Levant: Splendour and Catastrophe on the Mediterranean, by Philip Mansel

'Levant' is a book of cities. It describes the role of Smyrna, Alexandria and Beirut as windows on the world, escapes from nationality and tradition, centres of wealth, pleasure and freedom. By their mix of races and religions, they challenge stereotypes.

(Barnaby Rogerson)

“This book is a labour of love and finely tuned scholarship, ornamented with such telling social detail and intimate knowledge of the urban and social landscapes that it brings 300 years of history to entertaining life…Philip Mansel slowly makes the reader aware that the grand theme of his history is a slow unfolding tragedy which remains absolutely relevant to today’s multicultural societies, engaged as they are in the delicate balancing act between political unity and cosmopolitan diversity…not only an entertainment and a historical education but also something of a political warning…”—Barnaby Rogerson, Times Literary Supplement (Barnaby Rogerson Times Literary Supplement)

Great read on the Levant
By D. Squires
If you are interested in the history of the Levant since about the 1700s, told through the history and more broadly story of its 3 great cities, Alexandria, Beirut, and Symrna, then this is the book for you. Packed with facts and anecdotes, the author presents a sweeping narrative. Any easy and enjoyable read by an incredibly knowledgeable author, the book unites all into a broad and thoughtful perspective. I've lived in the area and read a fair amount, but I learned much that I didn't even know I didn't know and filled in gaps of knowledge and analysis.

Title Does Not Disappoint- There Is Definitely Splendor and Catastrophe In Rich Detail
By lmlm000
In Levant, the author Phillip Mansel looks at three cities: Smyrna (now Izmir), Alexandria, and Beirut and how they came to represent the collision between the western world and the Islamic one, from the eighteenth century up to the twentieth. The three cities, all locations with long, ancient histories gained new economic and cultural life with the advent of European colonial expansion. European forces, hoping to gain a monopoly on trade in these crucial ports, pushed the moribund Ottoman Empire to grant the outsiders valuable economic rights to do business in the region. What followed was three hundred years of intermingling between a variety of different cultures. Many times this clash of cultures led to violence such as murders and riots. But often, this clash also led to unprecedented economic prosperity and an explosion of art, music, and architecture. Mansel looks beyond history dates and events to provide anecdotal stories of these cities and the people who lived in them.

The strength of the book is Mansel's narrative. It keeps the book moving at a comfortable pace, and provides insightful stories of the people of the cities of Smyrna, Alexandria, and Beirut. The book never spends too much time on one point or digresses on tangents. The author refuses to get bogged down in the national politics that all to often impacted city life, he provides a useful explanation but always ties it in back to the subject city.

The organization of the book takes some getting used to as Mansel would frequently spend three chapters on one city only to then switch to another city (chapters 2-3 and 10-12 deals with Smyrna; chapters 4-5, 7-8, 13-14 focus on Alexandria; chapters 6, 9, 15-17 features Beirut). This can be jarring as it forces the reader to take a 100 page break before returning to a particular city. However, this organization ultimately highlights the recurring patterns of cosmopolitanism and nationalism that led to the integration and disintegration of all three cities.

The book is a highly informative read that was part vibrant travel literature of a bygone era and part solemn history of social collapse. The title promises "Splendour and Catastrophe" and that is exactly what the reader gets, in well-researched detail.

Three East Mediterranean cities, that came to grief with Philip Mansel's Eloquently touching book
By Didaskalex
****
"The Mediterranean is a vast expanse, with countless ports and cities, towns and villages; ... to zoom in on a number of the individual places..., and say, why they have always been so special. One of them is Malta, ...Then there is Palermo,...Patmos. just a few...; I could have talked about Taormina, or Delos or Corfu." -- John Julius Norwich

The most concise introduction to the book is wrote by Norman Stone for The Guardian. It is a story that goes back a very long way, as Alexandria lay at the mouth of the Nile, and Smyrna - birthplace of Herodotus - had a superb harbor bay that led straýght to the interior of Anatolia,... Beirut, though also Phoenician and Roman in ancient times, really owed its emergence to the French in the 19th century, when they used the local Christians to establish a semi-colony. In the 19th century, these port cities flourished, and in all of them a European Diaspora settled - Greeks especially, but also Jews, Italians and English, who established dynasties known as "Levantine", with enormous mansions and parks that survive at least in Izmir if not elsewhere.

