The Arts of Intimacy: Christians, Jews and Muslims in the Making of Castilian Culture, by Jerrilynn D. Dodds, Maria Rosa Menocal, Abigail

This splendidly illustrated book is a history of medieval Castile from the 11th to 14th centuries, told from a largely cultural standpoint. Whilst the political narrative of these centuries may emphasise war and intolerance - the inexorable forward march of the reconquista, the authors argue that the cultural record tells a very different story. They emphasise the concept of hybridisation, and show how interaction rather than antagonism more often informed cultural transactions between Christians, Muslims and Jews in the great cities of the region, focusing on Toledo, Seville and Cordoba. The extraordinary architecture of the region receives probably the most attention, but none of the visual arts miss out, and there are also extensive discussions and translations of the poetry and written culture of the three communities. A beautiful testament to a unique artistic culture, and an engaging presentation of the growing argument for a surpringly mixed cultural world.

Review
“The art, the architecture, and the poetry produced in the medieval Iberian peninsula are of such astonishing quality that a survey, especially when it is as intelligent and well presented as this one, can hardly fail both to illuminate and instruct.” –J.H. Elliott, New York Review of Books (J.H. Elliott New York Review of Books 2009-08-13)

"Jerrilynn D.Dodds’, Maria Rosa Menocal and Abigail Krasner’s Balbale’s Arts of Intimacy: Christians, Jews, and Muslims in the Making of Castilian Culture stands out in every respect: it is challenging, thorough, and compelling. Its importance lies in conveying the unique cultural and linguistic polyphony of the nascent Castilian culture. Iconographic testimonies from architecture, epigraphy and calligraphy orchestrate the historical voices expressed in an unprecedentedly rich multilingual poetry. A startling and provocative book that puts an end to any essentialist claim to be laid on this exceptional part of Europe."—Angelika Neuwirth (Angelika Neuwirth)

"A delightful blend of poetry and solid science. How a nation was born out of fascination for the enemy it was victoriously fighting, gaining momentum 'with each meal shared, or bridle admired, each textile or ivory box received in tribute', and with each story told."—Gabriel Martinez-Gros
(Gabriel Martinez-Gros)

"All Medievalists should welcome and treasure this splendid book. Here we see, in an innovative and eminently convincing perspective, the unique phenomenon of medieval Iberia, as a collaborative and also as a conflictive creation of Castilians belonging to the three religions. As much for scholars interested in literature and language, as for those concerned with art and architecture, this book will be 'must' reading. Dodds, Menocal, and Krasner Balbale deserve our thanks and our congratulations."—Samuel G. Armistead

“The Arts of Intimacy creates a composite close-up of a part of Spain usually associated with rock-solid Catholic oppression and authority…explored here subtly and richly.”--Times Literary Supplement
(Marina Warner Times Literary Supplement 2009-11-27)

“The compelling story of the complex entangling of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish history, culture, literature and art in medieval Iberia has been told many times before…But it has never been told like this…A rich tapestry of a book that brings to vivid life the dialectic of acculturation and assimilation in which medieval Spain’s three religious groups were enmeshed.”--Jill Ross, Times Higher Education (UK)
(Jill Ross Times Higher Education (UK) 2009-09-03)

“…beautiful and gorgeously illustrated. . . .this is a fascinating trawl through a forgotten time.”--Catholic Herald
(Catholic Herald)

"Richly illustrated. . . . Deliberately accessible. . . . Through its clear narrative and its elegant style , and thanks to its affordable price, Arts of Intimacy works to render a fascinating and complex topic more widely accessible to a general readership."—Andrea Weisl-Shaw, Medium Aevum (Andrea Weisl-Shaw Medium Aevum)

"Beautifully written and lavishly illustrated, the book represents a distinguished contribution to our understanding of the cosmopolitan world of medieval Iberia."--Catholic Historical Review
(Catholic Historical Review)

"[The Arts of Intimacy] unfolds as a complex interlacing of literary, visual, and historical evidence that challenges the idealized notion of medieval Iberian convivencia, or peaceful coexistence, with nuanced interpretations of crossdisciplinary evidence. The text's high points are thoroughly enjoyable."—María Judith Feliciano, Speculum--A Journal of Medieval Studies (María Judith Feliciano Speculum--A Journal of Medieval Studies)

The book many of us have been waiting for
By Dennis Waters
In The Arts of Intimacy, Dodds, Menocal, and Balbale document and analyze the collision/fusion of Muslim, Christian (indigenous Mozarabic and Roman), and Jewish cultures in the architecture, literature, decorative arts, and linguistics of medieval Spain. They focus on Toledo, which, as a city on the border between the Christian and Muslim worlds, was a microcosm of the evolution taking place all over the peninsula.

