The Paras were ready to die, fighting, in the best traditions of the maroon berets. Their lives were ultimately saved by Private Freddy Ellis, whose bravery under fire moved his commander on the ground to recommend he be decorated. Sergeant Gordon Robertson was awarded a Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for his leadership during the contact. This was the British BLACKHAWK DOWN. Mark Nicol has travelled back to Iraq to produce the first and only coherent account of the bloodiest day of the British experience in Iraq.

He has excellent contacts in the military, thanks to growing up in Hereford (his father served in the SAS for sixteen years) and his first book, ULTIMATE RISK (Macmillan 2003) described British special forces operations in Afghanistan. In 2004 he visited Iraq to research LAST ROUND.

The inaugural book in a series covering the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Roof Garden commissions, this slender, vibrant volume places Pakistani artist Qureshi at the intersection of several celebrated histories into conversation with contemporary installation and architecture. For the Roof Garden, Qureshi splattered blood-red paint across the roof itself, then painted into these smears an ornate and unreal flora that approaches the sublime. Recalling both violence and contemplation, the painting is uniquely considered in relation to the landscape surrounding the museum. The text places this work alongside Qureshi's previous installations, exploring the images primarily through a long conversation with the artist. He maps his own education with traditional methods of painting and contemporary techniques, in turn illuminating a number of art historical influences on his work. Ultimately, this lands on the political dimensions of the installations, concerned as they are with the violence surrounding them. Evocative in content and brilliant in image, the book pleasantly engages even as it remains clear that there is much more that could be said about Qureshi and the striking beauty of the Roof Garden.

The enjoyment of reviewing this book took a downward spiral after it was discovered that portions of the book were published earlier by the author in Opera on Screen (Sunburst, 1997), even though the introduction to the new volume states "There is no other guide like it."

Entries have been revised from the earlier title, and there are also new entries. The arrangement remains the same, with singers, cities, operas, halls, composers, etc., interfiled in a letter-by-letter alphabetization. Wlaschin also provides subjective entries, such as Best opera on video and Worst opera on film.

Within entries, films are listed chronologically, with a short summary, the cast, timing, format, and distributor included. The breadth of opera is illustrated in entries for Walt Disney and Maurice Sendak. A smattering of musicals, operettas, and even requiems are also mentioned. There are a few black-and-white photos interspersed in the text. Some typographical errors are annoying--Colin Davis (not David), Albert Coates also referred to as Eric Coates (another English composer).

The index cites only people and works. Consequently, one cannot find productions of small opera companies such as the Santa Fe Opera or the Glimmerglass Opera unless the name of the opera is known. A selective bibliography and addresses of DVD and VHS distributors complete the volume.

Academic and public libraries with a strong opera collection should consider this comprehensive, readable encyclopedia, although they may not want to purchase it if they own Opera on Screen. Christine Bulson

This book is a "must buy" for any person interested in opera, operetta, singers, conductors, writers and numerous related topics and its profound effect on the film medium. Whether a connoisseur or professional in the field of opera or screen, this book has it all. You may use this book as a definitive reference, but you will also find it fascinating, entertaining and brilliantly written. There are lots of illustrations. Buy it. You'll love it.