I share with Patrick Seale his reaction to the moving history of the East Mediterranean cities trio, that came to grief in Philip Mansel's eloquent and touching book, that almost brought tears to my eyes. Mansel wrote a lamentation for a vanished cosmopolitan society which flourished in the century preceding the First World War, only to fall victim to local conflicts, the meddling of foreign powers and nationalist counter reaction. Meticulously analyzed and colorfully told, it describes human misery, intellectual bleeding, residents expulsion on a grand scale that initiated social decline, and political decay.

The Ottoman Empire/ Middle East expert, Eton reared and Oxford educated, came to the final conclusion that, "The Beirut dilemma goes to the heart of the Levant. At certain times ... Levantine cities could find the elixir of coexistence, putting deals before ideals, the needs of the city before the demands of nationalism. Like all cities, however, Levantine cities needed an armed force for protection. ... The very qualities that gave these cities their energy -- freedom and diversity -- also threatened their existence." This has been proven right now, by the evolution of the "Arab Spring". Unrest erupted like a tsunami wave, swept Tunisia, ending sixty years of military control of Egypt, and leaving Libya, and Syria behind in turmoil and civil war.

A Posteriori by the reviewer:

Are Alexandria and Smyrna Levantine?
Levant simply means "where the sun rises" or "where the land rises out of the sea", a meaning attributed to the region's easterly location on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Ancient Egyptians called the Levant Qdem, or Retjenu. Ancient Egyptian texts called the entire area of Mediterranean coast, between Sinai and Anatolia Retjenu. It included three regions, of which the southern region, Djahy, shared the approximate boundaries of Canaan. The Fertile Crescent, coined by James H. Breasted of Chicago Oriental Institute, includes Mesopotamia together with the Levant and became the name most used since then. With Beirut in the center, both Alexandria and little known Smyrna were outside the traditional ancient Levant.

What has Smyrna to do with Alexandria and Beirut?
Smyrna was an ancient city located at a strategic central point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. The ancient city is located at two sites within modern Izmir, Turkey. Its foundation like Alexandria, is associated with Alexander the Great, became a metropolitan city during a period of the Roman Empire, which has ended by an earthquake in the second century AD.
Since I was born in Alexandria, and know very well its ancient and recent history, and likewise visited and admired its clone Beirut, I know fairly well its culture, even the memory of the Shawerma and Mezza revive my taste buds. Would the eminent author has selected Antioch or Constantinople in the trio, I could never have been puzzled. John Julius Norwich, colorful writer and great Byzantine scholar and expert would have supported my preference.

Alexander Calder: The Paris Years, 1926-1933 (Whitney Museum of American Art), by Joan Simon, Brigitte Leal

In 1926, Alexander Calder (1898–1976) moved from New York to Paris and began to use time and motion as "materials" for animating line and space. Calder’s years in Paris––an understudied part of the artist’s career––is the focus of this marvelous publication.

A team of international scholars discusses Calder’s many innovations of this period, chief among them his abstract, motorized, and mobile works. They analyze the extended cast of Calder’s animated Circus, made in Paris between 1926 and 1931, and include previously unpublished photographs by Brassaï and Kertesz of Calder and this beloved performative sculpture. The essays critically explore the intellectual, cultural, and artistic milieu of Paris in the late 1920s and early 1930s and the contexts of Calder’s friendships with Miró, Mondrian, Duchamp, and Man Ray, among others. What emerges in this fascinating book is a nuanced and detailed understanding of how Calder’s distinctive career first took flight.

From Publishers Weekly
Calder, who arrived in Paris in 1926 as an Ashcan School realist painter with a degree in engineering, came into his own there as a central figure of the Modern movement. He became known in avant-garde circles for his wire figures and portraits (many represented here), toys and jewelry. Between 1926 and 1931, he built the 70 figures that compose Calder's Circus, which he displayed through 1961. A visit to Piet Mondrian's studio in 1930 provided a shock that started the abstract explorations that led to the mobiles for which he is best known. Simon and Leal, curators respectively at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Pompidou Center, collect eight essays in this catalogue for an exhibition opening in October at the Whitney; the writings examine Calder as illustrator, surrealist and abstractionist. His Circus is examined in depth by Eleonora Nagy, its conservator, and Henry Petroski, who looking at Calder's engineering background likens the Circus in performance to the workings of an internal combustion engine. Both art professionals and the artist's many fans will find much to appreciate here. 235 color and 87 b&w illus. (Sept.)