This is a terrific book, beautiful to look at (almost but not quite a coffee-table book), well-organized, nicely-written, and full of wondrous detail and provocative thinking. For those interested in learning more about this subject, the 57-page annotated bibliography "Sources and Readings" is alone worth the price of the book.

If you are one of those who thought Menocal's The Ornament of the World presented a simplistic, utopian view of the period, this book is the antidote. The detail is lavish in support of the theses and there is no attempt to gloss over the many ugly lapses of La Convivencia.

If anything, The Arts of Intimacy argues against any simplistic or reductionist approach to the development of Iberian culture. Esthetic influences were as fluid and multidimensional as political alliances, and in many cases religion turns out to be the least useful tool of explanation.

Get the book. Look at the photographs. Read the poems. Absorb and reflect on the hundreds of examples of cross-cultural influence. I promise you a worthwhile journey.

How Cultures Interact
By Robert Lebling
Intimacy here means close contact between communities - in this case, Muslims, Christians and Jews in medieval Spain. It took almost 800 fitful, fractious years for the small Christian kingdoms of Iberia to join forces and recapture the peninsula from the Muslims. In this original, thoughtful study, the authors show how cultures interact and cross-fertilize despite themselves.

The tolerance of Umayyad Spain, and the cultural efflorescence it produced, lived on for centuries after Muslim-ruled cities - like Cordoba, Seville and especially Toledo -- were conquered and assimilated by Castile and its allies. We are all familiar with the period of Christian religious paranoia and doctrinal rigidity that led to expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 and the removal of Muslims and Moriscos over the next century.

What is less well known is how the evolving culture and arts of Castile, particularly from the 11th-14th centuries, were influenced and molded by the achievements of Spanish Muslims and Jews.

Alfonso VI, conqueror of Toledo, styled himself "king of the two religions" (Christianity and Islam). His most difficult task was not governing Muslims, the backbone of the city's economy, but rather ruling the Mozarabs, local Arabized Christians who chafed under the control of Latin clergy sent by Rome. Alfonso admired Muslim culture -- the surviving Christian architecture, with its horseshoe arches, Arabic inscriptions and other Muslim features, reveals as much.

Centuries later, Alfonso X, the Wise, who spoke Arabic and read its classics, presided over a Castilian cultural renaissance, overseeing the development of written Romance (later called Spanish) as an equal of Latin and Arabic, ushering in a rich, secular Romance literature that borrowed frame tales from the East, and promoting translation of great Arabic works for European scholars. Muslim and Hebrew traits became inextricable strands of the evolving Castilian culture.

This book is impressively illustrated and features an in-depth, and very useful, bibliographic essay.

ecumenical or abrahamic sabbath
By Bernardus Hoffschulte
I have read a lot of books about the venerable sabbath, but none of them was - sit venia verbo - as ecumenical as Christopher Ringwald's book on the subject: 'A day apart'. The subtitle of the book - 'How jews, christians, and muslims find faith, freedom, and joy on the sabbath' - evokes a harmony which could greatly benefit the Middle-East from Beirut to Islamabad and from Cairo to Kabul.

Under the same title there is a book by Noam Zion e.a., but this is, with the subtitle 'Shabbat at home', really a jewish how-to-do-book rather than a pioneering study like the book of Ringwald. He describes the historical and spiritual interrelations of the three abrahamic days of rest and worship with a lot of information which has never been brought together in one book before. He also describes his personal impressions of abrahamic co-existence in his own environment in the USA, without even suggesting that one of those days is better than the other. The book is a happy mix of good scholarly research and personal testimony, highly recommended to anyone who is interested in the relations between jews, christians and muslims and, for that matter, in the future of mankind.

