relationship with classical Rome was suffering an unprecedented strain. Exploring the myths through which poets such as Geffrey Whitney, William Shakespeare, and John Milton understood the nature of their art, Sean Keilen shows how they invented archaic origins for a new kind of writing.
When history obliged English poets to regard themselves as victims of the Roman Conquest rather than rightful heirs of classical Latin culture, it also required a redefinition of their relations with Roman literature. Keilen shows how the poets’ search for a new beginning drew them to rework familiar fables about Orpheus, Philomela, and Circe, and invent a new point of departure for their own poetic history.

Review
"Keilen rethinks the package of ideas and facts we call antiquarianism, so that antiquarian is the last thing they seem."—Annabel Patterson, author of Nobody's Perfect
(Annabel Patterson)

"Keilen possesses an original, unclassifiable intelligence. He weaves elegantly philological arguments about the antique into a counterplot that illuminates a nativist, unrefined, and hybrid early modern England. Vulgar Eloquence will make us rethink the Spenser-to-Shakespeare-to-Milton canon, not by throwing out classicism and tradition, but by redefining it."—Leonard Barkan, Princeton University

(Leonard Barkan)

About the Author
Sean Keilen is assistant professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania.

Japanomania in the Nordic Countries, 1875-1918From Mercatorfonds

This extensive publication, complete with hundreds of illustrations by such renowned artists as Carl Larsson, Edvard Munch, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Helene Schjerfbeck, Pekka Halonen, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Gerhard Munthe, Pietro Krohn, and Frida Hansen, among others, offers an unprecedented study of Japanese influence on the visual arts in the Nordic countries. This unlikely diffusion of Japanese culture, known collectively as Japonisme, became increasingly apparent in England, France, and elsewhere in Europe during the 19th century, although nowhere was the influence seemingly as pervasive as it was throughout the Nordic countries. The book reveals how the widespread interest in Japanese aesthetics helped to establish notions of a fundamental unity between the arts and transformed the region’s visual vocabulary. The adoption of Japanese motifs and styles in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark gave a necessary cohesion to their existing artistic language, creating a vital balance within and among all of the decorative arts.