Eduardo Barreiros and the Recovery of Spain, by Hugh Thomas

A dramatic biography of the extraordinary Spanish industrialist and entrepreneur Eduardo Barreiros

Born in an impoverished region of Galicia, possessed of little education and less money, Eduardo Barreiros (1919–1992) rose to become an immensely successful entrepreneur and one of Spain’s most prominent industrialists. In this engaging biography, the first on a Spanish entrepreneur in English, Hugh Thomas recounts Barreiros’s origins as an auto mechanic, his success in the motor industry, his tragic alliance with the Chrysler Corporation, and his little-known role as a motor industry founder in 1980s Cuba. Drawing on an unrivaled knowledge of Spanish history, Lord Thomas also brings to light Barreiros’s critical role in the modernization of the Spanish economy in the post–Civil War years.

The book offers a detailed portrait of Don Eduardo’s personality, character, and numerous entrepreneurial endeavors, as well as a full account of the difficulties the Franco-era government threw in the path of his capitalist activities. The relationship between Barreiros and the Chrysler Corporation is also described, along with the failed Dodge Dart project that ultimately cost Barreiros his business. Finally, the book recounts Don Eduardo’s late-in-life efforts to help establish a motor industry in Castro’s Cuba—a paradoxical conclusion for a great capitalist.

Review
“Hugh Thomas has succeeded admirably in linking the story of an individual entrepreneur to the national and international context in which he was operating; the drama of this man is skillfully tied in to the drama of Spain during a tempestuous period in that county’s history.”—Sir Geoffrey Owen, Department of Management, London School of Economics
(Sir Geoffrey Owen)

By Luis Puente Maestu
This is a book about Spain in the era of Franco, In particular about the difficulties of independent entrepreneurs in a state run economy. Franco’s time passed away but government influence in economy is still massive in many European countries, and Spain in particular, and its pernicious influence on creativity and loss of opportunities can be seen on the time mirror in this book. It also relates the overconfident contempt of big companies proud of themselves on local expertise in countries they consider second-rate and how the lack of on the spot know-how is also a cause of failure. The book is easy to read at least for those fond of the Spanish history of the 50’s and 60’s.

Gather Up the Fragments: The Andrews Shaker Collection, by Mario S. De Pillis, Christian Goodwillie

Struck by the beauty of every visible object in a Shaker kitchen they chanced to visit in 1923, young Edward Deming Andrews and his wife, Faith Young Andrews, embarked on a collection that became the passion of their lives. During the following decades, at a time when the art and artifacts of the Shakers were considered “low” art and unworthy of collecting or exhibiting, the Andrewses energetically collected objects, studied sources, and eventually mounted exhibits and published books on Shaker culture.

This beautiful book is the first to document their unparalleled collection, presenting some 600 photographs, most never before published. In addition, the book brings to light the extraordinary story of the Andrewses’ collecting and scholarship, their relationships with members of the United Society of Believers (commonly called Shakers) and with important New York City art-world figures of the 1930s, as well as their contributions toward the birth of the field of Shaker Studies. More than passionate collectors, Edward and Faith Andrews were intent on saving a distinct culture, and their accomplishment was to preserve for future generations the most comprehensive body of knowledge ever assembled about the Shakers.

"It is a story as full of intrigue as an Italian Renaissance poisoning, but the book's real story is still in the engaging simplicity displayed in the pictures."—Antiques (Antiques 2009-01-01)

How a Stubborn Young Man's Defense of the Shakers Proved Prophetic
By David Crumm
You can hardly walk through a mall these days without hearing some form of "Simple Gifts" cycling through the soundtrack. And, the graceful yet functional lines of Shaker-designed furnishings now are mainstays in many American homes. Yet, most Americans know very little about this Utopian group that truly was among the great contributors to our national culture.