Laser-Induced Chemical Processes, by Jeffrey Steinfeld

The possibility of initiating chemical reactions by high-intensity laser exci tation has captured the imagination of chemists and physicists as well as of industrial scientists and the scientifically informed public in general ever since the laser first became available. Initially, great hopes were held that laser-induced chemistry would revolutionize synthetic chemistry, making possible "bond-specific" or "mode-specific" reactions that were impos sible to achieve under thermal equilibrium conditions. Indeed, some of the early work in this area, typically employing high-power continuous-wave sources, was interpreted in just this way. With further investigation, however, a more conservative picture has emerged, with the laser taking its place as one of a number of available methods for initiation of high-energy chemical transformations. Unlike a number of these methods, such as flash photolysis, shock tubes, and electron-beam radiolysis, the laser is capable of a high degree of spatial and molecular localization of deposited energy, which in turn is reflected in such applications as isotope enrichment or localized surface treatments. The use of lasers to initiate chemical processes has led to the discovery of several distinctly new molecular phenomena, foremost among which is that of multiple-photon excitation and dissociation of polyatomic molecules. This research area has received the greatest attention thus far and forms the focus of the present volume.

Hitler's Berlin: Abused City, by Thomas Friedrich

From his first visit to Berlin in 1916, Hitler was preoccupied and fascinated by Germany's great capital city. In this vivid and entirely new account of Hitler's relationship with Berlin, Thomas Friedrich explores how Hitler identified with the city, how his political aspirations were reflected in architectural aspirations for the capital, and how Berlin surprisingly influenced the development of Hitler's political ideas.

A leading expert on the twentieth-century history of Berlin, Friedrich employs new and little-known German sources to track Hitler's attitudes and plans for the city. Even while he despised both the cosmopolitan culture of the Weimar Republic and the profound Jewish influence on the city, Hitler was drawn to the grandiosity of its architecture and its imperial spirit. He dreamed of transforming Berlin into a capital that would reflect his autocracy, and he used the city for such varied purposes as testing his anti-Semitic policies and demonstrating the might of the Third Reich. Illuminating Berlin's burdened years under Nazi subjection, Friedrich offers new understandings of Hitler and his politics, architectural views, and artistic opinions.

The NSDAP in Berlin
By F. Henderson
Thomas Friedrich's book deals, primarily, with the story of the NSDAP in Berlin during the Kampfzeit ("Time of Struggle"). It is clear that considerable research went into this book and the author has produced a highly-readable narrative of this fascinating time.

The book covers a wide range of topics: Hitler's first visit's as a soldier during the Great War, the Kapp Putsch, the rise from mediocrity of the NSDAP in the city, the Stennes Mutiny, etc. A large portion of the story involves Goebbels as he was the Gauleiter of Berlin starting in 1926. The author relies not only on the diary entries of Goebbels but also, and more importantly, the newspapers of the time - at one point there were over 40 in Berlin! It's fascinating to read how some journalists recognized the dangers of the NSDAP yet others completely dismissed it as a political power.

A personal highlight was the telling of the Eden Dance Palace trial in 1931. Four members of the SA were standing trial for an attack on Communist rally that involved the shooting of 3 members of the Communist Party. Hitler was ordered to appear as witness and took the opportunity to launch into long political explanations to any question he was asked. Hans Litten, a young lawyer, proceeded to ask Hitler more concrete questions which led to Hitler becoming flustered on the stand. Unfortunately this episode led to the downfall of Litten, who was arrested after the Reichstag Fire. He eventually committed suicide in Dachau.

The book ran out of steam following the Machtergreifung ("Seizure of Power"). The discussion of the planned redevelopment of Berlin was interesting but seemed out of place given the contents of the rest of the book.

All in all, this was a very good book. I would have liked to have seen more detail in some areas but it works as a general overview of the time

How Hitler Did It!
By Ronald H. Clark
This book turned out to be somewhat different than I had expected from the title. I assumed it would focus on Hitler's views of Berlin, its architecture and urban design, and his plans to scrap a lot of it and create the new world capital of "Germania." Only in the last chapter, pp. 343-372, does the author address Hitler's grand design for Germania and the remaking of Berlin's architecture.

The real focus of this 482 page volume (including notes and index) is how the Nazi party in Berlin in the 1920's, of a few dozen, grew into a force of many thousands with sufficient power to facilitate Hitler's Reichstag victories and eventual appointment by Hindenberg as Chancellor. This is one of the most complete studies I have seen of how the party grew and eventually triumphed.

The surprising central character of the book is Joseph Goebbels, who came to Berlin in 1926 to try and save the infant Berlin party outpost. For the most part, until he becomes Chancellor in 1933, Hitler spent for more time at the party's central headquarters in Munich. Goebbels turns out to have been a master organizer and propagandist, not to mention a skilled public speaker. He utilized both propaganda and mass meetings, and the threat of violence, to raise dramatically the party's public visibility. During the late 20's, there were dozens of right-wing groups, many paramilitary in design, who were plotting to overthrow the Weimar government. Goebbels' task was to get the party to stand out in this confusing mishmash. Large public meetings and the publication of his newspaper "Der Angriff" were especially effective, as was the start of the "cult" of Hitler which fascinated the working classes.

