generous idea, some banal contributions

Williams - Tsien generous idea of including friends, mentors and followers - most famous, some obscure - in their own project in a newly discovered building, or so they say. Starchitects are so pressed to produce intelligent contributions for so many different public showings, from cook books to ersatz collections that I'm amazed they can still submit something intelligent/ intelligible. I have to admit I am always curious of what these bright busy people can put together. Well, the case is that some submissions are simple and down to the point, some are far out and clueless. The book shows them in supposedly clear way which somehow got indecipherable. Some are a strarchitec ego trip, some about their own heroes and mentors, like a box within a box within a box. Apart from a familiar USA lineup, there's also great guys like Bijoy Jain, Diller, Scofidio, Renfro, Juhani Pallasmaa, Murcutt, Martinez Lapeña y Torres, but who's Luce? and Iino? Like the insight this filling of a box implies, the submissions are mostly very intimate, private. It's another peep show....

"Objects are our ballast"

Open-hearted, often funny, generally playful and pursued in the spirit of curiosity, the boxes of Tsien and Williams's Wunderkammer project for the Venice Biennale are themselves collected in this book. Even the book's trim size is reminiscent of the box shape each architect/artist/collector was given to work with. It's a variation on a theme of creative minds, and each contribution is presented both as final outcome and in process shots and sketches. Memento mori, portals of identity, poetic expressions of self, the sensory, textural, imaginative, the intimate, or the made, the boxes show the artist's fixation--Luce's lifelong exploration of "beauty," Mayer's reworking of movement and schemes of previous projects, Baird's or Ito's touchstones, for example--or show the well-practiced compulsion to rework space, whether through reconstruction, control of light, or near performance. Each gives, if one sets aside presumptions and expectations, and gives, perhaps, in a more lasting way than would have been possible on site.

The Coptic Monastery of St. Paul by the Red Sea grew up around the cave where Paul, the first Christian hermit, lived in solitude. The cave served as a shrine in late antiquity, became a church in the middle ages, and expanded again in the early modern period.

This visually and intellectually exciting book chronicles the history of a series of devotional paintings in the Cave Church. It explores how the monastic community commissioned painting twice in the church in the 13th century, during one of the greatest eras of Coptic art, and how one of the monks painted it again in the 18th century, helping to inaugurate a Coptic renaissance after centuries of decline.

The foundation of this volume is a wall painting conservation project sponsored by the American Research Center in Egypt. The book also sets the art and architecture of the Cave Church in its historical context and examines the role of the Monastery of St. Paul as part of the sacred geography of Christian Egypt through time.

a handsome, unique book

So I saw this pricey book at a nice bookshop last year and fell in love with it. Decided to try for a lower price through Amazon. Easily done and received.

Without going into great detail I'll just say that it is quite gorgeous with large photos on virtually every leaf of this 393 page folio book. The photos are of course of the 18th century paintings in this fabulous Egyptian monastery (well represented on the cover). The paintings have a style much embedded in the medieval tradition with a wonderfully "crude" Coptic folk flavor. Plenty of visual comparisons with other Coptic works are offered to the reader as well. The book is comprehensively researched over a period of several years with a kind of intimate, enthusiastic, competent scholarship. It includes very involved indices that most readers, including me, won't spend much time in---but if one ever wants to chase down more of the same this will certainly guide the pilgrim where he wants to go. Published according to the high standards of Yale Univ. Press. If you purchase the book you won't be disappointed. Short of living in this splendidly ornate monastery occasional leisurely moments in this book is the next best thing.

a thorough tribute to a design giant

I just saw the last weekend of this show in New York at the Bard Center and it was inspired, to say the least. The book is the next best thing to being there if you are a Marimekko fan. It is a more thorough look at the company than the older title "marimekko phenomenon". The editor of this book, Marianne Aav (also the show's curator) was responsible for the 1998 show/book from the Bard Center on Finnish Modern Design. Marimekko's brave colors, shapes, and graphics are made more powerful, in my mind, by the fact that the final result appears so simple. While I mourn the lack of this in much of today's clothing/textile design, I think that the renewed excitement about Marimekko, and design in general, indicates that this is changing. There is a lot of exciting material coming out of Scandanavia and Finland by young designers right now, but Marimekko's influence on modern design cannot be underestimated. Their vision ranged beyond textiles into architecture as well, which the book illustrates. This exhibit & accompanying book have done a fine job at giving credit where it's due.

not enough photos

I stopped reading the because of a lack of photos. They go into detail about a particular pattern but then don't show it. Maybe when another book comes out this fall on Marimekko which I believe will have more photos of the patterns this book could work along side. I think that if you want the history this book would work but if you just love their fabric and clothes a person can find more on images on the web.

for people who loved the marimekko thrust in the last 40 years, this is a great retrospective and a treat for the eyes. very well done. wish i was able to see the exhibit. this is probably the next best thing.

great pictures

This book has great colored pictures and brief details about the cameos. My favorite picture was the cameo ring worn by Queen Elizabeth 1 ( King Henry and Anne Boelyn's daughter). This book would be wonderful for you if you want mostly beautiful pictures of vintage cameo jewelry and unmounted cameos. The pictures in this book can help you or your jeweler design replica vintage cameo jewelry as well.

This is more like a skimpy magazine than it is a paperback book. The cover and back is thin, wrinkled paper. The book arrived looking damaged and wrinkled. The photographs inside are beautiful and rare, but there is not much information on the pieces and there are better books out there for the money.
