"Oooh, aren't I bad?" As it turns out, no.

I hadn't originally intended to visit San Lorenzo de El Escorial on a recent trip to Spain, but changed my mind because my father was very keen to hear what it was like. I went with almost no idea of what to expect, and because I absolutely hate audioguides, I wandered through what proved to be a really interesting, impressive, and in many ways very attractive, building complex with nothing but the minimal written information to guide me. So I've completely missed the mythology that has apparently grown up around the Escorial and its founder, Philip II. As a consequence, I may not have been the best audience for Kamen's book, which is largely concerned with dispelling that mythology. Yet I'm glad I read it for the insight it gave me into a place I really enjoyed visiting, and its examination of the preconceptions and historiographical shortcomings that seem to dog this particular field.

This is not a book about Spanish history or the process of designing and constructing the Escorial. Instead, Kamen presents a short examination of the design influences, purpose and status of the Escorial. The book is focused on Philip's lifetime, with little information on the Escorial's subsequent history. Since the Escorial was a personal project of Philip, his actions and beliefs form a significant part of the book. Each chapter is short and easy to read, with extensive footnotes. Since they are thematic rather than chronological, it's an easy book to dip in and out of, but requires some effort to keep track of the framing dates and events (which makes the timeline provided helpful). A general background in European history of the 16th century would be a pre-requisite for reading this, I think. The colour plates are relevant and reproduced well (though some of the photos look rather old), but weren't directly referenced in the text.

While I found this book a good read and would definitely recommend it, it is not without flaws. Kamen's insistence that Philip must have seen and been inspired by the the monastery complex of Ettal, stating it as fact at times when he admits that there is no direct evidence, sits awkwardly with his critiques of others for sub-standard research and reasoning. Also, Kamen seems more concerned with what the Escorial is not than what it is. Debunking is all very well, and I do like to see it done well as it is here, with frequent reminders of the importance of establishing the basics and going back to primary sources, but it can create a negative feel that makes the reading experience less pleasant than it might have been. This is purely a question of style, I admit, but I find it hard to believe that Kamen couldn't have chosen an approach that would highlight and examine the achievement the Escorial represents, and Philip's motivations for building it, in a more positive way.

The Escorial: Restoring historical balance and correcting the myths

I visited Spain and the Escorial in March. I was enchanted and overwhelmed. Before going to Spain I had read several histories and the recent biography of "Isabella, the Warrior Queen", so was fairly familiar with the historical setting. My wife and I spent a day there and still couldn't take it all in. Our guide turned me onto the works of Henry Kamen, certainly the preeminent contemporary historian of Spain. His "Spanish Inquisition," "Phillip of Spain" and "Empire: How Spain Became a World Power, 1492-1763" are all wonderful reads and each spends an appropriate amount of copy correcting the centuries old misinformation about Felipe II, but none does it quite as well as he is able to do in addressing the inextricably intertwined subjects of the Escorial and the man who created it.

A tremendous amount of mythology has also grown up around the Escorial. Much of it is related to the conjecture about Felipe II and his motivations in its construction. Most of it is negative. There is so much misinformation that it seems like it would be an overwhelming task to address it and essentially correct the “historical” record, but Kamen does it quite successfully.

Kamen comes across as an excellent modern reporter relying heavily on a reporter’s natural inclination toward skepticism. He is simply asking those historians and historical figures who have been so quick to express opinions based on nothing more than erroneous intuition, “Show me the evidence!” Then he points out that there is none and the errors usually are contradicted by the facts.

One of the best books I've ever read

One of the best books I've ever read. Clearly shows that class is still an issue in the U.S. and shows how coalitions form. Also shows how problems have surfaced in the unions....especially interesting that unions did not band together to oppose Reagan's firing of the Air Traffic Controllers.
Just a damn good book.
Read it and you'll learn a lot!

"Other Primary Structures", at the Jewish Museum, probably is –for the genre appreciators like myself– one of the interesting exhibitions so far this year; (along with Carl Andre’s retrospective at DIA: Beacon). It takes its curatorial approach as a look into the past, more specifically to the "Primary Structures" show placed at the Jewish Museum in the mid-sixties, which exposed a series of UK and North-American artists working in an aesthetic that some years later was coined as Minimalism.

Both Curator and Museum worked now in a way to complete and update the list of “main and original authors” that became intrinsically connected with the style’s foundation. Looking globally into artists contemporary to the ones originally presented at “Primary Structures”, the Curator selected similar approaches occurring back then elsewhere in the world, from Latin America to Africa and Asia, showing that Minimalism or geometric art wasn't a prerogative exclusively Anglo-Saxon, both in guidance and influence. Minimal pieces were, in fact, part of the Russian-French axis of European art production in the first half of the 20th Century.

This new edition reproduces the original catalogue, [volume one], paired now with all the projects of the Other Primary Structures, [volume two].
It’s not an art edition per se, with “beautiful” color shots of the pieces etc based in nowadays patterns – but it’s a great archive edition, absolutely recommendable. In other words, a great catalogue.

About the Author
Giacomo Leopardi (1798–1837) was a prolific writer, translator, and thinker in Italy during the years of European upheaval that followed the French Revolution. He became a fluent translator of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, earned high regard as the “first modern Italian classic poet,” and is also esteemed for his diverse prose work. Tim Parks is the author of fifteen novels, including Europa, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize; four acclaimed memoirs of life in contemporary Italy; and other nonfiction works. He runs a postgraduate degree program in translation at IULM University in Milan and has translated works by Moravia, Calvino, Calasso, Machiavelli, and numerous others.