The other big thing the party had going for it was the evolution and incredible growth of the SA Brown Shirts, which came in handy in violence against Communists and Jews, in these wild days in Berlin when street wars were frequent. We start to see how Hitler began to lose control of the SA, with its penchant for violence while Hitler is trying to convince the authorities that he would not take power by force--which he didn't. The famous "Night of the Long Knives" was how Hitler eventually resolve what he had come to see as a threat to his control of the party. Count Helldorf, the Berlin leader of the SA, and close ally of Hitler, is an interesting and new figure to me. Ironically, he later in 1944 participated in the July Plot to kill Hitler and was executed

By 1933, when the party had achieved significant electoral victories, the looming presence of the SA, and its threatening demeanor, obviously played a big role in convincing President Hindenberg to offer the Chancellorship to Hitler. But that familiar story is not the heart of this fine book--rather, how Goebbels built up the Berlin party organization despite fierce competition from other right-wing groups to make it play a key role in the party's ultimate victory has not often been recounted so completely or with such clarity. This book, authored by a native Berlin museum curator and skillfully translated, admirably fills out our understanding of what techniques the Nazis used to take power.

Hitler and the Nazi Movement in Berlin
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'Native Berliner Friedrich, author of several books on the city, such as Berlin: A Photographic Portrait of the Weimar Years, 1918-33, looks at the history of the Nazi movement in German capital that focuses on the period of Hitler's rise to Chancellor in 1933. The work opens with a chapter on Hitler's early contact with the city, notably two visits while on leave during the First World War. This is followed by two chapters on the city, Hitler's early political career and the initial efforts to establish a Nazi presence in the capital (1919-1926). The next eight chapters follow Hitler's relationship with Berlin and the course of the Nazi movement there until he attained the chancellorship in early 1933. A short chapter covers takes the story through the start of World War II, a treatment much too short, given the importance of period. A combination of a political history of Nazism in Berlin and a psychohistory of Hitler's love/hate relationship with the capital, this work will appeal to those interested in Hitler and the Nazi movement, the politics of the Weimar Republic, and the origins of World War II.'

The African Shore (The Margellos World Republic of Letters), by Rodrigo Rey Rosa

A riveting and highly praised novel by Guatemala’s leading writer of fiction, now in English for the first time

In the vein of the writings of Paul Bowles, Paul Theroux, and V. S. Naipaul, The African Shore marks a major new installment in the genre of dystopic travel fiction. Rodrigo Rey Rosa, prominent in today’s Guatemalan literary world and an author of growing international reputation, presents a tale of alienation, misrecognition, and intrigue set in and around Tangier. He weaves a double narrative involving a Colombian tourist pleasurably stranded in Morocco and a young shepherd who dreams of migrating to Spain and of “riches to come.” At the center of their tale is an owl both treasured and coveted.
The author addresses the anxiety, distrust, and potential for violence that characterize the border of all borders: the strait that divides Africa and Europe, where the waters of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet. His often-remarked prose style, at once rich and spare, endows his work with remarkable elegance. Rey Rosa generates a powerful reality within his imagined world, and he maintains a narrative tension to the haunting conclusion, raising small and large questions that linger in the reader’s mind long after the final page.

Review
“Rodrigo Rey Rosa is the most rigorous writer of my generation, the most transparent, the one that knows best how to weave his stories, and the most luminous of all.”—Roberto Bolaño

(Roberto Bolaño)

“Quietly mesmerizing . . . Gray’s unadorned translation, keeping many of the regional exclamations intact, lets the narrative shine, demonstrating why Rey Rosa’s reputation is growing internationally.”—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)

“Rey Rosa creates narratives of mythic proportions.”—San Francisco Chronicle

(San Francisco Chronicle)

“I read Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s The African Shore in a single night. It is a slim volume, only 136 pages, but, more importantly, Rey Rosa is one of the most economical writers I’ve encountered in a long time. The exactitude and concise beauty of his prose illustrates not only what the characters do, but above all, what they see and what they perceive.”—Justin Alvarez, The Paris Review (Justin Alvarez The Paris Review)

