Late nineteenth-century Britain experienced an explosion of interest in sculpture. Sculptors of the “New Sculpture” movement sought a new direction and a modern idiom for their art. This book analyzes for the first time the art-theoretical concerns of the late-Victorian sculptors, focusing on their attitudes toward representation of the human body. David J. Getsy uncovers a previously unrecognized sophistication in the New Sculpture through close study of works by key figures in the movement: Frederic Leighton, Alfred Gilbert, Hamo Thornycroft, Edward Onslow Ford, and James Havard Thomas.
These artists sought to activate and animate the conventional format of the ideal statue so that it would convincingly stand in for both a living body and an ideal image. Getsy demonstrates the conceptual complexity of the New Sculptors and places their concerns within the larger framework of modern sculpture.

About the Author
David J. Getsy is the Goldabelle McComb Finn Distinguished Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is also the author of Abstract Bodies: Sixties Sculpture in the Expanded Field of Gender (Yale 2015) and Rodin: Sex and the Making of Modern Sculpture (Yale 2010). He is the editor of Queer for the Whitechapel Gallery's "Documents of Contemporary Art" book series (MIT Press, 2016); Scott Burton: Collected Writings on Art and Performance, 1965-1975 (Soberscove 2012); From Diversion to Subversion: Games, Play, and Twentieth-Century Art (Penn State 2011); and Sculpture and the Pursuit of a Modern Idealin Britain, c.1880-1930 (Ashgate 2004).

Brilliant analysis of a neglected and misunderstood art movement

Superb critical treatment of this often forgotten and widely misunderstood era in sculpture. Because the styles derived from Classicism were so definitively cut off by the collapse of Beaux Arts building during the rise of Modernism, with the exception of Rodin's work, non-Modernist late 19th and Early 20th C. sculpture tends to get short-shrift in art history. This is despite the astounding artistic fertility of the time. Never in history was so much work produced, or styles evolve so rapidly and diversely. This book aims to correct that gap for the British contingent in this forgotten revolutionary moment. The borders on being for specialists, but is still accessible to the general reader. Very well illustrated and readable.