About the Author

Jerrilynn D. Dodds is distinguished professor and senior faculty advisor to the provost for undergraduate education, City College of New York. She lives in New York City. María Rosa Menocal is director, Whitney Humanities Center, and Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University. Her previous book, The Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews, and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain, has been translated into seven languages. She lives in New York City. Abigail Krasner Balbale is a candidate for the Ph.D. in history and Middle Eastern studies at Harvard University, where she focuses on the cultural history of medieval Iberia. This is her first book.

The book many of us have been waiting for

In The Arts of Intimacy, Dodds, Menocal, and Balbale document and analyze the collision/fusion of Muslim, Christian (indigenous Mozarabic and Roman), and Jewish cultures in the architecture, literature, decorative arts, and linguistics of medieval Spain. They focus on Toledo, which, as a city on the border between the Christian and Muslim worlds, was a microcosm of the evolution taking place all over the peninsula.

This is a terrific book, beautiful to look at (almost but not quite a coffee-table book), well-organized, nicely-written, and full of wondrous detail and provocative thinking. For those interested in learning more about this subject, the 57-page annotated bibliography "Sources and Readings" is alone worth the price of the book.

If you are one of those who thought Menocal's The Ornament of the World presented a simplistic, utopian view of the period, this book is the antidote. The detail is lavish in support of the theses and there is no attempt to gloss over the many ugly lapses of La Convivencia.

If anything, The Arts of Intimacy argues against any simplistic or reductionist approach to the development of Iberian culture. Esthetic influences were as fluid and multidimensional as political alliances, and in many cases religion turns out to be the least useful tool of explanation.

Get the book. Look at the photographs. Read the poems. Absorb and reflect on the hundreds of examples of cross-cultural influence. I promise you a worthwhile journey.

Been eagerly awaiting this and am glad to see it in print. It is rich in its interdisciplinary breadth, the evocative descriptions of places and explanations of society, and the complex ways that it traverses the ethnicities, religions, and politics of medieval Spain. Excellent text for classes in medieval art, literary, and cultural history, but also highly recommended for enthusiasts of al-Andalus and Spain. For example, this would be a great book to read prior to traveling to Spain.

How Cultures Interact

Intimacy here means close contact between communities - in this case, Muslims, Christians and Jews in medieval Spain. It took almost 800 fitful, fractious years for the small Christian kingdoms of Iberia to join forces and recapture the peninsula from the Muslims. In this original, thoughtful study, the authors show how cultures interact and cross-fertilize despite themselves.

The tolerance of Umayyad Spain, and the cultural efflorescence it produced, lived on for centuries after Muslim-ruled cities - like Cordoba, Seville and especially Toledo -- were conquered and assimilated by Castile and its allies. We are all familiar with the period of Christian religious paranoia and doctrinal rigidity that led to expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 and the removal of Muslims and Moriscos over the next century.

What is less well known is how the evolving culture and arts of Castile, particularly from the 11th-14th centuries, were influenced and molded by the achievements of Spanish Muslims and Jews.

Alfonso VI, conqueror of Toledo, styled himself "king of the two religions" (Christianity and Islam). His most difficult task was not governing Muslims, the backbone of the city's economy, but rather ruling the Mozarabs, local Arabized Christians who chafed under the control of Latin clergy sent by Rome. Alfonso admired Muslim culture -- the surviving Christian architecture, with its horseshoe arches, Arabic inscriptions and other Muslim features, reveals as much.

Centuries later, Alfonso X, the Wise, who spoke Arabic and read its classics, presided over a Castilian cultural renaissance, overseeing the development of written Romance (later called Spanish) as an equal of Latin and Arabic, ushering in a rich, secular Romance literature that borrowed frame tales from the East, and promoting translation of great Arabic works for European scholars. Muslim and Hebrew traits became inextricable strands of the evolving Castilian culture.

This book is impressively illustrated and features an in-depth, and very useful, bibliographic essay.

Laden with works of art acquired by young British travelers on the Grand Tour in Italy, the British merchant ship Westmorland sailed from the Italian port of Livorno before being captured by French naval vessels and escorted to Malaga in southern Spain. The artistic treasures on board were purchased by King Carlos III of Spain, and the majority were deposited in the collections of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. There they resided, unknown, until recent research, using original inventories that survive in the Academia's archives, identified the Westmorland's rich cargo.

The English Prize reveals the gripping story of the ship's capture and the disposition of its artistic contents, which included Raphael Mengs's Perseus and Andromeda, Pompeo Batoni's portraits of Frances Bassett and Lord Lewisham, and watercolors by John Robert Cozens. This volume illuminates the cultural phenomenon of the Grand Tour and the young travelers who acquired the trove of books and art works on board the Westmorland but were never able to enjoy their purchases.

Like her brave-hearted predecessor, Madani's modern-day Scheherazade is fighting for her own life as well as the lives of her fellow sufferers. But in today's world, the threat comes as much from poverty, official corruption, the abuse of human rights, and the lingering effects of colonialism as from the power wielded by individual men. Madani weaves a tale of contemporary resistance, and once again language provides a potent weapon.

About the Author

Rachida Madani, a native of Morocco, has published several volumes of poetry in French, a language she taught for thirty years. A lifelong political militant, she expresses her resistance "not by shouting slogans and waving banners. I fight with my words." She lives in Tangiers. Marilyn Hacker is a poet, translator, and critic. For her work she has received a National Book Award, a PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, and a PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry, among other prizes. She lives in Paris.

This is a great book of poetry

This is a great book of poetry. It's got the original poetry printed on the left with an English translation on the right.

My only question for Amazon is why this is listed under Native American work when its clearly poetry from a woman of the Maghreb.