“Bolaño wrote that Rey Rosa 'is the most rigorous writer of my generation, the most transparent, the one who knows best how to weave his stories, and the most luminous of all.' Rigorous and luminous, spare and sensual, terse and hilarious, horrifying yet with a poetic, supernatural and metaphysical imagination, his writing—like that found in the novella The African Shore, just out from Yale University Press in Jeffrey Gray’s translation—throws open windows in your mind as you read.”—Francisco Goldman, BOMB (Francisco Goldman BOMB)

“La orilla africana is expertly designed; it raises a series of small and large questions, which relay one another cunningly, maintaining narrative tension up to the haunting conclusion, and indeed beyond . . . It is tempting to call La orilla africana a minimalist novel, because of its scaled-down look, but that would be misleading. Although it systematically avoids emphasis, it touches on large and urgent themes.”—Chris Andrews, The Quarterly Conversation (Chris Andrews The Quarterly Conversation)

“Elegantly written, The African Shore conveys much information about cultures, past and present, along with the people who straddle the worlds of Europe and Africa. . . . Stunning in the simplicity and clarity of its style, this novel says a great deal in very few words, and the ending is perfect.”—Seeing the World Through Books (Seeing the World Through Books)

“Rodrigo Rey Rosa is a Guatemalan novelist whose short, minimalist prose demands being sifted through to uncover layers and interwoven strands that make the reading of The African Shore a rich and intense experience.”—New York Journal of Books (New York Journal of Books)

“A writer whose originality is such that he eludes all precedents or models “—J.A. Masoliver Ródenas, La Vanguardia

(J.A. Masoliver Ródenas La Vanguardia)

“[Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s] work is extraordinarily precise, mythic, and intriguing; it’s literature without useless gestures, where beauty seems to be born of its author’s curious inclination towards silence.”—Raphaëlle Rérolle, Le Monde

(Raphaëlle Rérolle Le Monde)

“[Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s] prose is almost elliptical, full of sharp turns immersed in fleeting sensory, impressionistic shadows.”—Claude-Michel Cluny, Le Figaro Litteraire

(Claude-Michel Cluny Le Figaro Litteraire)

“Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s prose, dense and precise, shows his literary relationship to legendary writer Paul Bowles.”—Der Spiegel

(Der Spiegel)

“A colossal writer in the Spanish language who, with the prodigious exactitude of his prose and the mathematic equilibrium of his narratives, draws from an abundance of techniques amplified by true talent.” —Javier Aparicio Maydeu, El Periódico

(Javier Aparicio Maydeu El Periódico)

“A rare novel—perfectly executed, inhabited both by poetry and by silence—which must be included among the greatest work of a great novelist.” —Luis Alonso Girgado, El Correo Gallego

(Luis Alonso Girgado El Correo Gallego)

“The novel has a clear and beautiful style, achieved through an appearance of sensuality—an equilibrium at once erotic and ascetic.” —Sergio González Rodríguez, Reforma

(Sergio González Rodríguez Reforma)

“The Guatemalan writer focuses his energy, certainly, on the subtle elements of his style: the speed, exactitude and concise beauty of his prose, combined with the elliptical flow of his narratives, continue to recommend him as a young master in the art of saying more with less.”—Gustavo Guerrero, Letras Libres

(Gustavo Guerrero Letras Libres)

“Evocative, even moving. . . . The African Shore is quite gripping.”—The Complete Review (The Complete Review)

“The African Shore practically demands to be read. It is a contemporary tale of international encounters in cosmopolitan, but substantially transformed Tangier, which leaves us thinking and wondering. Anyone who has spent significant time in Morocco will recognize the world that Rey Rosa evokes in his wonderfully frugal prose. And those who have not will enter into a foreign world and encounter a beautiful story that defies full comprehension. Both will leave the land of The African Shore changed.”—The Quarterly Conversation (The Quarterly Conversation)

“The book reads like a vivid dream seen through an opium haze, and sentence-by-sentence, is beautiful.”—Three Percent (Three Percent)

“A dark and intriguing travelogue.”—World Literature Today (World Literature Today)

"Exquisite . . . The North African setting (including Gibraltar) is as vivid and as enervating as the writings of Rey Rosa’s mentor.  I’ve been a fan of Bowles and Rey Rosa for years, especially the latter’s stories. It’s a pleasure to read this longer narrative . . . skillfully translated by Jeffrey Gray."—Charles R. Larson, Counterpunch (Charles R. Larson Counterpunch)