If you visit one of the restored historical sites that once housed Shaker families, you're likely to walk away with a paperback like "The People Called Shakers," by Edward Andrews. But, even after reading the paperback, you won't know the larger and far more dramatic story of Andrews' (and his wife Faith Andrews') passion for preserving the art and spiritual message of the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, as the Shakers formally called themselves.

This coffee-table-style book, lavishly illustrated with color photographs, presents that larger story. It's part of a traveling exhibit, drawn from the Andrews collection, which will visit various historical sites over the next couple of years.

The key to the Andrews' contribution really couldn't be properly evaluated until now, I think. As a journalist myself who has specialized in reporting on American religious life for more than 20 years - with a special focus on Shakers through most of those years - I think it's only in this era of "spiritual rebirth" in America that the Andrews' passion and achievements can properly be understood and appreciated.

First of all, "Ted" Andrews began collecting and preserving endangered Shaker pieces in an era when they were considered "low" art at best. So-called experts, when he began to build his collection before World War II, regarded such hand-made, functional items as historical artifacts perhaps worth documenting. The art world was an entire conceptual universe away from its current fascination with such fusions of handicrafts and spiritual insight.

What's more, "Ted" Andrews staunchly believed - in sharp contrast to most developers of historical sites in the mid-20th Century -- that Shaker sites should be preserved primarily for their spiritual value. At least, spiritual themes should be presented on par with gee-whiz exhibitions of artifacts. Initially, this seemed like a crazy notion to many experts and Andrews seemed like a rather bull-headed fellow. But, in today's cultural light, Andrews now appears to have been the prophetic visionary.

If you care about this chapter of American history and this niche within global spirituality, this new Yale University book is a must-own volume on our collective Shaker legacy.

Great Shaker book
By doximom
I have been a shaker collector for many years. I have many books on Shaker and shaker goods. This book is a wonderful addition to my book collection. It has amazing photos and gives excellent renditions of shaker. Educational and entertaining is what makes a good book and this does both. I recently went to see this collection at the museum and that was amazing. Can't wait to visit a Shaker museum community again. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the Shakers and their goods.

The photographs exhibit the craft of the shakers in every detail. The color captured in some of the pieces provided a pleasant surprise!

These delightful stuffed animals are fully dressed collector's toys resembling characters from the children's books of Kenneth Grahame and Beatrix Potter. Dolman's bears, foxes, and rabbits are decked out in Victorian waistcoats, bonnets, and tweeds. Complete instructions and patterns are given for the animals and their clothing. Beaded eyes and costume details make them unsuitable for very young children, but they are sure to be welcomed by older children and adults.

In these forthright essays, key Christian ethicists present opposing views on so-called 'assisted suicide' and 'voluntary euthanasia'. These are then challenged or affirmed in the responses of Christian theologians and professionals from a variety of positions within the churches. The final contribution is a splendid and useful overview by the Roman Catholic moral theologian Jean Porter, from Notre Dame University in the USA.

"[This book] is a thoughtful, learned, and lucid synthesis of Calvinism's beginnings, development, successes, and limits. . . . The Subtitle is a Bit Misleading.
By Collin Garbarino
Thankfully, this book is not social history in the sense that it is concerned with lots of numbers and the lives of non-elites. Instead, Philip Benedict's Christ's Churches Purely Reformed is a magnificent survey of the Reformed movement in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In this work, Benedict discusses both how the movement shaped Europe and how Europe shaped the Reformed movement. The book focuses not only on the main actors and thinkers of this time, but also shows how Reformed thinking affected the everyday lives of those living in the lands in which it took hold.

A reoccurring theme of Christ's Churches Purely Reformed is that Reformed thought is not monolithic. Benedict interestingly asserts that because Reformed thought allowed for a diversity of ecclesiologies, the central ideas disseminated more effectively. This unity among diversity allowed for the various churches in Switzerland, Britain, and France to all claim the same tradition, but have very different manifestations. Notably, the Presbyterian-synod system, which most Reformed churches would later adopt, was developed in France. Thus, from the beginning Reformed theology and ecclesiology was a work in progress. Benedict's discussion of this evolution of the Reformed traditional was helpful because it corrects the myth common among many Reformed denominations that their version of Reformed ecclesiology and manners sprung full-formed from the head of Calvin. However, Benedict notes that even though the differences were often strong, a sense of solidarity and commonality of tradition united the various national churches. "Although the very term Reformed church was infused with ambiguities around 1600, the sense of fellowship and solidarity among these churches was powerful" (291). Most notably, these churches were willing to take communion with one another, the true witness to perceived Christian unity.

