To understand the fear that the disease had touched, the author faces the reality that his own life had been dominated by internalized anti-Semitism. His is the story of confronting the hatred that can result from constant exposure to the hatred of others. Through examining relationships with other gay men, he argues that anti-Semitism, racism and misogyny are often proportional to the internalization of homophobia.

Gay history written by Important figure

The author is a major figure in gay history, especially for New York. In various chapters on different topics, we learn his autobiography, and the great struggles he endured with his self-realization of being gay, as well as dealing with some discrimination also for being Jewish. Top it all off with the fact that he was a self-described "opera queen" and had been somewhat of a Wagner specialist until analysis and counseling led him to conclude how this love of Wagner was related to self-loathing for being Jewish and gay. I was surprised at this at first, but gradually became convinced that this occurred with him, and it provided me with some insights which I find interesting. He is an accomplished physician who w2as the first to publish in mainstream press warnings about the apparently then-new illness later called AIDS. He became the first medical director of the main AIDS organization serving New York. His eventual lover/partner/husband is Arnie Kantrowitz (Under the Rainbow), himself a writer. They indulged in a kinky side of the New York scene in the 1970's and 1980's that I had heard of, but previously not in such interesting narrative. The brutal honesty of Mass's self-disclosure is praise-worthy and certainly makes for interesting reading.