"Simple, elegant, and surprising . . . Rey Rosa was a protégé of Paul Bowles’s and, though many of Rey Rosa’s books are set in his home country of Guatemala, this one takes place in Tangier, which is textured, meandering, and dreamlike, as if seen through an opium haze."—Sarah Gerard, Vol. 1 Brooklyn (Sarah Gerard Vol. 1 Brooklyn)

"Poor thing," said the doctor. "I don't think she'll fly again."
By Mary Whipple
(4.5 stars) Though he has been lauded by Roberto Bolano and many other Latin American authors and critics, Guatemalan author Rodrigo Rey Rosa, has been a well-kept secret to most English-speaking readers. Of his almost two dozen works published to acclaim in Latin America, only four have been published in English, and three of those are translations into English by famed American expatriate author Paul Bowles, who was Rey Rosa's literary mentor in Morocco. The African Shore, a novella which reflects some of Rey Rosa's experiences in Morocco, sweeps the reader into a world in which some aspects of European culture still remain strong in the late 1990s, a generation after the French and Spanish protectorates were nullified. The vibrant mix of cultures contributes to a Moroccan society which is magical, elusive, mysterious - and even haunting - but which is also filled with ominous hints of a changed future.

In three separate sections, three characters express their points of view and live independent lives which occationally overlap with other lives within the book. Here Rey Rosa reveals his characters so carefully that each section can stand alone as a short story or novella. Part I takes place in the rural countryside and features Hamsa, a young shepherd whose vision of the world is colored by local superstition, a belief in animism, and a long history filled with traditions. In the second section, a Colombian who has lost his passport, prepares to apply for a new one in Tangier. Through his eyes, the role of the Sultan, the culture of the city in which women resort to prostitution to gain dowry money, and the lively local drug culture are all revealed. Part III focuses on Laura, the Colombian's wife, who has remained behind in Cali, as she describes the red tape regarding his missing passport and wonders if her husband plans to return to his job there.

Elegantly written, The African Shore conveys much information about cultures, past and present, along with the people who straddle the worlds of Europe and Africa. The animism of the rural farmers, which infuses their lives with magical explanations; the Muslim culture, which provides comfort and identity to large numbers of people from all levels of society; and the criminality which seems to be filling a vacuum in the wake of the country's independence from Spain and France, all play a role in the imagery and symbolism which connects the many facets of this marvelous work. An owl with a wounded wing, which appears separately to each of the main characters, unifies all parts of the novel. The theme of change is tied to nature, its seasons, and its extremes, at the same time that it often originates in human nature, with all its urges and constraints, both personal and cultural.

Rey Rosa's writing is concise and clear, and the ending is perfect, a darkly ironic scene which reveals more about the separate cultures sharing space in Morocco than any sociological treatise could possibly convey. As the shepherd Hamsa tries to reach a bargain with a wealthy Christian woman who wants to buy "his" owl, all the twists of fate and all the ironies involved in these characters' separate lives converge, with only the owl having the perspective to see the world for what it is.

Short sharp "prose-poems" - linked through and owl
By TonyMess
The African Shore came in for special mention at the Best Translated Book Award in 2014 with the judges noting:

We found Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s short novel The African Shore, masterfully translated by Jeffrey Gray, to be almost the perfect counterpoint to Seiobo There Below. In its sonnet-like perfection, even a single out-of-place word would have marred this novel’s hypnotizing effect, so due praise must be given to Rey Rosa and Gray for presenting us with this seamless, engrossing story. We also admired the strange logic by which Rey Rosa’s book functions, telling two parallel narratives that are connected by that strange symbolic creature, the owl. The African Shore felt very much to us like a story that only Rey Rosa could have told, a small, perfectly cut jewel that we can stare into endlessly. It is emblematic of the very rich exchange between Rey Rosa’s native Guatemala and the Morocco in which he lived for a decade, and its minimalist aesthetic points us toward an interesting new direction for Latin American literature to follow in the new century.

American composer, translator and writer Paul Bowles translated a number of Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s works into English as well as having his works translated by Rey Rosa. As a resident of Tangier for over fifty years, the setting of this novel in Morocco is a significant homage to his mentor. Paul Bowles himself recalled his first meeting of Rey Rosa in 1980 at a “creative writing” workshop at the American School of Tangier.

The youngest of the class was a Guatemalan, who wrote in Spanish. He had a fertile imagination, and used it to invent situations which were generally sinister. His texts were very short, often mere scenes or prose-poems of atmosphere, rather than tales, but all of them showed a power of invention capable of creating truly original situations.