Benedict's thoughtful critiques of democracy and capitalism's origins in Calvinism were the high points of this book. Without being dogmatic, Benedict calls into question the supposed connections between these ideologies and the theology. Speaking specifically of Weber's thesis, Benedict writes, "His ideas exaggerate the extent to which they characterized the faith as a whole and attribute them too simply to a single cause" (541). Ultimately he concludes that while one can draw superficial and common-sensical parallels, the evidence for placing democracy and capitalism at the feet of Calvinism is very weak. In fact, Benedict notes that many of the characteristics of the Calvinist mind, which would lead to democracy or capitalism, were also present in the minds of Europeans not engaged in Reformed worship. However, Benedict honestly admits that many of his findings regarding the sociological impact of Calvinism "are more tentative and more likely to be revised by future research" than his historical chronology (432).

In this work, Benedict attempts to strike a scholarly balance between not overemphasizing the importance of the Reformed tradition in Western thought and acknowledging its contribution. He writes, "If the fatal flaw of theories crediting Calvinism with distinctive consequences for economic behavior or political development is that they exaggerate the spillover effects of religious doctrine outside the religious domain, the great shortcoming of the recent emphasis on the parallel consequences of the Lutheran, Reformed, and Catholic Reformations is that it downplays each faith's distinctiveness within the domain of culture and religious life" (544). On the whole, Christ's Churches Purely Reformed is a scholarly contribution which may bring a sense of balance to the field.

Magnificent work of synthesis
By Angus123
I bought this on a recent visit to Geneva, to refresh my memory on the Reformation from theological school days. What an outstanding find. The book is lengthy, as one would expect from a broad review of a disparate movement over a substantial period of time. It remains accessible for any educated reader and generally balances the details with the need to keep the vast material of the subject under control. One of the best features of the book is the author's balance and sensitivity to religious viewpoints and experiences. As a good historical work should do, it leads the reader to feel some of the complexity and human realities of the period, whilst acknowledging the huge cultural gap between the early moderns and contemporaries. For instance, while Calvin's Geneva was clearly a very foreign place to 21st century Westerners, Benedict doesn't render it in simplistic black and white tones. The author also argues for the many positive benefits from the reformed movement, whilst puncturing numerous myths and ideals. Another pleasing aspect of the book is that where data is inadequate, Benedict acknowledges as much and doesn't over-generalize, preferring to stick close to the empirical studies. He interacts unobtrusively with the secondary literature which gives readers an awareness of debates going on behind the scenes without being bogged down in them. Full of insight, nuance, data and historical empathy, this book is very worthwhile for anyone interested in the Reformed movement's historical origins.

The Reformed Branch of Protestantism to 1700
By Frank Bellizzi
Philip Benedict introduces this big impressive book as a survey of “the history and significance of Reformed Protestantism in Europe from its origins until the end of the age of orthodoxy around 1700” (xvii). He points out that no single author has attempted anything similar since John T. McNeill wrote "The History and Character of Calvinism," which was published in 1954. However, says Benedict, since then the broad field of history and also a specific part of that field, the corner known as Reformation studies, have each gone through what he describes as a dramatic sea change. What were those changes?

First, in general, historians no longer report only those events surrounding “elite actors.” Instead, they now incorporate “the actions and aspirations of ordinary men and women.” Second, the half-century following McNeill’s book witnessed what Benedict calls the “deconfessionalization” of Reformation history. He explains that, before, “most church history was written by members of the church in question eager to explore a critical moment in the formation of their religious tradition.” But since then a new scene has emerged where it is not uncommon, for example, for Roman Catholic scholars to offer “sympathetic and penetrating studies of Protestant theology” (xviii). Clearly, Benedict hopes that his book will be a good example of both trends. He not only subtitles his work A Social History of Calvinism, he also describes himself as “a total outsider, an agnostic, nonpracticing Jew raised in a secular household” (xxv). In this regard, the book under review is very different from a much more traditional title like Timothy George, "Theology of the Reformers" (Nashville: Broadman, 1988).