“The African Shore” is one of those “truly original situations”, with short, sharp sections (“prose-poems”), we have a tale of a shepherd and an unnamed Columbian tourist, linked together through the fate of an owl. A great example of the short scene in use is where the shepherd invites a small boy into his tent:

The Edge of Reason: A Rational Skeptic in an Irrational World, by Julian Baggini

An urgent defense of reason, the essential method for resolving—or even discussing—divisive issues

Reason, long held as the highest human achievement, is under siege. According to Aristotle, the capacity for reason sets us apart from other animals, yet today it has ceased to be a universally admired faculty. Rationality and reason have become political, disputed concepts, subject to easy dismissal.

Julian Baggini argues eloquently that we must recover our reason and reassess its proper place, neither too highly exalted nor completely maligned. Rationality does not require a sterile, scientistic worldview, it simply involves the application of critical thinking wherever thinking is needed. Addressing such major areas of debate as religion, science, politics, psychology, and economics, the author calls for commitment to the notion of a “community of reason,” where disagreements are settled by debate and discussion, not brute force or political power. Baggini's insightful book celebrates the power of reason, our best hope—indeed our only hope—for dealing with the intractable quagmires of our time.

Review
“A thoughtful analysis for hyper-emotional times.”—Nature  (Nature 2016-09-22)

“Baggini, who has one foot in the academic world of philosophy, another in the world of journalism, expertly straddles the abstract and the practical… Blending lucidity and passion, Baggini shows how much richer and more varied reason is than often supposed. Ultimately, he reminds us, the outcome of our reasonings has to depend not on objective truth but on what “we feel compelled to accept as objective.”—Jane O’Grady, Financial Times (Jane O'Grady Financial Times 2016-09-23)

From the Author
In what ways should we be skeptical about reason?
Philosophers have often aspired to establish all the knowledge we need to understand ourselves, the world, and how to live on certain facts and principles of logic alone. That is a failed project.

Why do you think reason is so under siege today?
Reason was elevated on too high a pedestal, and when that became evident, we became disillusioned. Our mistake now is to think that because reason is not such a regal emperor, it therefore has no clothes at all.

Why is reason often seen as cold and dispassionate?
Because it is characterized only by its most impersonal aspects, exemplified by natural science. This is too narrow. Scientific reason is a form of reason, and a very powerful one, but it does not provide the model that all other reasoning should follow. We reason whenever we seek objective grounds for our beliefs, and there is no reason why these grounds should not include truths about our desires and emotional needs.

What role should reason play in our lives?
Personally, reason is what enables us to reflect on our goals, desires, and values and check that they are not mistaken or misguided. Politically, it is only by using the common currency of reason that we can resolve our differences and live together peacefully.

Magnificent effort, but too "thin" to succeed . . .
By Amazon Customer
Do you know the old joke about the guy who was so skinny? How skinny was he? He was so skinny that if he turned sideways, he would disappear. I fear that this is what has happened to Baggini's conception of "reason." His "thin" conception of "reason" is there, barely, but if you look at it closely or from a slightly different angle, it just disappears.

Nevertheless, I give this book 4 stars. I heartily recommend it. Why not 5 stars? Sometimes the best way to appreciate an argument is not to try and defend it, but to do all you can to refute it. This is what Baggini is up to in this book. "Reason" has fallen on hard times in philosophy and culture. Baggini is out to rescue it. In the opening line to his introduction, he says, "We have lost our reason, . . . the contemporary West has become more and more dismissive of the power of reason." p. 1. The entire book is an effort to refute "the outre dismissals of reason that have become the new common sense." Id. I am for Bagginni here and all those like him; however, he fails. Nonetheless, it is a magnificent failure. From this failure we can see the force of all those "outre dismissals of reason" and finally come to grips with what we must do next.

Bagginni bemoans the loss of "reason." He sees why we need it, much like some see why we need God. However, in the end, Baggini cannot prove the existence of "reason." His conception is, he admits, a "thin" one. Alas, it is so "thin" that it just disappears.

At the end of the book, Baggini gives us a "user's guide to reason." It is a 52 point - that's right only 52 points that you have to know and keep handy - guide to help you be reasonable in all things. It's like a Luther's Small Catechism of "reason," except it's Baggini's. The problem with all of this is that by the end you have the sinking feeling that the "outre dismissals of reason" have been fully justified. The concept is hollow. The "reason" that is defended is not going to rescue us from any serious problem. It is just not up to the task. Ok, maybe something is there, but it's so "thin" that you can't see it when it turns sideways, and if a decent wind of passion or emotion comes along "reason" will surely blow away.

The book deserves 4 stars and should be read, because it offers the best argument for a "thin" conception of "reason," and that argument fails. We need to come to grips with the consequences. What does this mean, exactly? Where are we in a society that so desperately needs not merely "reason" but "REASON"? Did we get rid of God to quickly? Is the ship finally on the shoals? No doubt we "need" reason, just like we need God. But, is it there? Is it real? Is there anything of substance to the notion of "reason" (emphasis now on the little "r").

Needing something doesn't make it true or real. It's back to the drawing board!

The Medieval Haggadah: Art, Narrative, and Religious Imagination, by Marc Michael Epstein

In this beautifully illustrated book, historian Marc Michael Epstein explores four magnificent and enigmatic illuminated haggadot—manuscripts created for use at home services on Passover. They include the earliest known surviving illuminated haggadah: the Birds' Head Haggadah, made in Mainz around 1300, in which many of the faces on the human figures depicted throughout are replaced with those of birds. Also presented is the Golden Haggadah from Barcelona, c. 1320-30, along with two Spanish "siblings," the Rylands Haggadah and its purported Brother, made between 1330 and 1340, which share similar iconography and style.

Though the importance of these manuscripts is universally acknowledged, Epstein examines them with fresh and creative eyes, offering insightful solutions to long-unresolved questions concerning the meaning of the art contained within them. In addition, he uses these treasured volumes as a springboard to address broader issues in the study of Jewish thought and culture.

Intellectual adventures illustrated
By Buda Zsofia
Marc Epstein's new book is outstanding in more than one sense. Its revolutionarily fresh approach to medieval Jewish visual culture is paired with an entertaining style and magnificent, high quality images, and all this at an affordable price.
The author examines the illustrations of four medieval Haggadot of the fourteenth century: the Birds' Head Haggadah, the Golden Haggadah, the Rylands and the "Brother" Haggadot. His innovative analysis oversteps the frames of traditional art history and takes the reader on an intellectual voyage through the realm of medieval Jewish-Christian dialogue. Marc Epstein points out how the Jewish authorship of these Haggadot used the visual medium to express theological and social ideas, and to respond to historical events. Reading the book, one discovers that book illumination and visual culture in general is able to open a new window and offer a fresh perspective on Jewish-Christian coexistence in the Middle Ages, and to shed light on certain aspects that are not palpable through written sources.
This book is much more than a monograph of four Haggadot. Just as his previous work, Dreams of Subversion in Medieval Jewish art and Literature (Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania State University Press, 1997), Marc Michael Epstein's recent book is the foundation of a new methodology for studying Jewish visual culture as a creative and responsive medium which is able, and was indeed used, to express genuine Jewish ideas, rather than as a merely imitative or second-rate field compared to Christian art. Thanks to its clear and literary style, the book speaks to a much wider audience than a small circle of experts on Jewish art. Great enjoyment for the mind and the eyes!

An invitation to conversation
By mathteamjock
This book provides an unmissable window into the world of medieval Jewish manuscript illumination. Like any good writer, Epstein makes a subject that might not initially have drawn my attention nothing less than fascinating. Where some might see oddly-drawn figures and a lack of artistic refinement, Epstein sees complicated illuminated manuscripts that shed light on the myriad ways that medieval Jews read and re-read the classic narrative of the Haggadah. Epstein's arguments are well-constructed and never boring; he is unafraid to share bold speculation, but also grounds his work in solid research and close examination of the details of the manuscripts. What comes across most clearly in Epstein's writing is his deep respect for the complexity and self-awareness of the creators of the manuscripts he examines -- and he extends that respect to you, the reader, by providing full-page replicas of the illustrated pages he discusses -- thus openly inviting you to examine them, draw your own conclusions, and add your own voice to the conversation. So, read the book and take the invitation!

Intelligent and Deep
By Seth H. Rosenzweig
I heard Professor Epstein lecture at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles, and he was terrific, so when I got home, I bought the book, sight unseen, and I have to say, it, too, is wonderful--not only beautifully illustrated but also fascinating on many levels, touching on themes of loss, freedom, the role of women in Judaism, and the role of art in the world. He even delves into the cross-pollination between the Jewish and Christian traditions in Medieval religious art. As I said, fascinating stuff, intelligent and deep.