Benedict’s overview of the period follows a four-part outline. In Part I, “The Formation of a Tradition,” the author describes the hectic and disorganized character of the first few decades of Protestantism. He observes that the distinctive Reformed tradition in Protestantism had two beginnings. Huldrych Zwingli led the first. The second was associated with primarily three names: Heinrich Bullinger, Zwingli’s protégé who tirelessly advanced the views of his mentor over a period of forty years, John a Lasco, who played a central role in the propagation of Reformed ideas in East Friesland and also among French and Dutch refugees in London, and, of course, John Calvin, “the most forceful voice within the increasingly multipolar and multivocal Reformed world” (77).

Part II, “The Expansion of a Tradition,” takes up the second half of the sixteenth century, a critical time of remarkable growth, one that turned out to be essential to the future prominence of the Reformed branch of Protestantism. Benedict explains that the dynamism evidenced by the remarkable geographical expansion of Reformed churches in those years arose from an accumulation of specific theological features, organizational attributes, and historical circumstances that all helped the cause win supporters among princes and people alike, then defend itself tenaciously in those instances in which it expanded in defiance of the ruling authorities (124).

This part of the book also examines, in turn, six different regions in which the Reformed tradition was well known during a fifty-year period of historic growth: France, Scotland, the Netherlands, the Holy Roman Empire, England, and Eastern Europe. Benedict notes that between 1554 and 1600, the Reformed branch multiplied in number by a factor of twenty. More than that, for all of the various regional expressions of Reformed Christianity, this loosely organized international group managed to establish and maintain a certain solidarity. The unity of the movement expressed itself through mutual aid in times of distress, personal connections across long distances, consultation on theological questions, and an effort to draft documents that would express a basic consensus.

Part III, “The Transformation of a Tradition,” relates the story of Reformed Protestantism from about 1590 to 1700, “a period of theological ferment of the utmost importance” (298). Benedict says that during this time the tradition became more scholastic, more organized. These were the years, for example, when the doctrine of double predestination was refined, and when the idea of the verbal inerrancy of Scripture was developed as an answer to the counter-Reformation. But in addition to being a time of change from within, the seventeenth century also witnessed the Reformed tradition being challenged from the outside as a result of its sometimes falling into political disfavor. Finally, religious controversy and political upheaval in isolated Great Britain created unique struggles over theology and polity. These generated Anglicanism, Puritanism, and the Church of Scotland.

In Part IV, the most entertaining section of the book, Benedict concludes by describing the practical day-to-day differences that the Reformed tradition brought to the lives of adherents. He deals with three specific topics: ministerial leadership, church discipline, and common piety. Reformed believers appreciated sound biblical scholarship, preaching that brought with it strong conviction, and ministers who were models of Christian attitude and behavior. Along this line, Benedict reminds the reader that anti-clericalism stood at the center of what initially sparked the Reformation as a popular movement. Benedict says that the fragmentary nature of consistory records makes a full description of church discipline difficult. In spite of the sketchy evidence, two things are certain: the Reformed highly valued an actively disciplined church. Yet, it is a mistake to assume that Calvin’s Geneva was typical. In no other place and at no other time did any other presbytery measure up to that standard. Regarding common piety, Benedict observes that Reformed Protestants drastically reduced the number of Catholic holy days and abandoned the abstinence of meat during Lent. Their rhythms were not annual, but weekly: attendance at worship, which strongly focused on the preached Word.

In his “Introduction,” Benedict explains that his agenda for the book includes two specifics. First, he intends to examine Max Weber’s theory announced in "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" (1900), a book that famously associated Calvinism with disciplined work. Second, he wants to test the supposed special connection between the Reformed tradition and modern democracy. As he concludes, Benedict announces his verdict: the evidence disproves both ideas, though they are still widely accepted.

I gave this book five stars because it is a first-rate piece of work, a fine reference that will serve students and scholars for many years to come.
